Putin behaved like an SS Nazi when he deported 20,000 Ukrainian kids to Russia for indoctrination

Putin lies so much (like Trump!) that he can call 'black' white and believe it. And he has a habit of describing Ukrainians who want to be part of Europe 'Nazis' when he has behaved just like the SS Nazis who 'stole' and deported tens of thousands of Polish children from Poland to Germany in 1940 and selected the blond-haired, blue-eyed ones to turn them into Germans through extensive indoctrination.

Putin learned to commit this huge crime from Hitler for which he has been charged by the International Criminal Court for this mass, war crime. In March 2023, the ICC issued arrest warrants for both Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's Commissioner for Children's Rights. These charges are based on substantial evidence that Russian authorities orchestrated the deportation of Ukrainian children from occupied areas to Russia, where many have reportedly been placed in Russian families, given Russian citizenship, and subjected to forced assimilation into Russian culture.

The ICC’s charges are rooted in the Rome Statute, which defines the forcible transfer of children from one national group to another as a war crime and, in certain cases, as an act of genocide. By focusing on these forced transfers, the ICC underscores the severity of the situation and the long-term harm such policies inflict on the children, their families, and Ukraine as a whole. This marked the first time the ICC has issued a warrant for a sitting leader of a major world power, highlighting the international community’s condemnation of these actions as serious violations of human rights and international law.

However, as Russia is not a party to the ICC, enforcing the warrant is challenging. Although the ICC does not have direct jurisdiction in Russia, any travel by Putin to countries that recognize the ICC could potentially lead to his arrest. This unprecedented move has intensified global discussions on accountability for war crimes and the protection of children in conflict zones.

Question: In 1940 after Germany invaded Poland, they deported 20,000 Polish children and selected the blond-haired, blue-eyed ones to turn them into Germans. Correct?

Answer from AI: Yes, that’s largely correct. After Germany invaded Poland in 1939, the Nazis implemented a policy known as Lebensborn, which aimed to "Germanize" children deemed to have "Aryan" features—primarily blond hair and blue eyes. This initiative was part of a broader racial policy to create what the Nazis saw as a "pure" Germanic race. Children who met these physical criteria were often forcibly taken from their families and sent to Germany to be raised as Germans, with their Polish identities erased.

As part of the Lebensraum (living space) policy, which sought to expand German territory, the Nazis displaced hundreds of thousands of Polish civilians, often separating families. While exact numbers vary, it is estimated that up to 200,000 Polish children were taken during the occupation, and many were never reunited with their biological families after the war. Those who didn't meet the physical criteria, or who resisted, often faced harsh treatment, including internment in concentration camps.

This abduction and forced Germanization of Polish children remains one of the tragic examples of Nazi racial ideology in action.

How many Ukrainian children has Putin taken from Ukraine in the current war after Russia's invasion, and forced them to live in Russia to become Russians through indoctrination?

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Ukrainian officials estimate that approximately 20,000 to 27,000 children have been taken from Ukraine into Russia or Russian-occupied areas. Many of these children were reportedly subjected to Russian "filtration" processes, which involved screening them and often placing them in Russian-controlled territories or with Russian adoptive families, sometimes under false claims that they were orphans. For example, in occupied areas like Mariupol and Kherson, Russian authorities searched orphanages, removed children, and relocated them to regions within Russia.

The forced transfers have been widely condemned, and Russia’s policies regarding Ukrainian children appear to include issuing Russian citizenship to these children and enrolling them in schools or foster care within Russia. Many reports indicate that they are pressured to adopt Russian culture and language, effectively erasing their Ukrainian identities through systematic indoctrination, similar to the Nazi Lebensborn program. Russian authorities have defended the relocations as "evacuations" or “humanitarian measures,” but international bodies, including the UN, view them as human rights violations and potential war crimes due to the forced assimilation and denial of the children's Ukrainian heritage.

Efforts to return these children are underway, with Ukrainian organizations, international coalitions, and human rights advocates calling for their safe return and for accountability for those involved in their forced displacement.

Do you see the very close similarities between these two crimes?

Yes, the parallels between Nazi Germany’s abduction of Polish children and Russia’s forced transfer of Ukrainian children are striking. Both cases involve the large-scale removal of children from their families and their forced assimilation into the occupying power's culture, with the intent of erasing their original identities and replacing them with those of the dominant ideology.

Key Similarities

  1. Ideological Justification and Forced Assimilation: Both Nazi Germany and Russia justified these removals under the guise of "saving" or "helping" children from areas of conflict. Nazi policy targeted Polish children with “Aryan” features for assimilation into German society, viewing them as racially valuable. Similarly, Russia claims it is evacuating Ukrainian children for their safety, but it systematically places them with Russian families, grants them Russian citizenship, and instills Russian culture, language, and identity—often explicitly prohibiting Ukrainian heritage.

  2. Legal and Bureaucratic Systems for Identity Erasure: Both regimes developed legal frameworks to alter the children’s identities. Under the Nazis, children’s names were changed, and they were often unaware of their true origins. In Russia, streamlined adoption and citizenship processes allow Russian families to change the names, birth dates, and even places of origin of Ukrainian children, who are then raised to view themselves as Russian.

  3. Objective of Cultural and National Erasure: In both scenarios, the intent appears to be not just the physical displacement of children but a strategic attempt to dilute or erase the cultural identity of the children’s nation. For Nazi Germany, this was part of a broader goal to create a racially "pure" Germanic Europe. In Russia’s case, the absorption of Ukrainian children serves to weaken Ukrainian cultural continuity and legitimize Russia's occupation by "Russifying" future generations.

  4. Violation of International Law: Both policies are in violation of international laws designed to protect children, particularly during conflicts. The UN and human rights organizations have condemned both actions as forms of genocide. Under international law, the forced transfer of children with the intent to assimilate them into another national group is recognized as a war crime and an act of genocide.

These similarities underscore a disturbing pattern: the use of children as instruments in a broader strategy of occupation and cultural erasure. Both Nazi Germany and modern Russia used this tactic to destabilize and absorb territories by attempting to eliminate the cultural foundations of their occupied populations. The long-term psychological and cultural impacts on the children and their communities are profound, leading to deep-seated trauma and loss of cultural identity that lasts well beyond the conflict itself.

And it is interesting that Putin calls Ukrainians 'Nazis' when he is behaving like an SS Nazi in deporting the Ukrainian children.

Yes, it’s deeply ironic and contradictory that President Putin justifies his invasion of Ukraine by branding Ukrainians as “Nazis,” while some of his policies resemble Nazi-era strategies, particularly in the forced deportation and "re-education" of Ukrainian children. His accusations tap into powerful historical narratives, but the documented actions involving Ukrainian children reflect tactics historically associated with Nazi occupation policies.

Propaganda and the “De-Nazification” Claim

Putin has frequently framed his invasion as a “de-Nazification” mission, a claim that many historians and international experts view as baseless. While there are far-right elements in many countries, including Ukraine, this framing ignores the fact that Ukraine is a democratic nation with a Jewish president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose family suffered during the Holocaust. Putin’s rhetoric has been widely criticized as propaganda intended to galvanize Russian public support by invoking memories of World War II and framing Russia as a liberator once again.

Deportation and Forced Assimilation: An Echo of Nazi Tactics

Putin's government has implemented policies strikingly similar to the Nazi SS’s forced assimilation of Polish children. By deporting Ukrainian children and placing them in Russian families, where they are subjected to forced cultural assimilation, Russia's actions align closely with Nazi Germany’s efforts to “Germanize” select groups of Polish and Eastern European children. Both instances involve altering children's identities and erasing their connections to their heritage. International organizations, including the United Nations, have condemned this forced displacement as a possible war crime or even genocide, based on the intent to destroy a part of a national group by erasing its future generation's identity.

International Response and Historical Accountability

The deportations of Ukrainian children have garnered significant international backlash. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has even issued an arrest warrant for Putin and Russian Children's Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, charging them with war crimes related to these forced deportations. Such legal actions highlight the global community’s recognition that these practices are part of a disturbing strategy with historic precedents, particularly those that evoke the Nazi SS’s approach to occupied territories.

In essence, Putin's portrayal of Ukrainians as "Nazis" is not only misleading but also hypocritical, given that some of his policies mirror the very atrocities he claims to oppose. This has sparked widespread condemnation, especially from those familiar with World War II history, as Russia's policies seem to revive the oppressive tactics it once vowed to prevent.

Live in an Airbnb area? You'll experience increased crime!

A Cambridge-led study has concluded that those living in an area where there are a large number of Airbnbs are more likely to experience crime. Below is a list of the kind of areas where you're more likely to find Airbnbs.

The researchers found that where there was a 10 per cent rise in Airbnb properties in London there was an additional 1000 robberies across the year.

Sociologists suggest that the increase in crime is due to:
  • opportunities for crime are enhanced by holiday rental lets and;
  • Airbnb weakens social cohesion.

Dr Charles Lanfear of Cambridge's Institute of Criminology said:
"We tested for the most plausible alternative explanations, from changes in police patrols to tourist hotspots and even football matches. Nothing changed the core finding that Airbnb rentals are related to higher crime rates in London neighbourhoods. While Airbnb offers benefits to tourists and hosts in terms of ease and financial reward, there may be social consequences to turning a large swathes of city neighbourhoods into hotels with little regulation."

The research is published in the journal Criminology. I think it is fair to extrapolate the findings from London, UK to other places as this is about a core finding. Which is why I asked the question below.

Where are the most likely places to find AirBnbs?

Airbnbs can be found in a wide range of locations globally, but the most likely places to find them are areas that attract high tourism, business travel, or have large populations of travelers. These include:

1. Major Cities

  • Tourism Hubs: Popular cities like New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Barcelona are top choices for travelers. These cities are home to many cultural landmarks, restaurants, and business centers.
  • Business Centers: Cities that attract business travelers, such as San Francisco, Berlin, and Singapore, have many Airbnb listings near downtown areas, financial districts, and tech hubs.
  • University Towns: Places like Oxford, Cambridge, Boston, and Berkeley attract short-term stays for academic purposes.

2. Resort and Vacation Areas

  • Beach Destinations: Coastal areas like the Hawaiian Islands, Florida (Miami), the French Riviera, and Bali often have Airbnb properties. Travelers seek these spots for relaxation, making them hotspots for vacation rentals.
  • Mountain Retreats: Places like Aspen, Colorado; Chamonix, France; and the Swiss Alps are popular for skiing and outdoor activities, so vacation rentals are common.

3. Historic and Cultural Regions

  • Old Towns: Cities with historic districts like Rome, Florence, Kyoto, and Prague have high concentrations of Airbnb properties, especially in places with charming old-world architecture or UNESCO World Heritage sites.
  • Cultural Hubs: Destinations with rich art, music, and cultural offerings, such as Vienna, Mexico City, and Istanbul, are popular for short-term stays.

4. Suburban Areas and Smaller Towns

  • Close to Major Cities: Suburban areas near major cities often see Airbnb growth as travelers look for more affordable, quieter options. Examples include areas around Los Angeles, Chicago, or London.
  • Scenic Small Towns: Quaint, picturesque small towns like Sedona (Arizona), Bruges (Belgium), and Reykjavik (Iceland) draw tourists for their beauty and charm.

5. Event-Driven Locations

  • Festival Cities: Cities that host large events, such as Austin during South by Southwest (SXSW), Edinburgh for its Fringe Festival, or Munich for Oktoberfest, see a spike in Airbnb listings.
  • Sporting Event Cities: Cities that host major sporting events like the Olympics or World Cup often have a large number of Airbnb rentals during these periods.

6. Rural Areas and Off-the-Beaten-Path Locations

  • Countryside Retreats: Many rural areas, especially in Europe (Tuscany, Provence) and the US (Catskills, Vermont), have growing Airbnb markets as travelers look for nature escapes.
  • Unique Stays: People also seek out unusual or unique stays like treehouses, cabins, or tiny homes in remote or isolated areas.

These trends are influenced by factors like tourism demand, proximity to attractions, and unique experiences. The availability of Airbnbs in certain areas can also be regulated by local laws, which sometimes restrict short-term rentals.

Britain temporarily becomes Russia in imprisoning non-violent climate change activist for two years

Britain temporarily becomes Russia in imprisoning non-violent climate change activists for two years
Phoebe Plummer. Her X image.

NEWS AND COMMENT, UK: Of course this is my opinion. Share yours please. Many will disagree with me and they will be wrong. 😱 Britain has temporarily become Russia under Putin: a repressive state with a mindless, establishment judge hammering a couple of courageous protesters campaigning under the Just Stop Oil banner by imprisoning them for two years in the case of one protester and 18 months for the other for throwing Heinz soup over a Vincent van Gogh sunflower painting protected by glass in the National Gallery.

They knew that the painting was protected by glass. The prosecution argument is that the soup MAY have damaged the 17th-century frame. We don't know whether it was or wasn't. I doubt whether it was damaged. We should know.

So what they did was entirely visual. It was a visual statement and it worked in that sense. It has received lots of publicity but this government wants to stamp on perfectly respectful protests. Protests about climate change, which presents an extensional threat to the planet.

It is the young people of today who are nervous about the future because of climate change and other developments. The two women jailed for this extortionate amount of time for an entirely non-violent protest on a critical matter of importance to the survival of humankind are Phoebe Plummer and Anna Holland. Plummer told the hearing at which she was sentenced to 2 years in prison that she will take the punishment on the chin and smile.

Given the existential threat of global warming, the actions of the Just Stop Oil protestors can be seen as just and proper, even if they broke the law in doing so. Their protest caused no physical damage, did not lead to disorder, and was motivated by a genuine concern for the future of the planet. Rather than being punished, these activists should be recognized for their role in raising awareness of a global crisis that demands urgent attention. Praising rather than punishing them would not only acknowledge the gravity of the climate crisis, but also send a message that civil disobedience in the name of a just cause is a vital tool for driving social and political change.

Lousy judge

I think she's a wonderful person. As is Anna Holland. The horrible judge, part of the establishment, who I would totally disrespect because of this unwarranted punishment, is Judge Christopher Hehir. He signalled beforehand that he would punish them severely and he has. A ghastly man. He is taking orders from the government, I would allege which is illegal.

He appears to have justified the punishment in saying the following. They crossed the line from "concerned campaigner to fanatic". In addition he said that the "cultural treasure" could have been "seriously damaged or even destroy".

That is entirely incorrect. This judge, I think, is showing his hatred for these protesters. He is allowing his emotions to affect his judgement which should be an objective process, a fair process. Yes, this couple of young women should be punished for causing minor, very minor criminal damage I would argue in the cause of a great protest but it should be a very mild punishment (a small fine) because their cause is critical to the survival of the planet.

The lawyer representing the couple said that they knew there was glass over the painting and therefore the painting would not be damaged. The judge got this entirely wrong.

New copy protest

And remarkably, three new Just Stop Oil protesters have now been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after they threw some more soup over two versions of Vincent van Gogh's sunflowers at the National Gallery. This is a fresh protest in protest over the overly harsh sentencing of the couple of young women now languishing in jail.

This recent development is a great one. Judges can't go on imprisoning protesters and campaigners against the continued burning of oil and gas, exacerbating climate change, in the UK because firstly there are not enough spaces in prison to imprison these people because of a lack of prison construction over the years.

Madness of imprisonment

And secondly, this government has decided that imprisonment is not a good form of punishment. They recently released over 1,500 prisoners. These were men who committed real crimes. This government is releasing genuine criminals, often harden criminals, who are in and out of jail all the time and imprisoning people who are fighting for the survival of humankind! It is totally bonkers.

This new group of three Just Stop Oil activists been arrested and they made a good point. Their spokesperson, Phil Green, said that the 25 supporters of their group now currently in jail would be regarded by future generations as being "prisoners of conscience" and on the right side of history.

This is a good video. Important:

In future years we will look back at the imprisonment of these activists has wholly incorrect and unwarranted. We will look back at the madness of it. These people are doing something good. This should be praised. They have been forced into carrying out these dramatic protests in order to get the attention of the media and the government. If the government was doing something about global warming they'd be no protests. Just Stop Oil wouldn't exist if governments worldwide were doing their job and making genuine progress on protecting the planet.

The suffragettes’ struggle is an excellent analogy for today’s climate activism. Like the suffragettes, climate activists are working for a just and necessary cause in the face of institutional inertia and societal resistance. The harsh punishments they face today may one day be seen, as the suffragettes’ punishments are now, as unjust responses to moral bravery. Just as we now honor the suffragettes for their role in advancing human rights, future generations may honor today's environmental activists for their role in protecting the planet.

CCTV pictures of a woman who burgled a house and stole three cats accompanied by four children!

This story comes from Clitheroe, Lancashire, UK. It's rather sad because a mother who needs to be identified by the police burgled a home and stole three cats from that home while being accompanied by four children.

It appears, and this is the allegation, that she took her four children into this home and allowed them to watch her theft of three cats. That, I think you would agree, is highly irresponsible for the fact that it's a crime and that it might teach children about criminal behaviour.

The police have issued the CCTV photograph that you see on this page and ask people to notify them if they recognise the woman.

CCTV pictures of a woman who burgled a house and stole three kittens accompanied by four children!
CCTV image: Source: local police force.

The story is that she and her children left in a vehicle down Lowergate in the direction of Highfield Road, Clitheroe, UK, at around 1 PM on Tuesday, September 3. They burgled a home on Moor Lane.

The strange and probably remarkable fact about the story is that the mother took her four children along with her when she burgled the home. We don't know more but the pictures are good enough to identify her.

Another strange aspect of the stories that the police historically have showed a complete disinterest in investigating burglaries in the UK. This has been the status quo for very many years, which is why there are more burglars than the should be in the country. Although burglary is less profitable to criminals than online fraud.

In this story we have to think about the cats as well and the owner of the cats. These cats have been taken from their home range, their home, and they will be disturbed and frightened. And of course the owner will be distraught if he or she is any good at their job of domestic cat caregiving.

There is a very strong emotional distress element to cat and dog theft by which I mean the caregiver can suffer tremendously for a very long time. This makes the theft of a sentient being more important to police than an inanimate object, I would argue.

In the UK, the theft of domestic animals has increased. It's quite a profitable form of criminality. Sometimes animals are stolen to breed which of course depends upon whether they can breed i.e. whether they be neutered or not.

I suspect that this woman has in mind breeding cats to make some money. She might have known that the cats had not been spayed or neutered. You see a lot of kittens for sale on social media from unscrupulous sellers. Sometimes the prices are inordinately high for non-purebred cats.

It depends on the appearance. If the kittens look great then people are more prepared to pay good money for them even if they are not purebred. Humans are very much focused on appearance. And sometimes unscrupulous people sell random bread cats as purebred cats.

That said, it's entirely possible that the three stolen cats are in fact purebred. I made the presumption that they weren't but I could be wrong.

Video of woman being arrested in a public place for eating someone's cat

Video of woman being arrested outside for eating someone's cat

Here is the video on X. It is weird and painful to realise that this woman allegedly ate a domestic cat and apparently there are witnesses so it seems she ate the cat in a public place. Dare I ask: "Did she kill and cook the cat, or did she just kill the cat and eat it raw?"

Makes me puke to think about it. But is it true? Remarkably it seems that there is a claim from Republicans that Haitian migrants in Springfield, OH are killing and eating pets. This arrest might be linked to that story. These claims are it seems politically motivated to boost Trump's campaign because he is very much against immigrants. The woman above is I believe Allexis Telia Ferrell and the place is Canton, OH, about 200 miles from Springfield.

I have just written about Trump's incredibly poor decision-making to rant and rave about this viral social media story in the presidential debate when it is not based on hard fact [link to follow-up article]. A terrible decision by him and he has egg on his face.
On Monday, social media was flooded with posts from prominent conservative lawmakers and commentators claiming Haitian migrants in the town of Springfield, Ohio, were brutalizing and consuming local cats and ducks. - Rolling Stone

If she did eat a cat she must have been high on drugs surely. No other way a person could do that unless they were mentally ill. Days later the information is that this is 'fake' news but the picture is not clear.

The police officer wanted the Humane Society to take the deceased cat away. A bit odd that. Surely the cat should have been kept as evidence and after a trial cremated. It looks like the police had no intention of charging the woman and taking the matter to trial. Perhaps the police don't believe the witnesses. Perhaps this supports the claims that this is all bogus political shenanigans.

Linked article: Haitians killing and eating pet cats in Ohio? True or false? This is an evolving and therefore somewhat fragmented story.

This is a quote from The Mirror:

During his first debate with Kamala Harris, former President Trump told the millions of viewers: "They're eating the dogs, the people that came in. They're eating the cats, they're eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what is happening in this country and it is a shame."

On the issue as to whether the allegation that Haitian migrants are killing and eating pet dogs and cats, Viles Dorsainvil, president of Springfield's Haitian Community Help and Support Center, told NBC News: "It's just bigotry, discrimination and racism. There is a group of people who have been fabricating some news just to denigrate Haitians."

JD Vance has admitted that "It's possible, of course, that all of these rumours will turn out to be false."

Although Trump insisted that they were true and as mentioned on this page, the Springfield city manager's statement that "there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community," means that it's unlikely that the claims are true. And as mentioned also on this page I have hinted before that there appears to be an agenda here based on racism. Although a proper investigation would help.

Veterinary nurse pleads guilty to owning dogs that worried livestock

This story is about a veterinary nurse, Evie Watson, who, it has been suggested, should have known better when going out into the countryside with her two dogs near to a farm called Hall Pastures Farm where there were sheep and lambs. She didn't have one of her dogs, Beans, on a lead and her other dog's lead was dropped as she tried to untangle him. That dog's name is Patcho.

In short, both her dogs became free and they ran off and worried, attacked and killed sheep and lambs. In all, it's reported by The Times that her dogs killed 15 ewes (adult female sheep) and lambs in an horrific attack. Further, the newspaper reports that she did not call the police until the following day.

It's been traumatic for the farmer as you might expect. Lynne Parnell, said that she felt "very sickened" by the attacks and mentioned that she had wished that Watson had told her what had happened straight away.

It's been traumatic for the ewes who lost their lambs. In a victim impact statement she said: "Farmers like us work hard, and our livelihood depends on us producing good quality livestock and [it] is a long term enterprise. A disruption such as this can take years to recover from".

Evie Watson attended Southern Derbyshire magistrates' court on May 17 and pleaded guilty to owning dogs that worried livestock. The magistrates told her that it had been an horrific incident but they recognised her efforts in trying to track down her dogs, one of which had collapsed. She took him to the vet. Watson had tried to follow her dogs and bruised herself as she scrambled in bushes but she lost sight of them. She asked her family and ex-partner for help and they assisted. She found her dogs after 3.5 hours.

So Watson did make some big efforts but she's been criticised by Derbyshire Police. Sergeant Chris Wilkinson of the rural crime team said: "No one ever wants to believe that their dog is capable of hurting other animals but as has been seen time and time again they can and do return to their predator instincts, and chase livestock if given the chance. That's why it is vital that dogs are always kept on leads around livestock."

That's the point: dogs revert to their grey wolf ancestors' instincts and become predators when given the chance. The same happens to domestic cats. The dog is a predator and as such they must be on a lead under the circumstances described.

Separately, a survey of 1,100 dog owners by NFU Mutual has found that 68% of people let their pets off the lead in the countryside last year. And almost 8% admitted that their dog had chased livestock. However, 46% believed that the dog was not capable of causing death or injury to farm animals. While 49% of the respondents in this survey said that the dog always came back when called. In other words 51% don't. And almost half of dog owners don't believe that their dog is a predator it seems to me!

As Watson was convicted of owning dogs that worried livestock, she was ordered to pay £750 which included a £475 fine, legal costs and a victim surcharge. The farmer said that the punishment was insulting but added that she at least received justice.

Burglars released rescue cats from their cages but stole nothing

There are two different stories, which I think intersect, in the news media today. The Times reports that the UK police have given up punishing shoplifters. Some time ago the police in the UK said that they would not attend shoplifting to the value of £200.

Minor crime allowed to flourish in the UK because the police have abdicated their responsibilities

And, in my view, since then they've loosened that requirement even further so nowadays as far as I can tell the police don't attend even mass shoplifting by organised gangs at supermarkets.

It's become a free for all. The old adage that if you allow minor crime to flourish you lead the way to extreme crime applies in this instance. This should be zero tolerance. As soon as the police advertise to the world that they are ignoring all forms of shoplifting they are opening the door to crimes of other types including more serious crime.

The Times reports that: "Police officers have almost entirely ceased pursuing shoplifters despite the number of offences soaring to record levels, analysis of official figures reveals."

Tell me something new! We've known about this for years and years. There has been a gradual learning process by criminals that they are perfectly safe to walk into a supermarket and take items off the shelves as they wish and then walk out of the premises.

We've seen gangs of people stripping the shelves of steaks and salmon and walking out of the supermarket in complete impunity to prosecution. It is very shocking indeed.

Burglars released rescue cats from their cages

Burglary at cat rescue centre?

And that background is important because today, the BBC reports that animal rescue staff have been shocked by the mindless actions of burglars who broke into their sanctuary and let out rescue cats.

The rescue centre is called Compassion for Cats. It is based in Oak Hill, near Shepton Mallet, in Somerset. Judy Knowles, 71, discovered on Monday that the site had been broken into and doors had been left open for rescued cats to escape.

Eight of them are still missing. She is in shock she said. She reported the break into the local Avon and Somerset Police but I suspect that they will do little about it because, for me, their attitude is terrible as mentioned above regarding shoplifting.

It isn't just shoplifting. Burglars have been left alone to their devices for many many years. Burglaries were always rated as of very low importance by the police across the UK. This is despite the fact that burglars are very distressing to people because their home has been invaded by nasty criminals.

But the police just did not want to deal with burglaries and I suspect that they will do little or nothing about trying to find these rescued cats which have dispersed throughout the community.

Judy Knowles said that it appears that the elderly cats had been disturbed possibly chased around and some of them were very distressed. She can't understand why somebody would do this and it is noticeable that nothing was stolen.

Perhaps, actually, these were not classic burglars looking for money but animal advocates looking to release rescue cats. But that would be a terrible mistake because these cats were slated to be rehomed as that is the general intention of all cat rescue centres.

Anyway, this story is about the police actually. The police's failure to deal with what was once minor crime and is now a major crime because the country is looking at organised gangs carrying out shoplifting. This is no longer on individual deciding to nick something. It's far far bigger than that. Shame on the UK police.

The new Home Secretary said she'd do something about! Fat chance.

UK woman jailed for 15 months for a Facebook comment

NEWS AND OPINION: A woman, Julie Sweeney, 53, with no previous criminal record whatsoever, has been jailed for 15 months by (in my opinion) a reactionary establishment judge because she made a comment on Facebook which she said was encouraged by other similar comments that a mosque should be blown up. Obviously the comment was totally unacceptable, racist and quite horrible but the question is whether jailing her for 15 months was proportionate and appropriate and I think it is.

Photo: AP.

The exact comment she made is:  "Don't protect the mosques, blow the mosque up with the adults in it."

She made the comment on Facebook during the recent riots/protests which were a reaction to the killing of young girls in a playground by a 17-year-old Somali teenager who was born in the country (UK - Wales) but social media said that he was an immigrant seeking refugee status.

Yes there are lies all over the Internet about it on social media which helped to fire up the protesters many of whom have now been jailed, some for three years and more.

She pleaded guilty to sending a communication to convey a threat of death or serious harm.

There was a determined effort by the establishment encouraged by the Labour government to squash these protesters and send a clear message to others not to protest or riot.

But this woman I think has been unjustly treated. But the judge, Judge Steven Everett, heavily criticised her in court saying that her comments were inflammatory and disgusting. In addressing her, he said: "You should have been looking at the news and media with horror like every right-minded person. Instead, you chose to take part in stirring up hatred."

Fair enough, she should have been punished for this comment. It was horrific and wrong. She admits she was stupid. She was part of a Facebook channel of which there were 5,100 members. There was quite a big audience to a comment which exacerbated her crime. The judge called her a "keyboard warrior". He said that she had to learn to take responsibility for the her language.

But it was a single comment on a single day and normally she lives a quiet sheltered life in Cheshire and has not troubled the courts in her long life according to the barrister defending her in court.

The question here is about freedom of speech. The Labour government has decided to crack down on these protesters but at the same time they are curbing freedom of speech. The government wants their version of freedom of speech. They will allow certain types of speech and disallow others. According to Frank Furedi in The Times newspaper, in a comment, "It seems the government and its allies in the media and various cultural institutions have declared a war on free speech."

I agree with that. The government is trying to strengthen the current legislation to tighten freedom of speech and to restrict "legal but harmful content". Unfortunately this phrase is subjective and political.

Frank said that "A government that claims a monopoly on determining what is truth and what isn't is a far greater threat to Britain's public life than the targets of its censorship."

British zoologist jailed for grotesque and shocking abuse of dogs

NEWS AND OPINION: Sadly, this new story is all over the Internet probably because it is so "grotesque". It is one of the most sickening examples of animal abuse by an individual ever recorded in my view. The British zoologist who committed these crimes is Adam Britton, 53, a crocodile expert. He pleaded guilty to 63 charges in an Australian court including bestiality, animal cruelty and possessing child abuse material. He was jailed for 10 years and 5 months in Australia yesterday. He admitted to killing dozens of dogs.

Image: MikeB based on an image deemed to be in the public domain.

He was a globally renowned crocodile expert. His reputation now, of course, is completely trashed. He had worked on BBC and National Geographic productions prior to being arrested in 2022. I can remember when that story first emerged.

The judge who sentenced Mr Britton to 10 years in jail described his behaviour as "unspeakable" and "grotesque".

Michael Grant, the Northern Territory Supreme Court Chief Justice warned that some details of the crimes that he had committed were too graphic to be published and he recommended that members of the public leave the court room.

Britain acquired 42 dogs online between 2020 and 2022. He promised their owners she would give them a good home as per an ABC report (Australia's national broadcaster).

Rather than giving them a good home as he promised, he filmed himself raping, torturing and killing them in a shipping container on this property in Darwin according to the ABC report. He shared the video footage on Telegram under a pseudonym.

People who attended the trial in the public gallery were seen crying and gasping as the offences were read out.

The judge said during sentencing: "You're sheer and unalloyed pleasure is sickeningly evident from the recorded material." Britton showed no emotion during sentencing.

Britain grew up in West Yorkshire. He obtained a PhD at the University of Bristol and then moved to Australia. He settled in the Northern Territory. He became a respected academic at Charles Darwin University.

He was considered to be an expert on saltwater crocodiles. He appeared on TV with celebrities including David Attenborough.

Outside the court, animal rights advocates gathered and labelled him a "zoo-sadist". They say that he deserves the death penalty. The death penalty has been outlawed in Australia since 1985.

He can apply for parole in April 2028. He is banned from owning mammals for the rest of his life.

Although the newspapers don't discuss this and I can only touch on it, he must have learnt this grotesque form of animal abuse somewhere from someone. I don't think humans inherit this kind of behaviour. And therefore, I would respectfully suggest that he learnt it from his parents perhaps his father. I think that point needs to be investigated actually. And we don't know whether he has children. If he has children has he passed on his miscreant behaviour to his kids? There is always a cycle of violence within a family. One generation passing it on to the next. It applies very starkly in the area of sport and trophy hunting. We see parents teaching their kids to hunt for pleasure. All animal advocates detest trophy hunting because it's so cruel and it is for the pleasure of the hunter.

Unrelentingly kind, Oxford-educated mum got four years' jail because she rented a safe house to Just Stop Oil

OPINION: Louise Lancaster is described by Theo, her son, as "unrelentingly kind". He added that, "In almost any situation she will put others first." Louise Lancaster is the kind of person who is the backbone of  Britain.

She studied maths at Oxford. She is smart and decent and normal and is the kind of person that Britain should be proud of and protect. But she was jailed for four years because she rented a safe house for Just Stop Oil, the group campaigning against the government's inactivity to deal with climate change properly.

Louise Lancaster and family in a selfie. Image: Louise Lancaster on the left.

Other protesters were jailed for four years and the organiser, Roger Hallam, was jailed for five years. This was a peaceful protest. It is unheard of to be jailed for five or four years for a peaceful protest. Her ex-husband, Tim, said that she expected to be convicted and jailed and was prepared for it emotionally. And she prepared her family for it as well. Because she was thinking of others again.

Nevertheless the family was shocked at the sentence. Tim said: "To get a sentence that is way longer than you would get for violent crime [the average UK sentence for violent crime is 21.6 months]. It feels terribly unjust."

Destruction of democracy in the UK in silencing climate change campaigners

The sentencing took place under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 which was amended to allow for harsher punishments to these sorts of protesters. For people like me, the increased power to judges to hand out more severe punishments for peace protests is almost a fascist act. It's drifting towards a Russia-like situation. It's entirely unacceptable.

It did not come naturally for Louise Lancaster to be involved in a Just Stop Oil protest campaign. She just felt something had to be done about the lack of activity in dealing with global warming. She must have given it a hell of a lot of thought. Initially both Louise and her husband joined marches and signed petitions and wrote to their MP.

They thought people were noticing but they decided that they weren't and at one stage, Louise said to her husband: "Look, we did all of that and nothing changed. We have to do something else."

About 2020 she started to see non-violent direct action as a way of getting the government's attention. And so she became involved in Just Stop Oil's activities. It led to 4 years in jail which I would think will be commuted to 2 years or even less. She is quite happy to be in jail actually and has got her vegan diet organised in prison at last.

She has reassured her kids and has a smile on her face. When her kids saw her off when she went to prison they gave her a hug. Verity, her daughter, burst into tears while "Mum broke into a massive smile".

She told Verity that she was going to be fine and that she will be helping other women in prison fill out forms and would do some online courses and work on her pullups!

She is a lovely woman and this horrendous judge, Judge Christopher Hehir, did the government's bidding and put her in prison for four years because she rented a safe house for the campaigners. She also organised some climbing equipment. She was behind the scenes. She's now front and centre in the mainstream news.

And everything she's done and the punishment she received SCREAMS injustice. Britain has become an unjust place riddled with petty crime. The police don't tackle any shoplifting and they hardly tackle burglaries. Theft, fraud and even large-scale crime is rampant in the UK and it is undermining society. Almost none of it goes punished but Louise Lancaster was severely punished for trying to tell the government to do something about global warming. It is turning justice on its head.

Child rapist allowed to compete at Olympics while an equestrian who gently whipped a horse is banned?

----------------

This is a short note on something which troubled Nick Ferrari on LBC this morning. LBC is a popular British radio station and Nick Ferrari is a very popular, long-standing presenter on that station. He saw a disconnect or a lack of equality in the way two Olympians have been treated by the authorities.

Charlotte Dujardin is all over the news because she was secretly videoed using a lunging whip on a horse being trained for dressage, ridden by a young rider. This is a very long whip which might at worst sting a horse but it's a fairly benign training instrument which is an extension of the arms. That said she made a terrible mistake in whipping this trainee horse. She admitted it. But her illustrious career as a former gold medallist is in tatters because of the revelation.

She's been banned from going for another gold medal which would have made her Britain’s most decorated female Olympian in her own right. And she has lost funding from the UK authorities. Her reputation is in tatters as mentioned.

She's not been been charged with any animal welfare offence. And therefore she not been found guilty of a crime. Although we don't know whether she regularly used that kind of whipping treatment in her training programs. There is no suggestion that she did but the fact that she was filmed doing it might arguably indicate that she has used the method before.

What did Charlotte Dujardin do to force her to withdraw from the Olympics? - click this for her full story.

But set against that bleak picture for Charlotte Dujardin, we have the story of Steven van de Veld, a convicted child rapist who was convicted of raping a British 12-year-old girl in 2016. He was subsequently tried and convicted and has been punished according to the law. And he's allowed to compete at the Paris Olympics. The IOC is facing calls for an investigation into how a convicted child rapist has been allowed to compete at these games.

There is growing outrage at the presence of Steven van de Velde in the volleyball competition. Some senior people believe that it is irresponsible of the authorities to allow him there. It sends the wrong signal to the world at large. And there's an argument that even though he has served his sentence and been punished he should not be allowed to compete because the Olympic Games is about creating a harmonious environment. It's about promoting high standards. It's about excellence in sport and in general behaviour. These are top athletes who are influencers.

Many of them who are awarded gold medals will be strong influencers in the future of young people in particular and this underscores the need for them to be of good character.

There is an argument for banning Van de Velde from the Olympics and if that had happened it would put him in line with the ban of Charlotte Dujardin. It would make more sense. At the moment there seems to be a high degree of inequality between these two athletes and the application of different standards.

Would there be more crime without police? Answer is not clear!

It may have occurred to you that the police force is irrelevant. Why spend billions of dollars or pounds on the police if they achieve nothing? They may be so corrupt that they add to the crime rate. That's certainly true of some countries.
Shoplifting up by Michael Broad

--------------

Put it this way: there is no direct correlation with the presence of police and less crime or the lack of presence of police and more crime. It is a very difficult area of discussion. Below are the thoughts of Google's Gemini there artificial intelligence computer. They make the point that there might not be more crime without police which is a very troubling thought.

However, what got me thinking about this is the news today about shoplifting at a record high in the UK as thieves operate without fear. This has been an ongoing problem in the UK for many years. It's got worse and worse over the years as thieves have come to recognise the fact that the police do not attend shoplifting crimes. They have publicly declared to the world that they will not deal with shoplifting.

And because of that, thieves know that they can commit these crimes with impunity. This, then, confirms that the presence of police deters crime. And it confirms in at least one way that there would be more crime without police. Because in the UK there are no police, in effect, when it comes to shoplifting.

It is rampant. Personally, I see people next to me on self-service machines stealing food in supermarkets. It's quite commonplace. This forces up the prices so people like me have to pay the miscreant behaviour of ordinary citizens.

And the report today is that "Shoplifting has reached its highest level since records began more than 20 years ago as thieves operate without fear."

The number of shoplifting offences recorded by police in England and Wales is up 30% compared with last year.

Police forces logged 443,995 shoplifting offences in the year to last March. This is the highest since records began in 2003. Overall fraud incidents rose by 8% or 1.2 million offences compared to last year. There's been a surge in offences. The public is concerned. The public is mystified as to why the police have allowed this to happen.

What's worse is that the data probably represents a tiny fraction of what is actually happening. The true levels of theft is much higher. It causes apprehension in citizens.

Burglaries are also hardly ever attended by the police. There are almost no arrests of burglars in the UK. That has been the state of play for a long time. The police have completely abandoned the British public with respect to these offences.

Even when they investigate separate figures show that proportion of crime investigations recorded in the year to March which were closed without a suspect rose to 40.2% from 39.3% in the previous year.

Finally, I can't ignore the theft of companion animals. It's all part and parcel of the same problem. There are more thefts of companion animals nowadays than before. This causes huge distress in caregivers. I don't think the police fully recognise this. They don't recognise the emotional context. The police are asleep basically and have been for years in my view.

Knife crime

The Times also has an article about "Children seriously hurt by knives up 50% in a decade". The report goes on to state that "The number of young people suffering serious injuries from knife crime has risen almost 50% in a decade, with black children six times more likely to be murdered than other children, a landmark report reveals."

This is just another aspect of crime generally in the UK. It's frankly shocking. And it is undermining the well-being of Britain's citizens. It might even be linked to the fact that a far too high a proportion of working people in the UK are not working. Some experts put it down to mental health issues. It might be because they're just lazy but perhaps they simply have given up on integrating with society because what they see in the newspapers is too bad.

Livestock crime

The police are also impotent in stopping livestock crime in the UK. A sheep farmer returned from his father's funeral to discover an organised crime gang had stolen 300 ewes and lambs from his field. The farmer believes that the lambs and mountain ewes were taken away in an unmarked lorry by somebody who knew about the funeral. The cost of livestock theft of farmers has reached a four-year high in 2023 with £2.7 million worth of cattle, sheep and pig stolen often by organised gangs according to a Times report. Another example of how a lack of police presence encourages crime. This supports the view that without police there would be more crime. It depends upon the community of course and whether they are predisposed to committing crime or not!

Gemini's response to the question

Whether or not there would be more crime without police is a complex question with no easy answer. Here's a breakdown of some key points to consider:

Arguments for More Crime:

  • Deterrence: Police act as a deterrent, with the threat of arrest and punishment discouraging some potential criminals.
  • Investigation and Apprehension: Police investigate crimes and attempt to apprehend offenders, removing them from the streets.
  • Maintaining Order: Police presence can help maintain public order and prevent situations from escalating into crime.

Arguments for Less Crime:

  • Over-Policing: Excessive policing, particularly in marginalized communities, can lead to overcriminalization and erode trust between communities and law enforcement.
  • Ineffective Policing: Not all policing strategies are equally effective in reducing crime. Some approaches may even lead to increased crime.
  • Root Causes: Many crimes are driven by underlying social issues like poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunity. Addressing these root causes could have a greater impact on crime rates than simply increasing police presence.

The Bottom Line:

There's no definitive answer to this question. The relationship between police and crime is complex and varies depending on numerous factors. It's important to consider the potential consequences of both maintaining the status quo and reforming or abolishing the police.

Destruction of democracy in the UK in silencing climate change campaigners

A shocking threat to rights of free speech in the UK has just occurred. This is not just about the right of free speech, it also about climate change in how governments deal with it.

The UK is edging towards a fascist state as far as I'm concerned. This latest criminal court judgement supports my thinking.  Please read Hallam's enormous tweet which is at the end of this article. You get first hand reporting. The judge was arrogant and wrong. Very wrong.

I can't find the judge's reasoning. I think he referred to the campaigners as 'fanatics'. I also think he was very biased against them and it would not surprise me if he did not believe that climate change exists and drives an enormous SUV. Yes, I am pissed off with this judge. It is not just me.

The former lord chancellor, Lord Falconer of Thoroton said that he was 'uncomfortable' with the sentences although Sir Robert Buckland said they were justified.

--------------

A record five-year jail term has been handed out to Roger Hallam, 58, for coordinating the climate change protests under the Just Stop Oil banner which disrupted the M25 in London over four days in 2022.

45 protesters climbed gantries on the motorway, forcing police to stop the traffic. Four others, campaigners in the Just Stop Oil organisation, were each jailed for four years. They were found guilty of conspiring to cause a public nuisance under a new draconian law which curbs free-speech and peaceful protest.

This is controversial legislation introduced by the previous government to get tough on disruptive tactics used by environmental protesters. They were charged under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022.

There is shock over this sentence which is a record for a person engaged in peaceful protest. Yes, I will capitalise that: PEACEFUL PROTEST.

The previous Conservative government got their knickers in a twist over these Just Stop Oil protests because they were very disruptive. That made them effective. These campaigners felt that they had to be disruptive in order to make their statement clear to everybody. That's the nature of a peaceful protest. But the right wing government now ousted by Labour, decided to clampdown on them and at the same time clampdown on free speech. And also at the same time to ignore climate change.

It's utterly shocking to people like me. And to Chris Packham, the naturalist and broadcaster. He said that the sentence of five years handed down to Roger Hallam, was a threat to free speech and he has called for a meeting with Richard Hermer KC, the attorney general, "as rapidly as possible so that we could address this grotesque miscarriage of justice".

He also said that we need to be "clear, be very very clear this is not just about climate activism. The laws that have been drafted, the injustices that are being wrought, threaten all rights of free speech. We stand here today because our future security may be compromised by the reckless and irresponsible erosion of human rights, of our fundamental freedoms. I stand here because I believe this represents the direct theft of our freedom, the destruction of our democracy, the deliberate and calculated intimidation of our protesters, and that, unless we resist this, the very real danger is our species will destroy life on earth will stop"

He's of course referring to climate change which really concerns him as it should concern all of us. He is a conservationist. He was to protect wildlife which is increasingly under dire threat across the globe because of global warming.

The sentencing is particularly grotesque as this government has decided to release criminals after 40% of their sentence. The country is releasing genuine criminals early in order to make room in overcrowded prisons while at the same time clearly, over-punishing genuine people who are concerned about the future of humankind on this planet. It is BONKERS.

There have been calls to repeal the above-mentioned act. The sentence was also criticised by Tom Southerden, Amnesty International UK's law and human rights adviser. He wants the act repealed. He said that "These lengthy jail sentences for people seeking climate justice should increase the alarm over the ongoing crackdown against peaceful protest in this country, which violates all our human rights. With our overcrowded prison system already described as a ticking timebomb by the new Lord Chancellor these jail terms are all the more indefensible."

The judge who handed down this grotesque sentence is Judge Christopher Hehir. Shame on him. He is not worthy to be a judge.

Update:

Hallam said this (and a lot more - see his tweet below):

The crime?
Giving a talk on civil disobedience as an effective, evidence-based method for stopping the elite from putting enough carbon in the atmosphere to send us to extinction. I have given hundreds of similar speeches encouraging nonviolent action and have never been arrested for it. This time I was an advisor to the M25 motorway disruption, recommending the action to go ahead to wake up the British public to societal collapse.
His tweet:

From Just Stop Oil:

Professor McGuire, Emeritus Professor of Geophysical & Climate Hazards at University College London, said:

“The trial and verdict were a farce. They mark a low point in British justice and they were an assault on free speech. The judge’s characterisation of climate breakdown as a matter of opinion and belief is completely nonsensical and demonstrates extraordinary ignorance. Similarly to suggest that the climate emergency is irrelevant in relation to whether the defendants had a reasonable case for action is crass stupidity.”

Sir David King, the government’s former Chief Scientific Adviser, said:

“This is so disgraceful. We are all hoping that the change in UK Govt will also change the situation in our courts.”

As mentioned, this legislation is controversial. It provides for stiffer sentences for protesters who block roads. It was backed by the current Prime Minister. But it has been condemned by the United Nations human rights Commissioner as "deeply troubling" and "disproportionate".

In sentencing, Judge Christopher Hehir, told the activists:

"The plain fact is that each of you some time ago has crossed the line from concerned campaigner to fanatic. You have appointed yourselves as sole arbiters of what should be done about climate change."

Comment:
it appears to me that he is introducing his personal opinion about these campaigners. It seems to me to be biased to describe the most fanatics.

Hallam described the criminal court that he attended as a "kangaroo court".

The trial was criticised by the UN's Special Rapporteur for Environmental Defenders, Michel Forst, who described the threat of a long sentence against Daniel Shaw [one of the defendants sentenced to 4 years] as potentially unlawful. Speaking on the eve of the first day of the trial, he warned: "The imposition of such a sanction is not only appalling but may also violate the United Kingdom's obligations under international law."

The danger is that the harsh sentences will fire up the campaigners to do more. It will be a catalyst for more extreme action against climate change inertia.

The next day

The next day, in The Times, there's a long list of celebrities and well-known people who have written about the injustice of these prison sentences. In fact, more than 1100 lawyers, academics, artists and celebrities have called for an urgent meeting with the attorney general to address the injustice of the sentences given to 5 environmental activists according to a report by the Times.

It is notable that the jail terms exceed those given to Just Stop Oil activists who scaled the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge Dartford Crossing in October 2022. It is also longer than many far more serious crimes such as a police officer attempting rape as I understand it. I think you'll find that rapist in the UK get prison terms of around five years sometimes.

The Prime Minister has faced calls to intervene in this case. In addition, the UN Human Rights Commissioner described the sentences as deeply troubling and disproportionate.

The millionaire Labour donor, Dale Vince, has called for a meeting with the attorney general, Richard Hermer KC.

In their letter of 1100 signatories, they echoed the call by Dale Vince and Chris Packham. Those who signed it include Lord Williams of Oystermouth, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Sir Geoffrey Bindman KC, one of the country's most distinguished human rights lawyers and the artist Dame Tracey Emin. Sir David King, the former chief scientific adviser to the government also signed the letter. There are many others including Toby Jones, the star of Mr Bates vs The Post Office and Danny Boyle, the director of the film Trainspotting.

The general consensus is that "With prisons a breaking point how can these sentences be seen as anything other than insanity".

Further update The Times Wednesday, August 14, 2024: the protesters who were jailed for four years and Hallam the leader, who was jailed for five years are appealing against their record sentences claiming that the terms breached international law and are longer than those handed to rioters. It has transpired that the judge refused the opportunity of the protesters to explain their motivations for taking such action. And they were barred from producing evidence of the immediate threat posed by climate change. That would seem to be a serious omission and a bias by the judge.

A petition has been started in America by an American-based campaign group which has condemned the "gagging and jailing of peaceful climate protesters in UK courts." The petition argues that the laws are repressive and they have called on PM Starmer to repeal them. It has garnered 20,000 signatures to date.

The activists are arguing that the sentences were manifestly excessive and that the judge "appears to have punished the defendants for disobeying his orders not to explain their motivations for taking such actions."
