Infographic will change your mind about ancient Egyptians loving cats

Below the infographic I briefly touch on the ancient Egyptian paradox of both admiring and respecting the cat while abusing the animal. And other animals all in the name of worshipping the Gods and asking for favours. They were a very superstitious race. Many people still are. 😢😉

-------------------

The ancient Egyptians had a deep admiration for cats, considering them sacred animals. Cats were valued for their ability to protect homes and granaries by hunting mice, rats, and snakes, which helped safeguard food supplies. Over time, cats became associated with divine protection and were linked to the goddess Bastet, who was the goddess of home, fertility, and protection, often depicted as a lioness or a woman with a cat's head.

The reverence for cats was so strong that they were often mummified and buried with their owners, and killing a cat—even accidentally—was punishable by death. Cats also featured in Egyptian art and religious rituals, showing how highly they were regarded.

This admiration contributed to the spread of domestic cats throughout the world, as they became popular trade goods and companions for many cultures.

Paradoxically, while the Egyptians deeply revered cats, they also bred them specifically for sacrificial purposes. This practice emerged alongside the religious veneration of Bastet, the feline goddess of home, fertility, and protection. Worshippers would offer mummified cats as votive offerings at her temples, hoping to gain the favour of the goddess.

Archaeological evidence suggests that during certain periods, particularly from around 600 BCE onwards, there were large-scale breeding facilities dedicated to raising cats for this very purpose. Once these cats were killed (often humanely, though not always), they were mummified and offered in temples as a means of devotion. Millions of cat mummies have been found in Egypt, particularly in Bubastis, the center of Bastet worship, and other major temple sites.

While the act of breeding cats for sacrifice might seem contradictory to their revered status, it fits within the broader context of Egyptian religious practices, where offerings to gods—whether food, animals, or objects—were a fundamental way to show devotion. The cat's sacred status didn't prevent this practice, but rather made them more suitable for offerings to please Bastet and other deities. This juxtaposition illustrates the Egyptians' unique blend of spiritual reverence and ritual practices.

It was not just cats that were abused. Eight million jackals where offered to the Gods as mummies and buried in cemeteries in Egypt. It was mass slaughter.

JD Vance pours gasoline on the Haitian cat eating story and gets badly burned

Surprisingly, and in another poor decision by the Trump/Vance partnership, JD Vance has continued to pour gasoline on the discredited migrant cat eating story by posting on his Twitter/X feed (with 1.9 million followers) a video of poultry being cooked on an outdoor grill while claiming that domestic cats were being cooked in preparation for an outdoor meal in Ohio!

JD Vance. Image: Wikipedia.

The video accompanied the following words: "Kamala Harris and her media apparatchiks should be ashamed of themselves. Another debunked story that turned out to have merit."

You may remember that JD Vance had claimed falsely that Haitians in Springfield, Ohio were stealing domestic cats and eating them. There are many Haitian immigrants (I believe that they are legal immigrants) in Springfield, Ohio a town of 58,000 citizens. And I believe that the indigenous citizens have become annoyed by this 20,000 influx and have created this false scenario on social media which went viral.

Trump and Vance grabbed hold of it is a useful story to emphasise their desire to stop illegal immigration and that they are the duo best suited for this task. But they dug a big hole for themselves. And in this instance JD Vance has apparently got burnt by throwing gasoline on an already simmering fire.

The Independent newspaper tells us that this video was originally posted by the right-wing Manhattan Institute's Christopher Rufo, who apparently offered a $5,000 bounty to anyone that could provide proof of cat eating migrants in Ohio.

The newspaper is able to tell us that the footage was filmed last year in Dayton according to Rufo who has spoken to the person who made the video. The person who shot the video said that "some Africans that stay right next door to my kid's mother". And Rufo insists that the claims were verified i.e. that cats were being eaten, by "multiple witnesses and visual cross-references."

His article states that the video shows "a pair of flayed cats on a blue barbecue in Dayton Ohio".

Note: Haiti is not in Africa! It is in the Caribbean.

The reaction was rapid on social media. The general tenor of the criticisms is that chickens were being cooked and they were surprised that Rufo and JD Vance was unable to tell the difference between chickens and cats who reposted the video.

Here's an example: " “I find it strange that a self-professed ‘hillbilly’ doesn’t know what whole chickens look like."

And another example in capital letters to emphasise the point!: “HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW WHAT CHICKENS LOOK LIKE WITH THEIR LEGS ATTACHED YOU F****ING DIPSHIT.”

The Independent reached out to Rufo for a comment but he did not respond. Also, the JD Vance campaign declined to comment. And an expert at the National Chicken Council did not reply to requests to comment.

However, somebody close to JD Vance told the newspaper that they did not believe the carcasses to be grilled were chickens. The Independent newspaper journalist writes that "a visual comparison of skinned cats prepared for laboratory use and whole plucked chickens suggested the animals in the video are almost certainly not feline."

The story is both bizarre and sickening actually. We have to discuss, in this story, skinned cats being grilled in a backyard in Ohio. It makes me want to puke.

This is another escalation in this ridiculous story and it very strongly appears that JD Vance is digging a bigger hole for himself and the Tramp campaign. He's thrown gasoline on the embers of a fire that was fizzling out nicely and now it is back in flames in the headlines.

British zoologist jailed for grotesque and shocking abuse of dogs

NEWS AND OPINION: Sadly, this new story is all over the Internet probably because it is so "grotesque". It is one of the most sickening examples of animal abuse by an individual ever recorded in my view. The British zoologist who committed these crimes is Adam Britton, 53, a crocodile expert. He pleaded guilty to 63 charges in an Australian court including bestiality, animal cruelty and possessing child abuse material. He was jailed for 10 years and 5 months in Australia yesterday. He admitted to killing dozens of dogs.

British zoologist jailed for grotesque abuse of dogs
Image: MikeB based on an image deemed to be in the public domain.

He was a globally renowned crocodile expert. His reputation now, of course, is completely trashed. He had worked on BBC and National Geographic productions prior to being arrested in 2022. I can remember when that story first emerged.

The judge who sentenced Mr Britton to 10 years in jail described his behaviour as "unspeakable" and "grotesque".

Michael Grant, the Northern Territory Supreme Court Chief Justice warned that some details of the crimes that he had committed were too graphic to be published and he recommended that members of the public leave the court room.

Britain acquired 42 dogs online between 2020 and 2022. He promised their owners she would give them a good home as per an ABC report (Australia's national broadcaster).

Rather than giving them a good home as he promised, he filmed himself raping, torturing and killing them in a shipping container on this property in Darwin according to the ABC report. He shared the video footage on Telegram under a pseudonym.

People who attended the trial in the public gallery were seen crying and gasping as the offences were read out.

The judge said during sentencing: "You're sheer and unalloyed pleasure is sickeningly evident from the recorded material." Britton showed no emotion during sentencing.

Britain grew up in West Yorkshire. He obtained a PhD at the University of Bristol and then moved to Australia. He settled in the Northern Territory. He became a respected academic at Charles Darwin University.

He was considered to be an expert on saltwater crocodiles. He appeared on TV with celebrities including David Attenborough.

Outside the court, animal rights advocates gathered and labelled him a "zoo-sadist". They say that he deserves the death penalty. The death penalty has been outlawed in Australia since 1985.

He can apply for parole in April 2028. He is banned from owning mammals for the rest of his life.

Although the newspapers don't discuss this and I can only touch on it, he must have learnt this grotesque form of animal abuse somewhere from someone. I don't think humans inherit this kind of behaviour. And therefore, I would respectfully suggest that he learnt it from his parents perhaps his father. I think that point needs to be investigated actually. And we don't know whether he has children. If he has children has he passed on his miscreant behaviour to his kids? There is always a cycle of violence within a family. One generation passing it on to the next. It applies very starkly in the area of sport and trophy hunting. We see parents teaching their kids to hunt for pleasure. All animal advocates detest trophy hunting because it's so cruel and it is for the pleasure of the hunter.

Owners trick dogs with lemon slices in new animal exploitation trend on TikTok

A veterinarian, Dr. Anna Foreman, is yet another who has expressed concern about videos on TikTok in which animals are abused and exploited. TikTok has acquired a bit of a reputation for animal abuse videos; videos to attract viewers at any cost and the animal is there as a convenient subject to be used for this goal.

Owners trick dogs with lemon slices in new animal exploitation trend on TikTok
Owners trick dogs with lemon slices in new animal exploitation trend on TikTok. Screenshot.

On TikTok there is a hashtag  "#DogVSLemon" which has amassed 20.1 million views on the social media platform. That said, we should recognise the fact that TikTok statistics are heavily distorted by the way videos are looped to replay immediately after you've stop viewing it. I would estimate that all TikTok videos have received accurate views which are somewhere near a quarter of that which is stated adjacent to the video.

In one video which has apparently been viewed 16 million times, we see an uncomfortable puppy after its owner throws a lemon into its mouth. There has been a 65% increase in online searches for "dogs eating lemons".

It would seem that the amusing aspect of these videos is to see a dog's discomfort when they chomp down on a bitter lemon. Dr. Anna said that: “Many dogs will eat anything thrown at them (or grab any food on the floor etc.) without a second thought, often not even sniffing or tasting it first. “This can be good in a few scenarios, for example with giving a dog a tablet, however, it can be quite dangerous in many others.”

She added that “Sour citrus fruits such as lemon and lime tend not to be palatable to dogs, however if eaten in anything more than minimal quantities can cause gastrointestinal upsets or more severe clinical signs like collapse.

“Throwing food at a dog for them to catch is a choking hazard, particularly if the piece of food is too large to swallow whole.”

Owners who do this might at least slightly erode the relationship between themselves and their dog. They might undermine the trust that the dog has in them.

And it is also worth saying that this trick cannot be repeated with the same dog over and over again because they will learn that if they participate they'll be uncomfortable. It is a good example of negative reinforcement or punishment to alter behaviour. It is a clear-cut case of owners exploiting their companion dogs.

We have seen on numerous occasions owners exploiting companion cats in the same way. They are called "funny cat videos" but they aren't so funny for the cat because a study found that more than a third of cats in these videos are stressed.

Finally, a cat or dog might become stressed when performing the lemon throwing trick for a social media video. This may lead to aggression and that aggression might, on rare occasions, be directed at their owner or somebody else in the vicinity.

It is unwise behaviour and TikTok should stop it. They do promise to moderate videos but as usual for successful platforms like TikTok, the administrators have an impossible task.

There are too many uploaded videos and they are therefore reliant upon other users to notify them of animal abuse or other policy breaches. This doesn't happen enough and never will. It is a failure within social media.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania has passed a law banning the retail sale of commercially bred cats

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA, has passed a law (ordinance) which bans the retail sale of commercially bred dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores. People should understand that pet stores generally acquire animals from Commercial Reading Enterprises (CBEs). A more common term for these businesses is "puppy mills" or "kitten mills". A description which signifies that the animals are churned out with little regard for their health and for ethical breeding standards.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania has passed a law banning the retail sale of commercially bred cats

Nathan Winograd writes that, "CBEs engage in systematic neglect and abuse of animals, leaving severe emotional and physical scars on the victims. One in four breeding dogs have significant health problems, are more likely to suffer from aggression, and are psychologically and emotionally shut down, compulsively staring at nothing."

He paints a horror story and thankfully under the new law pet shops can partner with rescue organisations if they want to stock animals for sale/adoption.

The law that is mentioned is one which is becoming increasingly commonplace across America in an acceptance that it is unethical to allow pet shops to purchase dogs from abusive breeders when there are many unwanted companion animals at shelters nearby.

This law will help to encourage people to adopt and rescue animals rather than purchase them, to educate the community about dog and cat puppy mills and kitten mills and thirdly to stop the abuse of these animals.

I'm told that the number of CBEs has declined by 30% across America. In Nebraska, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture's records show that 50% of the state's commercial dog and cat breeders have left the business.

Bethlehem City Council unanimously passed the new ordinance last Tuesday. News media reports that there are no current pet sellers affected by the law but it will stop future businesses doing deals with puppy mills and kitten mills. And of course it sends a very strong message to the community.

The ordinance states: "A significant number of dogs and cats sold at pet stores come from large-scale, commercial breeding facilities where the health and welfare of the animals are not adequately provided for.”

A council member, Grace Smith, said: "I know our furry friends in Bethlehem and throughout the communities, as well as their families, are very grateful."

The penalty for a pet store from selling or offering to sell a cat, dog or rabbit will be a $500 dollar fine for every animal offered in violation of the new ordinance.

American animal rescuers step in to save 75 abused Dominican cats and dogs from closed shelter

NEWS AND COMMENT: The only animal rescue shelter on the Caribbean island of Dominica closed down. It contained 75 abused cats and dogs who've been rescued by an American rescue organisation. Great work guys.  It made the news bigtime. And rightly so. I find it both a sad and uplifting story. Sad that this 290 square mile island appears to have such a poor history of companion animal welfare and uplifting in that these animals have been rescued by Americans and flown to America for rehoming.

Smiling rescued dog from Dominica. Image:

I swear the dog in the picture above is smiling! And if he/she is they have a good reason. They are headed for a much better life.

Some more

Here is some added detail. The Dominican animal shelter that closed down was St Nicholas Animal Rescue. They were rescued by the Los Angeles-based charity Wings of Rescue in an emergency rescue mission.

I believe that organisation is the one that provided the aircraft to fly the 75 cats and dogs to Chicago organisation PAWS Chicago. The CEO of that organisation, Susanna Wickham, said: "We just had to step in when we heard what was happening. They need love. Even though these animals have been through really horrific abuse, they arrive here ready to trust and love and they are just wonderful creatures. They teach us so much and we are thankful to be able to help them."

Dominica

I think it's useful to briefly discuss the island of Dominica which as mentioned has an area of 290 mi². It is a Caribbean island officially called the Commonwealth of Dominica. It was initially settled by the Arawak from South America in the fifth century. It was later colonised by Europeans mainly the French from the 1690s to 1763. The French imported enslaved people from west Africa to work on coffee plantations. Great Britain took possession in 1763 and the English language took hold. The island gained independence as a republic in 1978. It is part of the Lesser Antilles Islands.

Animal rescue

Clearly, the island needs another animal rescue organisation to take charge. It appears that the animals on that island do not have an easy life. The current president of Dominica is Sylvanie Burton.

I want to put out a call to this woman to take urgent steps to re-establish an animal rescue organisation on the island and to take wider steps to improve animal welfare generally. It seems to be required.

Veterinarian gently chides a TikToker for facilitating animal abuse

Ben the Vet who, as you might know, has his own TikTok page likes, sometimes, to comment on the work of other TikTok users. And I think it is fair to say that some TikTok users use the platform to abuse their companion animals. This is not a direct ploy to abuse animals but in order to create an interesting TikTok video they end up either mildly or even perhaps sometimes greatly end up abusing their companion animal or allowing it to happen.

@ben.the.vet #duet with @honeycat vet reacts - not sure tiktok needs to see a cat vs. duck fight #catsoftiktok #duck #animalwelfare #fight ♬ original sound - honeycat

This is an example. The TikTok user being criticised videoed their cat batting their pet duck around the head. It looks unpleasant. It probably is for the duck who persists in trying to approach the cat.

As you can see, Ben suggests that it might be a good idea if the cat and dog were separated and that the TikTok user did not video the encounter in the first place. It is an example, once again, of pushing too hard to try and make a good TikTok video to get those precious high viewing figures. There has to be a limit.

TikTok, to the best of my knowledge, is known to be a social media platform which allows animal abuse to be presented on it. In this way, it actively promotes animal abuse, you could argue.

Civet cats cruelly abused for the civet cat poop coffee business in ghastly Indonesian farms

Civet cat poop farm
Civet cat poop farm. Screenshot from PETA video.

OPINION: I bumped into this picture (below) of the civet cat as it used to be called. As you can see this species of small mammal looks like a cat but it isn't. It is more closely related to mongooses. Many years ago, they were called civet cats when scientists classified animals by their appearance only. Nowadays we have DNA analysis which tells us this is not a member of the cat family.

Civet cat
Civet cat. Image in public domain.

It's a good picture because it shows you how in some ways they are similar to domestic cats but the muzzle is much longer. The civet that you see in the picture is a large spotted civet which is endangered in south-east Asia. They are eaten in China and may be extinct in China. Their main threat is deforestation to make way for palm oil plantations as they live in forests. Another example of human behaviour destroying habitats and the animals that live in those habitats.

For the civet it is worse than just destroying habitat. I didn't need to go far to bump into more abuse of wild animals. In this case the abuse of civets for the simple reason that their poop is used to make coffee; very expensive coffee. Can you believe that?

Civet poop coffee

This fashionable trend started some years ago and animal exploiters jumped on it. It is called the 'kopi luwak' industry in Indonesia. It is coffee made from civet cat poop. The reason that it can be made from faeces is because the civets eat coffee beans and therefore, they defecate some of the coffee beans in their poop. That is how it works as I understand it. Apparently, the coffee so produced tastes less bitter than conventional coffee.

PETA Asia investigated the Indonesian farms where civets are kept in abysmal conditions. They say that the sensitive Asian palm civet cats are constantly confined to cramped wire cages and fed a restrictive diet of coffee cherries.

As you might expect the animals become terribly stressed and anxious. They pace which is a displacement activity to try and cope with stress. They try and escape their filthy prisons. They have to eat this unnatural diet as it produces excrement they can be sold as "civet cat poop coffee" a.k.a. kopi luwak.

PETA says that some of the civets go insane. Indonesia is the world's top producer of this ridiculous form of coffee bean. You can buy this sort of coffee in cafés worldwide.

The tourists who drink it are aware of the animal cruelty behind it. They should be enlightened. That's why I am writing this to contribute towards that enlightenment.

The Asian palm civets are a protected species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). But they aren't, are they? That particular treaty is a complete failure as far as I am concerned. It is routinely ignored and unenforced.

PETA says that there is "pervasive cruelty on every single farm". These are nocturnal animals. They cannot express their natural behaviour obviously. They have no dark place to sleep and therefore do not get enough rest. When they were observed they panted "incessantly in the inescapable heat". Some had bloody wounds and appeared not to be receiving veterinary care. Some were losing their fur because of malnourishment.

Those in this ghastly business say that their civet cat poop is wild sourced but it isn't. More lies. Thankfully, because of PETA Asia's many investigations over 10 years some outlets have made the decision to pull kopi luwak from their shelves and to cut ties with this cruel industry.

Disappointingly, distributors in Japan, where there is one of the biggest civet cat poop markets, choose to continue to profit from this gross animal cruelty.

Further comment: I despair to be honest. There's no reason on God's earth why people need to drink coffee made from an animal's faeces! It just is ridiculous in the first place but to compound the ridiculousness of this form of human behaviour, humans have to be cruel to the animals that produce the poop. It's a double whammy of madness. When is the human going to grow up, stop being so stupid, stop being so self-indulgent, stop being so cruel to animals and start to be civilised?

Humans prefer to look at animal abuse videos than admire an old lady who walks miles to get cat food in a war

What is wrong with humanity? Was it always like this? It was. One thing I have learnt in running websites is that people are far more interested in looking at horrible and notorious animal abuse videos and reading animal abuse stories than for example admiring an old lady who travelled miles on foot in a war-torn country to buy a bag of cat food to feed her precious cat, perhaps her only friend left alive after Putin's illegal and brutal invasion on Ukraine.

This is the enduring lady I personally admire tremendously. She is suffering and caring for her cat under very tough conditions.

The woman deserves admiration and support. She is the kind of person all of us should admire. She's better than most of us. But no, the published picture of her (click this link to see her) has been seen once - just a single time - in 12 hours even after the page was 'advertised' on social media.

Yet, for 3 years one page on Luke Magnotta has garnered millions of hits. It still receives 30 hits every half hour. And it is a page that has a link to a notorious video of this psychopath killing kittens. That's what attracts people. The criminal and the bad. Not the admirable and the good.

I suspect most of the people who are obsessed with criminal abuse of animals are young. Gen X types is my guess.  The older people can't take that kind of crap anymore.

You need a fresh brain to look at that kind of crappy video. The only reason why it is on one of my sites is because it gets hits and that means advertising revenue which goes to charity a lot of the time.

So, what's wrong with humankind that makes us so interested in the bad stuff?  Why is the interesting news always bad news? Crime has always fascinated humans. Why? I have not seen a really convincing answer. For me the reason is in the next paragraph (the last sentence).

The experts say that it is because humans have a 'negativity bias'. We are interested in bad (negative) news as it warns us of a potential threat. That might be too nice to humans. The reasons might be simpler than that: we find the bad, gross stuff more titillating. It tweaks out tired, bored brains.

All I know is that I have to go in search of bad stuff to get hits. And science stuff isn't very popular either as it is too complicated. People want simple, in your face thrills, instantly without any effort.

The world is getting lazier and more bored. Family life is slowly breaking up. Marriage in developed counties is losing favour over simple partnerships.

In the UK the fabric of society is gradually fraying and society is destabilising. We are heading in the wrong direction. I am not saying that we can't change course and do things right. I am just saying I don't like the current attitudes which includes an obsession with negative news and grisly animal abuse by notorious criminals.

P.S. there is some hope! Animal rescue is always popular. But less so than the above-mentioned videos. Obviously, we are all different and not everyone likes animal abuse videos. There are many great people. Just too many bad 'uns.

Many people love animals particularly their pets. The trouble here is that not enough people know about the animal abuse which is a necessity of intensive farming. We really have to change our ways and change farming for good. Far too much animal abuse in it.

Click on the link above and take a lot at the way pigs are often treated on intensive farming farms. It'll make you wince and put you off eating 'pork' for ever.

Like me, Nike, finds the shooting of 2 million wild kangaroos every year for leather products unacceptable

NEWS AND OPINION - USA AND AUSTRALIA: Like me, Nike, find the killing of 2 million kangaroos every year objectionable and they are doing something about it. They've announced that at the end of 2023 they will no longer be using kangaroo leather in any of their products. Note: this is a cross-post as it is very important in animal welfare.

Perhaps the best-known product in which they use kangaroo leather (K-leather) is football boots. The uppers are often made of kangaroo leather because it is flexible, durable and more functional. As I understand it, many professional footballers have kangaroo leather football boots.

The problem is the source of the leather. We are looking at about the shooting of 2 million kangaroos by shooters employed by harvesters and professional marksmen sometimes at night for their meat and leather.

I have a deep sense of unease about this. I think a lot of the shooters don't just do it for the meat and leather i.e. the commercial interest, but because they enjoy shooting animals.

There must be a better and more humane way of stabilising the kangaroo population in Australia. The argument that the shooters and commercial enterprises spout is that if they don't shoot them like this in large numbers they will starve to death if there is a drought.

But they don't want, it seems to me, to comment on the morality and ethics of their enterprise and whether there is a more humane way of stabilising the population.

Nike is following in the footsteps of other top brands such as their German rival Puma and an Italian brand, Diadora. The luxury fashion houses including Gucci, Prada and Chanel have also stopped using kangaroo leather. As has the British label, Paul Smith.

Victoria Beckham has also spurned kangaroo leather and I'm told by The Sunday Times that her husband, David Beckham, stopped using kangaroo leather football boots (Adidas Predators) while he was the England captain.

In America, California has a statewide ban on kangaroo products. Oregon's legislature is debating a statewide ban. Nike has their headquarters in Oregon by the way.

Let's remember that when they harvest (a highly objectionable word in my opinion when it relates to sentient creatures) kangaroos it means shooting wild kangaroos. They are not farmed and driven to slaughterhouses to be killed as humanely as possible but they're simply shot by marksmen as mentioned. This must result in untold suffering.

It's impossible to envisage kangaroos being shot cleanly every time. Many hundreds of thousands of them must've been shot badly and died of their injuries slowly. This is clearly inhumane. It is clearly objectionable and it surprises me that it has continued for so long.

Apparently, Nike's change of mind has been brought about by a very long campaign by the Centre for a Humane Economy which was supported by celebrities such as Ricky Gervais's and Woody Harelson (see video above).

For me, this is great news. There may be a federal ban in the US one day because there is an attempt to push through the Kangaroo Protection Act which if passed would create a nationwide ban in America for kangaroo products.

New Zealand's state sanctioned animal AND CHILD abuse by indoctrinating kids to kill non-native species

New Zealand's Ministry of Education encourages children to kill non-native mammals including cats which they label 'pests' (yeh, not 'pets'). It is state sanctioned animal abuse and the abusers are indoctrinated kids. Horrible.

In an astonishing conclusion to his lengthy analysis, Michael C Morris of the Royal Agricultural University, concludes that "even the Ministry of Education resources, encourage children to kill non-native mammals, show them how to set traps, and emphasised to teachers how they need to impress on children the importance of eradicating pests."

New Zealand's state sanctioned animal AND CHILD abuse by indoctrinating kids to kill non-native species
New Zealand's state sanctioned animal AND CHILD abuse by indoctrinating kids to kill non-native species. Image: MikeB

Other organisations in New Zealand including four government agencies, three conservation NGOs and one education NGO, promote the killing of non-native species by children.

"Non-native" means a species of animal which has not evolved in the country concerned. The domestic, stray and feral cat in New Zealand is a non-native species. It is therefore an alien species and regarded as a pest by New Zealand's authorities despite the fact that there are many cat loving care givers with cat companions in that beautiful country.

Shame, therefore, that despite being visually beautiful, the mentality of the Ministry of Education is far from beautiful and indeed quite ugly.

All the organisations promote trapping and poisoning to eliminate feral cats and other non-native species. The objective? To preserve biodiversity. To conserve native species because feral cats are very good hunters.

Shockingly, no consideration whatsoever, according to Mr Morris, is given to alternatives "such as changing human activities, non-lethal contraceptive or gene drive techniques, more localised and targeted pest control or translocation techniques such as Operation Nest Egg."

Mr Morris has not mentioned a very well-established alternative with respect to feral cats namely TNR which is widely practised in America where they, too, have a feral cat problem.

TNR is simply not on the radar in New Zealand. Well, it might be in the minds of some decent citizens of New Zealand who want to help feral cats but it is not in the minds of the country's administrators.

New Zealand introduces words such as "war" and "invasion" to describe the "pests" that are the feral cats in their country. For me, it is the feral cats who are the victims as much as the native species upon which they prey.

The feral cats of New Zealand were introduced to the country as is the case in Australia by immigrants to the country bringing domestic cats with them and allowing those cats to return to the wild and procreate.

The back story, the root of the problem, is not the feral cat which is the 'messenger' of the bad behaviour of humans.

It appears that New Zealand is unique in mandating and encouraging children to kill non-native species which are perfectly good and decent animals. It is entirely inappropriate to single out non-native species as a target for eradication. It's a happenstance due to human carelessness that they are non-native and feral.

For the state to encourage children to kill animals is a form, in my opinion, of state sanctioned child abuse.

It is indoctrinating them to believe that the cute possum or the cute feral kitten is an enemy of New Zealand. These children probably love the sight of cute possums. That is their natural instinct. And then, the Ministry of Education reprograms their brains to think that they are pests to be killed. It is simply unacceptable.

There are studies which have found a causal relationship between children who've witnessed animal abuse to then being more likely to be animal abusers themselves.

If the children are animal abusers (which is what this program makes them), they are certainly more likely to become animal abusers and even human abusers when they are adults.

Infographic on speciesism and how it can lead to animal abuse

Here is an article built around an infographic on speciesism and how it can lead to animal abuse. It is greatly unfair to indulge in speciesism. I firmly that we should treat all animals equally and on a par with humans. A lofty and perhaps unattainable goal.

Here are some quick thoughts on speciesism and how it can lead to animal abuse. They are instant thoughts, no more. A stream of consciousness. Please add yours in a comment. It is common sense that if a person regards one species of animal as of lower value than another it is likely that they will treat that animal less well. And if, in addition, they believe that animals are lesser creatures to humans it increases the chances of animal maltreatment. This is speciesism in action.

Cat and dog meat

When I think of speciesism I sometimes think of cat and dog meat. It is a pet topic of mine. Perhaps I shouldn't think of it. But the cause or the underlying reason for cat and dog meat is speciesism. The celebrated contemporary artist Ai Weiwei, a Chinese citizen now living in Portugal, says that the Chinese' relationship with animals is one of functionality. Animals need to be functional and serve the human.

Bible

It is based upon an old-fashioned idea I would suggest in the modern era that humans have dominion over animals, and they are there to serve us. The concept of "dominion" comes from the Bible. The Bible did untold harm in my opinion. Christianity has a very bad relationship with animal abuse. Think of the persecution of domestic and stray cats during the Middle Ages under the orders of a papal bull.

So, in the modern era cat and dog meat is a form of speciesism. A very brutal and horrific form. It isn't the actual eating of cats and dogs that is perhaps the worrying aspect of this tradition going back perhaps thousands of years. It is the fact that they have to be killed brutally in order for the meat to taste good and be medicinal. That's the superstition and cat and dog meat which is based upon superstition. Cat meat is eaten in many other countries including USA.

Superstition

Superstition is part of speciesism. They are in the same rotten group of human thoughts and behaviours. And as I say in the Infographic, there are millions of examples of speciesism.

Australia

The domestic cat is loved by the majority of people but there is a significant number who hate the domestic cat and more so the stray and feral cat. In Australia they hate feral cats because it preys upon their wildlife. It is an invasive species. It is vermin in Australia. They need to be killed as fast as possible. This is speciesism. The human is superior to cats, and dogs are also superior to cats.

The feral cat is at the bottom in terms of a hierarchy of animal species. Small, native mammal species in Australia preyed upon sometimes by the feral cat are considered to be far more important and valued more highly than cats in general in Australia in my view.

This too is an example of speciesism, and it results in an enormous amount of abuse and cruelty of cats on that continent.

China

In China dogs were beaten to death before the Olympic Games in Beijing. They, too, were considered to be pests. During Covid, I recall in one instance a group of men in white hazmat suits walking into a flat and beat a pet beloved dog to death in order to try and control the spread of Covid. This was 'just a dog' not a human and therefore it could be beaten to death without any conscience. It was ghastly and another horrific instance of speciesism in China.

I don't want to harp on about China, but you will see a lot of this animal abuse based upon speciesism in that large Asian country.

Tiger

Sometimes important animals can be reduced to lowly animals in the eyes of humans. Take for example the tiger. An iconic species. An endangered species. One that needs protection on this planet. Many people in India try and protect the Bengal tiger.

Unfortunately, it is poached for its body parts by traders who take the body back to China where those body parts are converted into medicinal products such as tiger bone wine for the Traditional Chinese Medicine market which is enormous. TCM as it is called is perhaps the biggest threat to the extinction of the Bengal tiger on this planet. Even more so than habitat loss. This is a dire example of speciesism.

An iconic species has been reduced to livestock to be cut up and eaten for superstitious reasons. And livestock are abused all over the world because they are just that "livestock". They are there to serve people. To provide food to people. They are not sentient to farmers although they are sentient creatures.

They feel pain and anguish, highs and lows but to farmers there are just livestock and to be killed and eaten. Another example of speciesism leading to animal abuse.

Abattoirs

It is Paul McCartney, of the Beatles who said that if abattoirs had glass walls nobody would eat meat anymore. A clear statement that what goes on in an abattoir is horrific and people should see it. It might change some people from being speciesist to non-speciesist. It might change people from meat eaters to vegans and vegetarians. This is McCartney's objective.

Cats and dogs

Speciesism can occur in more minor ways. Take dogs and cats. Some people are dog people others are cat people are. The truth is that people should be animal people and like dogs and cats equally and if you don't like dogs but like cats you should at least respect dogs and treat them nicely as you would a cat in terms of fundamental welfare.

But some dog people hate cats, and they see cats as sinister and aloof. She them as aggressive and difficult and uncommunicative. They don't see them as loving companion animals which they are. And you will see many instances of stray cat abuse by people who dislike cats. A further example of speciesism. These people put dogs on a pedestal, but they put cats in the gutter.

Singer versus PETA

Singer's definition is only about humans being superior to animals but in my view, it is far better to define speciesism in a way that PETA has namely that it is differentiating between animal species and giving some animals greater value than others as well as giving humans greater value than all animals. This is a wider definition and I think far more useful because a lot of animal abuse comes about through treating some animals as sentient and others as non-sentient.

Fish

What about fish? A lot of people regard fish as nuts and bolts. Didn't see them are sentient creatures. These huge trawlers fish the oceans for millions of fish. When they are caught and dumped onto the deck of their boats they suffocate because they can no longer taking oxygen from water. So, they die of suffocation and in pain. Can fish feel pain? Yes, is the answer to that question.

Once you regard fish as inanimate objects and non-sentient you are engaging in the act of speciesism resulting in the abuse of this devalued animal which is purely regarded as a source of food and non-sentient.

Bees

What about bees and wasps? Bees have been found to be quite intelligent. They enjoy playing with balls and pushing them around the place. People will often simply swot bees and wasps to death when they come into their home because they are 'just insects'. But insects are animals and to simply swot a bee because you feel it is dangerous is yet another example of speciesism.

Man in Wales goes out of his way to kick an old cat

Caught on CCTV, we see a man in Wales, who seems to be fairly elderly, kicking an elderly cat against a wall. The man went out of his way to do it. The cat's owner is bemused at this alleged wanton act of cat cruelty.

She branded the man 'disgusting'. Her cat is 17 years of age. Fortunately, the video shows us that the kick was not particularly violent although the cat was projected against a garden wall.

The video footage was recorded in Newport, Wales. It shows two older men walking down the road before the skinnier one spots the cat sitting on the pavement (sidewalk) outside a house and not far from a brick wall.

After he spots the cat, he clearly decides to alter his route to kick her. The cat's owner, Valerie Young, of Albert Terrace in Newport spotted the alleged crime because she appears to have her security camera attached wirelessly to her tablet computer.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT DIFFICULT TO LOOK AT. IT IS CRUEL AND BAD HUMAN BEHAVIOR BUT RELATIVELY MILD COMPARED TO WHAT WE ARE USED TO SEEING AND READING ABOUT.

She said: "The cat is old now. She's 17 so she doesn't go far. She only goes in the dingle [a shady dell] next door, and she was laying in the sun. I saw the two men on the camera, but I didn't take much notice. Then I saw what he had done. He kicked the cat against the wall, literally kicked it against the wall."

Valerie says that she is now carrying her cat around because her left paw was hurt in the incident. She will be taking her to a veterinarian to assess the injury.

Apparently, she confronted the men and shouted that she knew what the perpetrator had done.

She said: "'It's just dreadful, I don't understand it. I've just been crying all day. I can't see how people could be so cruel to a little cat. I think it's absolutely disgusting. She was just lying in the sun, that's all she was doing."

It appears that she reported the incident to the police. It is not the first time that her cat has been deliberately injured. Years ago, somebody damaged her cat's eye (it was lost as a result) and cut all her whiskers and all her claws.

Gwent Police have passed on the information to the RSPCA to investigate what is an alleged act of animal cruelty.

The police confirmed that they had "received a report from the Newport area at around 4:30 PM, Wednesday 19 October, that a cat was kicked. Anyone with information, including CCTV or dash cam footage, can call us direct quoting log reference 2200354630."

Cat Hell Dog Nightmare Human Norm

WARNING: this is about dog and cat meat and the brutality of the business. It's just horrendous. The pictures are from a horror movie only it's real this time. And for the perpetrators it is all normal but got the cats and dogs it is a living hell until they are mercifully killed. You have to click links to see the pics as they are too horrible to have on this page.

The brutal and ignorant behavior by the humans (sub-humans) who kill cats and dogs for meat reminds me of Putin's behavior in his manic desire to invade Ukraine and the subsequent death, destruction and rape perpetrated by his troops. There is not much difference in attitude which is why Russia is matey with China and vice versa.

It is tough to face up to humankind's weaknesses. People in one country don't like people in another country criticising them. They say "you don't understand our culture" and "what right have you got to criticise". That sort of thing. At its root, this article is not about a country's culture. It is about obvious animal cruelty of the most heinous kind. It is about base human behavior dressed up as part of an area's culture. All of us have a right to criticise that wherever we are. Despite that I will be ostracized by someone, somewhere.

This website never shirks from spelling out the truth. A lot of people don't like that. Humankind is very good at self-denial and finding ways of covering up the truth. Millions of examples take place every day. The current classics in the cat world are:
  1. The mass slaughter of unwanted cats at "shelters" while we have fancy cat shows showing gorgeous, purebred cats bred for the purpose. You cannot justify having the latter while the former takes place.
  2. Declawing of cats. A modern aberration and horribly distorted human behavior that one day will look ridiculous - hopefully.
To the above two I'd like to add something that is worse than both but which takes place at the opposite side of the world, in Asia. There are some horror pictures below the text. This is as bad as animal cruelty gets. See also cat meat name and shame.

Warning: Don't read on if, like me, you become upset at gross animal abuse. But please spread the word to try and stop this.

I received an email from Ольга Брундасова. I have published the contents verbatim. I believe that is what she wants me to do. I expect that you will find these words on other websites. They need to be.

PETITIONS

Update: these petitions are closed now as this post was written many years ago but it has been updated (see below in yellow highlighter).
The $2 billion dollar-a-year South Korean dog and cat meat industry, which extinguishes the lives of approximately two and a half million dogs a year for meat or gaesoju, a dog wine or broth, and thousands of despised and doomed cats for so-called “health” tonics or goyangyeesoju, and soup, operates in a sordid and illicit world where farmers and butchers kill with frightening impunity in the most abominable fashion. Dogs are killed with high-voltage electronic rods (which does not kill immediately), hanging, or even beating the dog to death at the request of customers who believe that the meat is more tender and tastier the greater the dog suffers (one of the most pernicious of myths) and that the medicinal properties are enhanced.

They are most often killed within sight of their cage mates. They are then thrown into a tub of boiling water, often still alive, and then into a rotating drum for the removal of their fur, and finally blowtorched. At Moran Market, South Korea’s largest open air-market for dog meat, dog carcasses are on display next to the cages of live dogs. Cats are thrown into boiling water while alive. At the farms, dogs are fed germ-infested, rotting, and fermented human leftovers, a health risk to both the dogs and those who eat them. In South Korea, dogs and cats’ lives are short and ferociously heartless until they tremble no more at the hands of their slaughterers as cage mates look on.

Legitimacy of dog meat in Korea

Dogs are defined as “livestock” according to the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAF). The purpose of keeping them as livestock--for breeding, killing, or whatever--is irrelevant to the law.

However, dogs are not defined as “livestock” under the Livestock Processing Law. That is, they are not listed as livestock that can be officially processed as food. Therefore, it can be inferred it is illegal to process dogs for food, but there is no law expressly forbidding it.

It might be argued that since Korean laws are usually strict in listing what is allowed or prohibited, and since dogs are not listed as animals that can be processed as food, then it is illegal to produce dog meat.

The current Animal Protection Law does not ban the slaughter of dogs for meat, nor does it protect dogs on dog farms from abuse. It only applies to dogs kept in a house.

Tens of millions of animals are slaughtered and butchered in China each year. Animal fur is in high demand, and the Chinese deliver. What does not get exported outside of China usually ends up on a dinner plate. The sad fact is that the animals suffer horrendous torture. They are captured on the streets, and packed by the dozens into small cages, without ability to move.

They are then tossed like inanimate objects from the trucks, onto the ground, hitting each other and the steel cages. These cages are later stacked, and the real nightmare begins. The animal is brutally pulled out of the cage, and tied to prevent resistance. It is lightly stunned by a blow on the head, but still alive. If the animal is not heavy, the worker holds it by its hind legs, waves it in the air and then bashes its head against the ground. Once the animal is subdued, a new and incomprehensible stage in this ongoing nightmare begins.

The worker cuts a tiny incision in the animal's rear, and then methodically peels away the skin. This skinning process takes about a minute, during which the worker actively keeps the animal alive, as it is believed that it is easier to skin the animal while it is still warm and blood flows through its veins. The nightmare does not end here.

The final stage in this unbelievable horror is when the animal is tossed aside, and slowly, amidst a heap of its dying friends, it perishes as it is no longer able to withstand the pain. In other cases, when the animal's fur is not needed (mostly with cats), the animals are put in a sack, and are then cooked alive in a barrel of boiling water.

Back in the day, there was a series of photographs below this text. But the policies regarding the kind of pictures you can put on websites has changed over the years. Nowadays, advertisers don't want their adverts to be in any way associated with pictures which are difficult to view. Accordingly, below, you will see a series of links to these photographs. You remain on this page and will be able to view the pictures on another page where there are no adverts. Sorry for the inconvenience.

These are all brutal photos. Horrible. A complete breakdown in morality. It's ignorance and cruelty.

Animal rights quotes and some thoughts

I think we should make up our own animal rights quotes. Here is one I just made up: "Animal cruelty leads to human cruelty. Hurting animals hurts humankind in the long run" - Michael Broad (webmaster PoC).

Animal advocate
Animal advocate. Image: Pixabay.

OK, it's not that good but it makes the point. Here are some "professional" animal rights quotes:

The first one is a very well-known quote. It has been quoted hundreds of thousands of times and rightly so. To emphasise what I have stated below, I don't think that the human race can be described as civilised until we all respect animals. We have a long way to go. That is abundantly clear.

Animal rights
Animal rights. Image: Pixabay.

The invasion of Ukraine by Putin's forces has resulted in horrifically uncivilised human behaviour towards both people and animals by the Russians. In contrast, the Ukrainian defenders appear to be very gentle and respectful of stray dogs and cats.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Mahatma Gandhi

It is so right because the treatment of living creatures who are vulnerable or at the mercy of people in authority and/or power indicates the quality of the society and the calibre of the people who in power. For animals all people are in power all people have dominion over them. The bible as I recall endorses that view which is wrong. The bible is wrong in many respects. Please read The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine.

So, it is an animal quote that actually applies to all living creatures including people who are vulnerable. These are usually the poorer people, people more likely to be abused and used by the stronger, alpha male types.

Photo: Facebook @thebodegacats.

A society that cares properly for the most vulnerable - and companion animals are vulnerable in a human dominated world - is one that has become truly civilised. The world is not civilised, not even western nations are civilised. Over 2 million feral cats are needlessly and deliberately killed in the USA every year. They don't pass the Gandhi test I am afraid.

I was reminded, incidentally, that Gandhi was no saint himself. He was human but he knew how to make a good quote! And he knew animal and human rights.

"Life is life's greatest gift. Guard the life of another creature as you would your own because it is your own. On life's scale of values, the smallest is no less precious to the creature who owns it than the largest..."
- Lloyd Biggle Jr.

I have not heard this animal rights quote before. Actually, it is not necessarily an animal rights quote, more commonsense.

The thing is this: if we kill and abuse animals, we are hurting nature and nature is the world. We are killing a part of us indirectly. We are hurting ourselves slowly and indirectly. If we do something bad to an animal, we are damaging ourselves psychologically I believe. If we do the opposite and do good, we build our self-esteem. We create a better world inside our heads and outside in our small way.

"True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it." - Milan Kundera, (Czech Novelist)

"Most people have forgotten how to live with living creatures, with living systems and that, in turn, is the reason why man, whenever he comes into contact with nature, threatens to kill the natural system in which and from which he lives." - Konrad Lorenz, (Naturalist)

In general, the world has forgotten how to live with nature. We have forgotten that we don't own the planet but are guardians of it. We live on it and yet we destroy it. Abusing animal rights is a small manifestation of our inability to think sustainably and how to live harmoniously with nature. By nature, I mean all living creatures and the landscape on which we live.

Sometimes I believe that we hate ourselves so much that we are destroying the planet as a way of destroying ourselves.

One area where animal rights are routinely abused wholly legally is in the area of animal testing. This is a controversial area. But if we have any sensitivity to animal rights, animal testing is repugnant. It is distasteful and obviously wrong. Why are we more important than animals? In terms of world health, we are less important than all other animals because we are the greatest threat to the world. As I said we are destroying it. Animals don't destroy the world. They live in harmony with nature and the planet.

"Atrocities are no less atrocities when they occur in laboratories and are called 'medical research." - George Bernard Shaw, (Irish Playright and Critic)

It would seem that some progress has been made in the area of animal rights....

Eleanor Roosevelt with family dog
"It seems to me of great importance to teach children respect for life. Towards this end, experiments on living animals in classrooms should be stopped. To encourage cruelty in the name of science can only destroy the finer emotions of affection and sympathy, and breed an unfeeling callousness in the young towards suffering in all living creatures." - Eleanor Roosevelt, (former First Lady of the United States of America)

Eleanor Roosevelt lived October 11, 1884 – November 7, 1962. Am I correct is presuming that in the United States, conducting live animal experiments has been banned in the classroom? God, I hope so. It is disgusting.

It is particularly important that children learn to respect other living creatures, to respect nature and other people. Martha Kane working in Malta as a cat rescuer gives talks to school children for this particular purpose.

I hope you enjoyed these animal rights quotes. Please add your own animal rights quote by leaving a comment.

Postscript: I might be an extreme animal advocate but I believe that the human-animal is not superior to any animal. I believe that we are all equal whether we are humans or animals. Obviously, we are not because in the human world very few people think that but I also believe that it would be a better world if people thought like me. There would be much less animal cruelty. Little animal exploitation. A much lower human population and so on. Human population growth is almost a disease on the planet. It is destroying the planet. And if you destroy animals, you also destroy humans and the planet. We need to live in harmony. There needs to be far more respect for animals both wild and domestic. We have a legacy of Christianity in large parts of the world which more or less states that humans have dominion over animals. Not a good concept.

Cats shot with darts - Kentucky, the worst state for animal protection

NEWS AND COMMENT - Jessamine County, Kentucky, USA: The video explains this sad story. It seems that some maniac has devised a new way to kill cats. Great, well-done. There's a guy on YouTube who commented on the video below. He said the cat killing was justified if the cat scratched a car! A mean: pathetic or what?

RELATED: Best and worst US states for animals.

He's suggesting that it is okay to commit a crime and animal cruelty if a cat scratches a car. This is bad thinking. And in any case, it is not the cat's fault as cats behave naturally and instinctively. If a cat scratches a car and the car owner wants to blame someone, they must blame the cat's owner for letting their cat roam freely in an area where there are maniacs; not the cat. Obvious really.

The police officer in the video says that the animal welfare laws of Kentucky are too soft. He believes that killing a cat with a dart should be a felony. It is nice to hear that from a police officer.

He also said that the dart was made from a golf tee peg. Looking at the video, I am not sure that he is correct unless this is a novel new kind of golf tee peg.  I stopped playing golf years ago so I may be wrong myself.

According to the annual U.S. Animal Protection Laws Rankings Report published by the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the nation’s preeminent legal advocacy organization for animals, Kentucky ranks the worst state of all for animal protection laws. This indicates that the legislature of Kentucky has the least concern for animal welfare of all 50 state legislatures. Not a great endorsement of their competence.

You know what they say (the wise among us): the quality of a human society is reflected in their animal welfare laws. The poorer the laws the poorer the society. This is because in the best societies the vulnerable are protected the most effectively. A sign of a sophisticated society.

In domestic violence households, gifted animals are abused 94% of the time

In research carried out by Dr. Mary Wakeham, formerly of Bristol University, on the link between domestic violence and animal abuse, they found that in 94% of domestic violence households were an animal was given as a gift the animals were then abused and in some cases killed by the perpetrator of the domestic violence. I find the percentage astonishing but I don't find the link surprising. We know that pets are used as tools by the perpetrators of domestic violence to control and coerce their victims.

This research is another added piece of information which confirms sadly what we already know and understand: the link between animal abuse and domestic violence. Companion animals are ideally placed for the perpetrators of domestic violence to psychologically attack their victims. They are innocent and vulnerable and emotionally connected to the victims of domestic violence.

The research was carried out by Dogs Trust and Cats Protection (believed). It also found that 97% of people working in the domestic abuse sector said that companion animals were often used as a way to control victims of domestic violence.

The researchers also concluded that in households where there is domestic violence (domestic abuse) 88% of the time animals were also abused by the perpetrator. And in more than 10% of these homes, animals were killed by perpetrators to emotionally harm their victims and to punish and frighten them. I suspect that these pet killings are often unreported and undealt with by the police because of further coercion.

The information is published ahead of a campaign to tackle domestic violence called 16 Days of Action against Domestic Violence. It started on November 25. It is therefore still running at the time of this post.

Freedom Project Manager at Dogs Trust, Amy Hyde, said that their organisation has heard of the perpetrators of domestic abuse not allowing victims to walk their dogs alone. They stop them from accessing veterinary care for the dogs or being able to spend money on dog food. These are not direct acts violence against the animals concerned but another way of using pets to control and coerce their victims who are dog lovers. If you love a dog and have a strong bond with a dog, the nasty people who perpetrate domestic violence user that information to their advantage. Cats are also involved of course.

It's a shocking indictment of the dysfunctionality of humankind in some settings and in some places by some people.

The study

The research study is titled Animal Abuse As a Strategy of Coercive Control. It was conducted by Dr. Mary Wakeham a former PhD Student at the University of Bristol. I could not find the study online. Perhaps it is yet to be published. It concerned a national survey of 107 respondents who were all victim-survivors of domestic abuse in the UK. They all lived with companion animals. In-depth interviews were conducted with 24 of them together with 10 professionals. Animal abuse occurred in 94 of the 107 i.e. 88% of the households. All 24 interviewed participants talked about how the perpetrator abused their companion animal.

The Dogs Trust website say that in 13 of the 107 homes the animals were killed. This is 12% of the cases.
