Cats' kidneys are located in the lower abdomen towards the hind legs. When you watch a veterinarian check the kidneys using palpation techniques (by feel with the fingers of the hands) they are feeling in an area that is forward of the hind legs on the undersides of the cat but towards the flank (side) of the cat.
There are two kidneys - the same as for humans - so the vet will feel on both sides probably simultaneously using both hands.
I wouldn't advise a non-qualified person using palpation to check internal organs. This is a skilled task for trained and experienced people.
