Lion Quiz

Hi, here is a little lion quiz to test your knowledge about the lion. The lion is regarded as VU (vulnerable) under the IUCN Red List and I think it would help if we all know a bit more about the wildcats. Most of the wildcats are on the slippery slope to extinction in the wild, even though the IUCN Red List (for cats) gives the impression that the position a little less dire than that. If we all thought a bit more about the wildcats it may gradually encourage the world to do something about the predicament they face. Here is the lion quiz.

Here are the answers to the lion quiz in the order asked:
  1. 25%
  2. 35 mph - not that fast by some wildcat standards (cheetah 60-70 mph in bursts)
  3. False - lions hunt at night (dusk) - domestic cats do the same. Their special eyesight gives them an edge on the prey.
  4. 5 miles
  5. Theodore Roosevelt - he was a big game hunter and conservationist (I never understand how these two go together!). The lion was placed in a zoo and is now stuffed in the Smithsonian Institute.
  6. Typically 40 lbs and sometimes up to 75 lbs.
  7. True due to a short pregnancy.
  8. False. The answer is 18 months.
  9. Eyes that are well adapted to low light
  10. Mane that gets darker with age. Females like dark manes signifying higher testosterone levels, apparently.
