Range of Siamese Cat Points

Here is a picture by Flickr photographer Chris Isherwood of his Siamese cats and an Oriental Shorthair (an associated cat breed). I have guessed (incorrectly on two occasions!) what type of pointing the cats have:

One aspect of the cats that you can see clearly is the smooth single coat that lies close to the skin. This is typical of Siamese cats. It is in complete contrast to the shaggy long coat of the Maine Coon and the dense tight coat of the British Shorthair.

Comparison between lilac and chocolate point Siamese

This is a really nice photo to show the differences in pointing color. The difference between lilac and chocolate is very noticeable as can be seen in these photos.

But I think a couple of things need to be noted. The difference between lilac and blue can be subtle sometimes and pointing color does vary depending on the breeding of the individual cats concerned.

These are modern Siamese cats but not too slender it seems to me.

Lilac pointing is a dilute chocolate pointing.

Lilac point Siamese cats are one of the big four colours or better described as one of the original four colors of pointing of the Siamese cat. It is a traditional pointing color although the seal color is the original.

The CFA recognize four point colors which are: lilac, blue, seal and chocolate.

The lilac color is dilute brown. Dilute black is called blue in the cat fancy. Lilac is a "rosier shade of blue" (Robinson's Genetics). The genotype is aabbdd. Lilac pointed Siamese are called "frost point" by some associations. Lilac point and blue point are similar in appearance.
