Cat poison

Note: this page was written around 13 years ago. I have just added a few more lines (April 29th 2023) and there have been many other updates. I could add some more as cat poison is a very big topic. It is still valid and it contains over 300 comments. At the time it was controversial and provocative.

The page is a little haphazard but I believe useful but don't come here to figure out how to poison cats. If you do that, you'll be an AH and possibly a criminal.

Aussie authorities are poisoners

The Australian authorities are the planet's biggest cat poisoners bar none. Yes, they like to poison feral cats with sausages chucked out of helicopters laced with 1080 poison (Sodium fluoroacetate) which kills slowly as I recall. And they've built a device which chucks poison over a feral cat or any animal that walks by. It is motion sensor activated. The cat licks their coat and bingo they're dead after a while. Highly immoral. But they don't mind. And they don't mind destroying the habitat of their small native marsupials and mammals despite the fact that they kill feral cats to try and protect them. Hypocritical comes to mind and thoughtless.

As I said below it is normally a crime to poison cats but not in Aussie land when it comes to feral cats which they detest. It is the same in Kiwi land.

Flea treatments

Flea treatments not infrequently poison cats because for example a cat owner may use a dog flea treatment on their cat. Bingo, another cat accidentally poisoned to death by their owner. Or they want to help their cat by administering painkillers. Human painkillers are plain killers when used on cats. Another accidental way to poison a cat.

Commercial cat foods

Commercial foods can also poison cats:

If a pet food manufacturer poisons cats due to negligence the cat's owner should be able to claim damages up to $10,000. This is not the case at present as cats are seen as chattels - items to possess like televisions.

Carpets and sofas

Yes, carpet protecting chemicals impregnated in carpets and fire-retardant chemicals in some furniture are both potentially poisonous to cats. Beware of them. They are a hidden and insidious danger.

Antifreeze

Car antifreeze is a cat poison. It is probably one of the most common cat poisons. There is a spate of poisonings in Weston-super-Mare, UK, at the date of this post. All seem to have died from eating/drinking antifreeze. This has all the signs of being deliberate (but may be due to carelessness). Some people hate cats. A substantial number do in fact. A fair number of people search for the keyword "cat poison". That implies that some people are possibly thinking about poisoning cats. And some are trying to work out what might have poisoned their cat. Note: Go immediately to the vet if you suspect poisoning as speed can save lives.

Hydrogen peroxide can be used as instructed by your vet to make your cat vomit if she has been very recently poisoned by antifreeze.

Important: It is a crime to poison a cat deliberately. This is cruel indefensible behavior. In the UK, the Animal Welfare Act 2006 applies. It states that a person found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal shall face a maximum six-month prison sentence plus a £20,000 fine. My message to anyone contemplating it is to stop and think, why? There is no good reason to do. It is pure cruelty. Ask yourself what is driving you to think in that way. If you are able to do this honestly you will realise that the motivation to harm should be directed at someone else not the innocent cat. In which case help is needed. Please bear in mind that responsibly for a cat lies with a person. If you are incensed by a cat's behavior ask if the cause is an irresponsible cat owner. It will always prove to be the case. In which case leave the cat alone and talk with the person instead. The cat is a victim of our behavior.

To all those people in the USA thinking about poisoning a cat, the laws are often very similar to the UK and animal cruelty is a crime in the USA as well. Punishment varies from state to state but can be as severe as here in the UK. See Cat Cruelty Laws in the USA (this link opens in a new window).

Important: A visitor has left a comment saying he has killed 14 domestic cats (about 30 comments down). He lives in Australia (surprise). He is almost certainly committing serious crimes. Please read the comment and if you know who he is please tell me by leaving a comment. I will then inform the police and local RSPCA.

For those few who are planning poisoning: why do people plan malicious cruelty to cats? I seems that they are bored, unable to cope, angry, damaged individuals who strike out against the world and in doing so pick on a vulnerable creature, a companion animal that provides a lot of comfort and pleasure to a lot of people.

The poisoned cats are domestic cats. Yet a lot of cat keepers are irresponsible in letting their cats roam widely risking injury and yes poisoning by ill people.

It is a combination of events. Cat poison is used by ill and bad people against cats that are sometimes poorly looked after. The best immediate solution is to keep cats in or under control and supervision plus to find out where the anti-freeze is or was (if this is caused by anti-freeze) and do some work on investigating the matter ourselves. We cannot rely on the police in this country. They don't even bother to investigate many crimes against people (e.g. burglary) and those against cats are going to be low priority. Some plants are cat poison: see House Plants Poisonous to a Cat (which contains pictures) and/or Plants Poisonous to Cats for a fuller list.

Cat poison - Update 9th Oct 2008 on antifreeze poisoning: if this is not an act of maliciousness (and I shouldn't presume that it is) then it could be carelessness but I find this a little hard to believe but perhaps I am being cynical. Apparently this last spate of cat poisonings may be due to people topping up their cars with anti-freeze and spilling some. It also means that cats are drawn to antifeeze. The number of cats that have been poisoned indicates that this is deliberate, however, and that the anti-freeze was in more than one place. Also you don't need to put antifreeze in modern cars. The water coolant rarely if ever needs topping up and has antifreeze in it from purchase. Antifreeze is ethylene glycol and it causes acute kidney disease.

Other cat poisons and what to look out for and do

Cats are by nature curious and are liable, therefore, to ingest something poisonous and it is often not clear what it is as it might not be nearby. If the poison can be identified it will obviously help to decide treatment.

The first and most important step is most likely to be to make your cat vomit (although this is not always the case). How to make a cat vomit is mentioned below. What appears to be an excellent advice service in the United States called the Animal Poison Control Center(new window) run by ASPCA tel (888) 426-4435 that I would have thought would be the first thing to do after trying to make your cat vomit (if sure that this is the right thing).

Fungi

One fungi that is not that uncommonly seen in badly managed homes that are poorly ventilated and damp might be black mold or toxic black mold. This is: stachybottys chartarum (also known as S. atra) is known as "black mold" or "toxic black mold," and is frequently associated with poor indoor air quality that arises after fungal growth on water-damaged building materials. It is known to produce trichothecene mycotoxins including satratoxins.

Stachybotrys is a genus of molds, or asexually-reproducing, filamentous fungi. Closely related to the genus Memnoniella, most Stachybotrys species inhabit materials rich in cellulose. (Verbatim from Wikipedia as allowed under license).

Rodent Poisons

Strychnine: Rat, mouse, mole poison and coyote bait contains strychnine. In America it can be bought as a purple, green or red dyed pellet. Symptoms appear within 2 hours:
  • Agitation, apprehension
  • seizures lasting about 60 seconds (in contrast, epileptic seizures last about 3 minutes)
  • cat throws head back, turns blue because it can't breathe
  • small stimulus such as noise causes a seizure
Inducing vomiting should not happen is breathing is laboured (src: Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook). Take cat (covered with coat to protect from stimulus) to vet immediately.

Sodium Fluoroacetate: It is mixed with rat feeds. Very poisonous. Signs are sudden and include vomiting, agitation, staggering walk, convulsions, collapse. Induce vomiting. Take to vet for antidote.

Zinc Phosphide: Signs are laboured breathing, vomiting (blood), convulsions. No antidote.

Cat poison - update 9th October 2008: looking back on the massive pet food recall in the USA in 2007 it seems that the cause was a chemical called melamine that was added to wheat gluten that in turn is added to cat food to thicken the gravy. China recently went through a scandal about baby milk poisoning babies because it contained melamine. Apparently it adds protein to the product. It is also a human and cat poison. The cats poisoned suffered acute kidney disease. The wheat gluten was imported from China but I don't know if it originated in China. As far as I am aware the baby food products and the added melamine originated in China.

Wheat gluten is a meat substitute as it looks like meat. It is meat for vegetarians. Cats are obligate carnivores so I have no idea why it is in cat food. But then again lots of cat food is not meat or anything remotely like meat. If it was it would make it too expensive. I think cat food is too cheap. If it was more expensive it would be genuine cat food and the price might deter irresponsible cat keepers. See a lot more on melamine in cat food.

Cat poison - Update 21st October: Regarding the pet food poisoning referred to above, it would seem that damages have been agreed at $24 million. I suppose the USA pet food suppliers paid this and will try and sue the China suppliers of the poisoned ingredient for indemnity. Anyway, what is interesting about this is that the damages are for economic loss only. That is compensation for veterinarian bills, time spent away from work and property damage. The average claim is worth $1,500. There is no compensation for the greatest loss, the loss of ones dearly loved cat. This is called pain and suffering and is part of a claim in an action for injury arising out of negligence, for example, if one is suing on behalf of a person.

As I understand it the damages are limited to economic loss because a cat is considered a "chattel", an object considered no different to, for example, a washing machine. The law needs updating. This happens.

Update 3rd April 2009: Another case of cat poison being either carelessly left about (highly unlikely) or put out deliberately (far more likely, in my view). This latest incident happened in north Wales and Shropshire, UK. Three cats have died. The generous RSPCA inspector said that he wasn't sure if it was malicious or deliberate. But how often do we see antifreeze left lying around these days? Modern cars do not need antifreeze to be changed or renewed. This has almost got to be deliberate and as usual I am concerned that not enough effort is being made to catch the perpetrator or to investigate the matter. I wonder how many criminals actually get caught for poisoning or injuring cats? Very very few, I am sure.

Cat Poison Update 8-07-09: This is an imaginative way to poison a cat and commit a crime, cover the cat in motor oil and grease and wait to see if the cat tries to lick it off. This happened to two cats in Mattapan, Boston, USA. Fortunately, someone saw and rescued them. They were taken to the local MSPCA in Boston and washed clean. Never consider using cat poison. It is morally very wrong and a serious crime. Here is a street view of Mattapan:

Map no longer works - sorry.

Something more positive for a change. The treatment for poisoning from antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is to induce vomiting and get to the vet as soon as possible. This has to be done quickly. The signs of toxicity, which happen suddenly are vomiting a walk that looks as if the cat is drunk, weakness, stupor and eventually coma. According to the Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook you can induce vomiting by giving "hydrogen peroxide 3 percent: one teaspoon per 5 pounds of body weight (up to 3 teaspoons per dose) every 10 minutes or until the cat vomits This can be repeated 3 only 3 times. I would ask you vet about this and keep some in safe storage as inducing vomiting is often (but not always) the first and immediate step.

Cat Poison Update 29-8-09: In Wales, UK (see map below) a person seems to be poisoning cats with antifreeze. 8 cats have been put down with kidney failure the sign of anti-freeze poisoning. As it is summer there is no need to be dealing with anti-freeze right now so this seems like deliberate poisoning but tests are still being carried out. Anyone in the area with suspicions should please contact the police and/or RSPCA as soon as possible.

Cat Poison update 9th May 2010: Someone or persons are poisoning cats with antifreeze in the north Sheffield suburb of Walkley. More than 11 cats have been poisoned. It is said that someone is putting down cheap dry food laced with antifreeze. The food is shaped as bite sized stars and fish.

You know that there are many poisons (more than 213) that a cat can encounter naturally by which I mean poisons not put down by humans with the deliberate intention of killing cats. I have a page on these poisons which you can read by clicking here. It is a list, no more.

The deliberate poisoning of outside cats proceeds unabated. It has done over many years. It is as if the perpetrators are untouchable as I never read about them being prosecuted and punished.

Antifreeze should and could be manufactured so that it is not poisonous. Read this article: Making Antifreeze Unpalatable to Cats.

  1. I don't like cats at the best of times, but even less when they relieve themselves at the front of my house. If there wasn't fear of prosecution, I would poison them today.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Hi, thanks for the comment. I understand your feelings. But the animal that you should strike out at is the irresponsible cat owner who allowed this to happen. Why punish a natural act by an innocent animal?

    ReplyDelete
  3. You make a valid point - although there are so many cats in my neighbourhood that trying to track its owner would be impossible!

Of course I am not going to poison a cat...it is a practical solution I think, but not advisable and another cat would only come along and do the same thing. I just think in this respect they are like vermin - when their owners let them out into the neighbourhood they know they will do this. Dogs on the other hand...not so - when a dog does doodies, good owners pick it up!

Maybe cats need leashes and supervision?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hi, yes, I tend to agree. There are arguments going around for leash laws for cats and/or registration. In other words forms of control as people cannot be left to do it themselves. The trouble in enforcement.

  5. I have a small female cat and have a cat flap which she uses. There is a large black male cat who comes into my house every day / night, bullies my cat and worst of all it PISSES in my house. My cat is neutered so its no coming in for sex.

I cannot get near this cat to throw water on it - the bugger is too clever for me in making it's escape. I am at my wits end and have thought about poisining this little bastard to make it sick. If you have any other suggestions - I would be glad to hear them.

  6. HI, thanks for the comment. I can understand. I have two strays that come in. As you can tell I would never advocate cruelty and anyway it is a crime under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 if you are in the UK. There is similar legislation in America.

But it is unfair that an unneutered (probably) male cat should terrorize your sweet girl cat, probably eat some of her food, piss on the place (this is a territorial marker - he thinks your home is his territory) and then pisses off.

These possibles come to mind, both not that good. He sounds like a stray cat but could be a "time-share" cat (likes to have several owners). If he is stray he could be trapped and taken to a shelter. But this is time consuming and troublesome. He would be re-homed or euthanized (legally). Another possible would be an electromagnetic cat flap (Google that term and you'll see them). These are designed to deal with the problem you have. Another possibility is to make your cat an indoor cat with an outside enclose. Once again this would entail a change in lifestyle and some expense but not that much.

If you can get near enough to the cat you could put a collar on him with a note asking the owner to claim him and to take charge of the problem for you. The responsibility to resolve the problem rests with the "owner".

All these are troublesome but legal and the best I can think of for the moment. One last unacceptable answer: make friends with him. That may stop him spraying and he will eventually stop terrorizing your cat. He may be spraying to assert his authority over the territory which he needs to do as a result of your actions. But he may be a complete bastard of a cat. It all depends.

  7. I hate ALL cats apart from the biggies like lions n tigers. Those dont SHIT in UR GARDEN! I really wish i could poison ALL the little fucking bastards!!!!! If I was PM I'd tear up the cat section in the animal welfare act and mass kill via army all the little rodent vermin bastards!

    ReplyDelete
  8. To the last comment: I respect your opinion of course. But I think you should ask why you want to kill them all just because one or two shit on your garden. If they do this it is not the fault of the cat as this is natural; it is the fault of the human person who "owns" the cat(s). Maybe you should vent your rage against him or her. And perhaps at the same time go on an anger management course!

  9. three months ago, this was a quiet neighborhood. then my misguided neighbor started putting out food for every cat within a 10 block area to come and eat. Now there are no more songbirds left (driven out and/or killed by cats) and our potted plants all dug up and shitted and pissed on as well as the gardens and yowling and fighting at all hours of the night.

And of course, they breed breed breed. At it's peak there were about two dozen cats hanging about. I say at it's peak because a week ago I began putting out my own little dish IN MY GARAGE every night. There may have been antifreeze in it. All I know is that things are back to normal.

Not once did I leave the boundaries of my property to do this. Indeed, the food was located in my carport. Whatever, no more cat shit in my carport to clean up.

If cat lovers can't or won't take care of their pets then more drastic measures need to be taken.

And I'm not bothering with cages and multi-trips across town to the
euthanasia center..excuse me.."animal shelter" to deal with this any more.

  12. I hate cats. I was walking my dog yesterday and she stuck her head into some bushes and she was SCRATCHED BY A CAT. It got the top of her head, the side of her muzzle, and there's a 1cm gash right under her EYE. Screw feeling sympathetic. If owners can't keep their cats confined somewhere where they they are not a niussence, then they deserve to be poisoned. In fact I'm thinking of mixing some antifreeze with catfood to kill the cat who mauled my dog.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hi, thanks for your comment. The cat was simply defending itself. You cannot blame and hurt the cat. It could be argued that it was your fault as you were responsible for your dog at that moment. You can't blame the dog either. It is our fault so if you want to strike out at something do it against a person.

  14. A stray/feral cat just killed my 2 pet cats within a week; the first one looked like a natural death and he was old so I thought nothing of it. This morning I wake up to find my other cat decapitated!

Im starting to wish that guns are legal in my country...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks for the comment. Are you sure that your cats were attacked by another cat? A cat would not decapitate another cat. It would have to be a much bigger animal. If you are in the States it could be Coyotes.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Im sure its a cat - cat droppings at the scene that did not belong, and im in the middle of busy suburbia, where is a coyote going to come from? Cats can get feral... this one will be put down with prejudice.

My cat is small, I've seen the feral cat once straddling my fence and its quite large. The only other explanation is punk kids jumped into my backyard at night and did this and the stray cat came afterwards and played around with the body. My cat however doesnt like strangers so it wont just let anybody pick her up.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hi, I understand what your saying. I just don't see any cat of a similar size decapitating another cat. I don't actually see any feral cat killing another cat. Cats avoid each other if possible as it good survival technique. There is easier prey for a feral cat, rodents etc. It is more likely humans (as you suggested) or larger animals. A lot of people dislike cats and to decapitate indicates maliciousness born out of hatred.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I can't understand all the comments from people who say it's a "natural act" when talking about cat's excreting where they like when they like. It might be "natural" in the sense that it's a necessary bodily function, but, in this world it's survival of the fittest. So, if dog owners have to keep they're pets leashed and properly controlled so should cat owners. Just allowing them to roam and not expect them to get hurt is ridiculous. If I had a domestic hippopotomous and it mauled your cat, then by your logic, this is just a "natural act". If I just so happen to have a bowl of antifreeze laid out in my garden, then that too could be described as a "natural" act. I'm not going to make my garden a cat safe zone, it's up to the owners to keep them safe. It's unfair that they should be allowed to roam freely and do as they please.

I'm not going to maliciously go out of my way to hurt a cat, but, by the same token, if a cat wanders into my garage uninvited(which they do) and ingests something it shouldn't, then i won't lose any sleep over it, as it ain't my fricking responsibility to ensure the safety of someone elses pet.

Bottom line, if you want your cat to be safe, look after it yourself, there are a lot of sick fucks out there who would love to those annoying bastards eaten from the inside out by ***insert poison here***

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi, I agree with you in that the responsibility lies with us, people to ensure our cats are safe and that they do not irritate other people. But if people are irresponsible do we punish the cat (by hurting the cat) or do we punish the people?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Interesting point, but responsibility must lie with the owner surely?! And therefore, punishment should lie firmly on the owners shoulders.

If an animal is prone to ingest ANYTHING at all because it knows no difference (say, between anti-freeze and water) then the owners are the foolish ones for letting them roam free and blissfully unaware of the dangers in the big ba world. We keep a tight leash on our chldren for their own safety(I hope!) so why not our animals?!

Responsibility and culpability are with the owner, because the cat knows no better and it's the non-cat owner who has NO responsibility to cat proofing their world.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, responsibility lies with the people, the owner. This is what I meant. Therefore if punishment for any irritation is due it should be directed at the person (the human) not the cat. If we put poison down we are punishing the cat and, yes, the responsibility for injury to the cat ultimately rests with the owner of the cat and secondarily with the person administering the poison. The person who puts down poison has committed a serious criminal offense and will probably be imprisoned on conviction. The irresponsible owner has simply committed a moral wrong but no crime.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hmmm, I accept what your saying, but thats assuming that a cat has been maliciously poisoned. In that instance, then the poisoner is much more to blame then the owner, however, if it's not malicious, then it's all down to the owner. 100%.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi, Thanks for the comment. We agree. It is nice to get to agreement.

    ReplyDelete
  24. In the UK it would appear that cats are an introduced predator. To me the natural wildlife is of far greater importance than the domestic cat. Laws protecting cats were originally formulated in the 20's. The UK domestic cat population now exceeds 9 million and whilst I would never poison any animal, I dearly wish that the law would make cat owners responsible for the actions of their pets. And if I don't want next doors cat in my garden , I should have that right. Most cat owners that i know don't give a fig about the natural environment and just want a pet that requires minimal work and are happy to excuse the anti social actions of their pet with the banal statement "but thats what cats do"
    Best regards

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, that is probably correct. In reference to the title of the article that is a supporting argument for not poisoning a cat. Thanks for the comment. It is the irresponsible people who need to be punished and/or educated.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I am a first time owner of a rescue kitten. He is now 8 months old. We adore him, he has a wonderful personality and makes us happy every single day. He is an indoor only cat due to a few reasons;
    1. He has a pink nose and here in Australia you have to protect against the sun as much as possible, 2. We do not want him terrorising the wild birds who we and he love to listen to, 3. We do not want him running under a car and being killed,
    4. We do not want him becoming a nuisance to neighbours, other cat owners, or keen gardeners.
I feel we are responsible cat owners.
We have a harness and leash for him which we use to take him for walks in our garden every day after the sun has gone down. This way he gets outside time everyday, which he loves, and we can control where he goes and what he does.
Perhaps we need to start changing the way that we care for our cats and care for them like we do our dogs. They are our pets and very precious to us. We wouldn't let our dogs roam the streets, why should we let our cats. By being responsible in this way, our cats wouldn’t upset people and less time would be spent on talking about evil things like poisoning other living things.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi, My response to the last comment. Thanks for a wise comment. I think in days gone by we could and did let cats roam away from our homes. It was completely normal in the UK and probably across most of the world. But times have changed with higher human and cat populations which can cause friction and does result in more cases of irresponsible ownership. I think the modern way to care for a cat is as you describe, full time indoors but ideally with a large enclosure outside. That is an ideal and if we all did that (or not have a cat) there would be no "cat problems" whatsoever.

  28. I've recently been keeping a kitten, which is about 3 months old. Since then it has been attacked (and at one time nearly killed) by a stray cat {male cat i suspect). Twice i've had to administer antibiotics. The stray cat visits us every night and however much i try to scare it away or throw something at it it just keeps on coming back to haunt my poor little kitten. I hate to do this but it seems i'm left with little choice but to poison the feline invader. If there's anyone who has a better idea on how to tackle this problem i'd love to hear it. And please don't ask me to wait everynight to devise something to trap the bastard, i'm a very busy person.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hi, response to last comment (thanks for the comment). Well first it will be a crime. Second you may poison the wrong cat. Third the stray cat has just as much right to live as your cat.

Would it be possible to make your cat an indoor cat and keep the stray out? I presume it is coming inside. Why is the stray turning up? For food through a cat flap? If you keep the stray away long enough by shutting the cat flap, it might go elsewhere and in the meanwhile your kitten will become an adult and probably see the stray off all being well.

The stray is not coming around to attack your kitten. The kitten just happens to be there. It is coming for food it seems.

  31. I choose not to have a cat (or dog) because I have children and want a clean home AND garden.

I am sick to seath of finding shit in my garden from cats.

Its OK blaming owners of cats however, you cannot train a cat like you can a dog. A cat IS a wild animal by nature and should be banned from being pets.

I don't give a shit about laws. If I find an intruder on my land - two legs or four - it or they will be 'dismissed'.

Cat owners know full well when they own a cat that they will be letting it out in the evenings to shit everywhere and anywhere except their own back yard.

I place cat owners on the same selfish level as smokers - who also like inflicting their 'shit' (smoke) on others.

  32. To Sabrina....

Why the hell should I spend money on cat repellents? How about (you) cat owners being forced by law to pay for deterrents to their neighbours (upto 7 doors either side of their own)?

Then we might get a bit of peace to which you refer. The fact remains that 99% of cat owners are selfish and couldn't give a toss about their neighbours. THAT IS A FACT and the truth hurts.

I have started putting the cat shit on the doorstep of the person I believe to be causing most of us distress in this street. They have no less than THREE wretched cats.

Let him clear it up and see how we feel about doing it on a daily basis.

And just watch all the cat sympathisers here call me 'disgusting'.
    Yes, precisely, isn't it just.

  33. Hi,
Yet again i have gone to cut my lawn and had to pick up cat turds from my next door neighbours 3 cats,I had 2 whole nappy bag full after only doing it the day before yesterday,My 2 yr old boy came in from my garden with a hand full of shit saying ewww mummy phwoar....I am so pissed off with it now, they spray up my back door and all my sons clothes,I left clothes on the clothes horse drying and they pissed all up them, which i may add were my newborn babies clothes on them.

They sit on our car which is now scrathed and just cost us a thousand pund to get resprayed and the also scratch at our tyres, ive had a word with my neighbour about keeping them in,My brother has an air rifle so im seriously considering either poisoning them or shooting them,Im at my wits end.
they have my rubish out all the time, all they do is scream and shag all times of the day and night. What else can i do,Ive spent a fortune on cat repelents which dont work.I cant even have flower beds and pots no more coz all they do is dig and shit in them :(

  34. Please resist hurting the cats. It is not their fault. And if you kill them what is stopping your irresponsible neighbour getting more cats or he might call the police. Remember, you will be committing a crime that is punishable by a fine of £20,000 and/or 51 weeks in prison (a max.)in the UK. You sound English. Are you in the UK? The law is similar in the USA and other European countries (old Europe that is).

You will lose the high ground. Get the neighbor but not with a rifle!

Are you in a leasehold property? If you are you could sue under the lease, no question. Freehold is harder but please answer this question.

  35. I am in Australia and it seems we have the same trouble here you have everywhere else. I have been troubled greatly in the past by cats pooping in my potted plants, my garden and spraying their vile smelling odour on my front door. This is what I do. I have an RSPCA approved live cat trap that I only put out during the hours of darkness. When I catch a cat (all have had collars so far) I attach an anonymous note written in permanent marker on a plastic tab to its collar telling the owner I am sick of it in my yard etc etc and if I catch it again I will kill it. In the past 3 years that I have been at this house I have killed 14 cats. Dont like it? Sue me!!!!

  36. To the person who made the last comment: It is possible that your neighbours know you who you are, meaning the person who leaves notes on cats. And it is also possible that one of those people will visit this site and webpage. It is also possible that the RSPCA know who you are.

On the basis that we can find you we have an admission from you that you have probably committed a crime and I will personally do my best to see you punished to the maximum for it.

Message to all visitors: If you recognise this obnoxious person please leave a message saying exactly where you are and I will then file a complaint to the local police and RSPCA.

  37. Simple solution - keep your stinking cats out of other peoples homes. I gave them all one warning, if the owners are too stupid to heed it thats their problem. All cats were quickly euthanased - a bullet in the back of the head does that. Shame you cant do the same to the inconsiderate owners who have no respect for the rights of others. And FYI, my tally of catches in a bit over 3 years is 41 with only 14 repeat offenders so a lot of people got the message. Rarely see a cat around my place now so at least my method works which is a hellava lot better success rate than your posturing.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I would be almost certain that you stink a hell of a lot more than any cat and I would love to see you put away. Maybe the police know about you and accept it! People like you disgust me. The problem is not the cat you horrible person but the people. Why don't you deal with that properly and decently? I guess dealing the problem (any problem) properly and decently is beyond you. People like you make the world a lot worse.

  39. You know I really sympathise with the chap from Australia. I know how impossible it is to get cat (and some dog for that matter)owners to ensure their animals arent a nuisance to others. I am terribly frustrated where I live with the antics of other peoples cats. I have done letterbox drops of messages all around my home but there has been no improvement. The Police just laugh at me. The RSPCA give me all sorts of suggestions like pepper etc but this only inconveniences my 2 cats and has little or no effect anyway. And after all, why should it be up to me? At least the fellow from Australia gives the owners of the nuisance animals a fair warning and lets face it, if they ignore the warning (seems that a large percentage do "get the message" though) and lose their cat they probably werent fit to have a pet anyway. So, in summary - while I would not take the action he has I can understand why he does what he chooses to do.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I personally think the Aussie chap has the right idea.
I live just out of Central London and the neighbors cats are forever defecating all around my House. Because of this my attitude toward all cats has changed to - The only good Cat, is a Half Dead and Dieing Cat!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. In the state of South Australia it is a crime and ill treatment of an animal carries a maximum penalty of $20,000 or four years imprisonment. It is no good saying you sympathise. If you hurt cats you do nothing to resolve the problem and hurt an innocent animal.

It is simply uncivilized to do what you suggest and what this moron does. If someone comes forward I will see to it that he is investigated. Of course he could well be a policeman! Probably is. It is the kind of thing that someone in the police force would do.

  42. Notice how 'Freddie Fox' only constructive answer is threatening people with the law.

Nobody will be able to prove whose doing it anyway.

How many times do you see notices pinned on lamp-posts; 'Missing Cat'???? They are not missing, they have been soundly removed from the neighbourhood.

At the end of the day, there is not another hated animal than the bog-standard moggy - and it all comes down to garden mess.

The RSPCA, Cats Protection League, etc. need to clean up their act and tell owners that their cat is 'at risk' if you don't control it.

The new sling (CATapult) with night-site is working a treat!

    Here, kitty-kitty!

  43. HI! I am from Portugal and I will kill the cat in my backyard! The cat have destroyed my crops and is very noisy! Perhaps with paracetamol, which was i have seen on the web! I tried so far, poison for rats and cockroaches but failed! The repellents are not too! Tomorrow I will see if this fing have worked to finally return to my quiet! If it is forbidden to kill animals is also forbidden invasion of property and also i have the right to rest at home and can sleep a peaceful night! Goodbye!

  44. Hello People, Aussie "chap" here again. Y'know, I really dont WANT to kill peoples pets. I would much rather the owners ensured the cats were properly taken care of so that they would not be a nuisance to others - as someone else so correctly put it, it is not up to us to cat proof our properties. Now, Im sure most here are people just like that and I have no argument with you, its the irresponsible element I have no time for. And now that I have removed the nuisance animals from the area I am quite happy and dont expect to deploy my trap for a while or until another nuisance cat appears. Also, I cant let Freddie (Michael?) Fox's comments go unchallenged either. To slur the Police as he did, stating I was probably a policeman because it was the sort of thing they do is quite stupid. No more stupid or insulting than me saying that because Freddie is a middle aged male cat owner he must be a raging pillowbiter - see how silly my comment is? Well, no more than his. And I am not a cop for what that is worth. And to set the record even straighter Freddy - I have not killed 41 cats as your headline so erroneously stated, I have killed 14. I have CAUGHT 41 - remember I wrote and attached nasty notes to their owners to their collars and released them? The 14 were "second time offenders" - so at least 27 owners woke up to themselves.

All in all it seems this is a very emotive issue. I invite you to enjoy your pets all you like and you may do so with my best wishes. Its only when your inconsideration impacts on my enjoyment of my property that I will not tolerate it and WILL take the action I have!

    Cheers

  46. We live in the Midlands and our 2 cats are either indoors or when outside are in a purpose built run. Our very young children cant play in their sandpit though until my wife or I sift it for cat turds. I got a cat trap and caught the offenders one by one. I would hide them in the shrubbery beside the garden shed and hose them down a dozen or so times over the course of a day. Then I would douse them in pepper while still wet and let them go in the early eveing when hopefully their owners would be home to see them (actually I now wish I had thought of our "Ozzie Mates" caper of sticking a nasty note on the collar - the owners really need a reality check!) and you should see how fast they go! Unfortunately a couple didnt learn and returned after a time (not real smart are they?) so some anti freeze in the garden shed took care of that problem. Sorry if that offends.

  47. Hi! I have a problem with two un-neutered Tom cats. They Killed our young female cat, who was a totally non aggressive animal, a short while ago, tore her throat out. Now they are coming back and trying the same thing on my other cats. Trapping doesn't work as, A. it's illegal, and B. these cats work as a pair and are too canny to enter a trap( I've tried). I have contacted animal control in my area and their policy seems to be, No policy. They will not do Anything about these cats, except send a council vehicle around to drive around and look for them during the day. No traps, No baits, and a day time drive by is useless as these cats only emerge late at night. I may be speaking from emotion, but I do not want any other of my animals murdered by these vicious mongrels. I saw them attempting to kill a cat across the road the other day also. So I'm sorry all of you as I also am an animal lover, but these cats ARE going to die! Poison is proberbly the best method, although I do not wish to harm any other animals. I would smash their heads in if I could get close enough. Sorry if I offend anyone's sensibilities, if anyone has any other suggestions please tell me. Otherwise I will have to take care of this in the most efficient manner I can. Anon

  49. I live in Birmingham and I have made it my lifes mission to rid the earth of as many of these vile animals as possible. I have 2 traps but I cant shoot them like our Aussie mate as I dont have a gun (would be a bit risky firing a gun at my place anyway) so I put a box over the trap and gas the sodding animals with my car exhaust in the garage. I have found that you MUST use a stone cold engine though as a warm engine does not produce enough carbon monoxide - something to do with the catalytic converter apparently. Only takes a minute or two and it is quite effective. I am not nearly "up there" with your total Oz but I havent been going for very long either. Hey Mate - wanna have a contest - bet I can get more by Christmas than you? On your honour mate - no cheating with numbers OK? Losers sends the winner a six pack of his choice - if I win I want a six pack of Boags Premium Lager. Drank a lot of that when I was over there a few years ago - best beer in the world. How about it mate? Phil.

  50. In the uk cats kill over 50,000,000
of our native songbirds every twelve months. No surprise then that our bird population is in decline. You can't call yourself an animal lover if you allow your cat to roam freely.

  51. Fantastic blog. I don't own any pets but get plagued by the neighbours cats (and very very occasionally, dogs), but mostly just cats.
My current count is about 3 turds a week on my lawns (I vote for a measure we can use - turds-per-week - so I have 3 tpw) but it used to be about 10 tpw. I got fed up with it, especially when I went to take my bins out at **night** a few months ago and stood in a lot then BROUGHT IT BACK WET AND STINKING INTO THE HOUSE ON MY SHOE AND NEARLY ONTO MY **NEWLY FITTED** (I KID YOU NOT) CARPETS. Fortunately it only ruined my 1 day old outside front and inner door mats, (£10), which required I dispose of them and the brush I needed to get it off my shoes (about £2.50). Now I just scoop the turds with a spade whenever I see them and dump it in the gardens of the cat owners whose cats I know wander my gardens (and who I've seen doing it). I KNOW their kids have trodden in it at least once AND HAVE ALSO BROUGHT IT INTO THEIR HOUSE (hohoho you should have heard the mother's blue language!), so satisfying and I feel I have got my £12.50 back - kids are great! I could never poison a cat as some have suggested, I can see why some people do, because I've had even worse experiences... at a house I used to live at my previous gf had a *magnetic* cat flap fitted for her cat. On Xmas Eve when the roast was being defrosted and prepared overnight a neighbourhood cat broke in through the flap (breaking the magnetic lock in the process - so used some force), pulled the blood stained red meat off the plate on the counter (it was wrapped in string), dragged it across two blue carpets and abandoned it trying to lift it up to the height of the flap. There was no way the roast would have fitted anyway, it was bigger than a cat or the flap. I know it wasn't her cat since I caught the b*stard trying to lift it backwards out of the £20 magnetic cat flap it had broken, it f*ckin knew it was doing wrongand shouldn't have been in our house when it saw me - it gave me the "oh sh*t I've been caught" stare (you know the one) for a second to see what I'd do - then bolted. The damage to the carpet was mostly repairable, but not something you want to do on Christmas day, and then having to serve the family -both sets of parents- microwaved fish instead (since nowhere was open) for the Christmas meal... I was... annoyed and felt like I could throttle that cat on sight. Oh and finally - a cat(or cats?) have also decided recently to damage the bonnet of my new car by jumping off a nearby fence onto it and leaving scratch marks and the odd paw "ping" dent (its jet black). So yes, I have lots of reasons to be annoyed. Now if you want to quote law to me, quote something useful that I can use to sue the asses of these cat owners for (had it been a human) attempted theft, damage to private property, public indecency, and littering (or fouling), that won't be laughed at by the ever ineffectual UK police or UK "justice" system. People feel the need to hurt cats because the law doesn't help them, the victims. As a side note for other readers (if this is posted :) ) I keep my calm because I have to, I'm a 20 something and I have high blood pressure and have been told not to stress over "little things" so I've given up caring to an extent, and boy did it take a lot of work to get out of that mindset with cats! Just chill.... it isn't worth it! :)

  52. Hey, surely not? It cant possibly be ...... Pommy Phil from Birmingham, hates cats, was in Oz a few years ago, drinks Boags (worlds best beer!)..... wasnt the same Phil I shared a camp (and a Boags) with on the Coopers at Innamincka 2 years ago in Sept? Pommy Phil went on to the Birdsville Races? Was travelling with Simon and Tracey, brother and sister? Simon & Tracey went back to the UK late in 07. Tracey is back here now, says she is staying permanently. How one in a billion if you are the same Phil! Still, if not - sure Phil, lets see how many of the varmints we can get rid of. I have decided that any cat that is not on someones lounge chair is feral and should be removed from the gene pool. Start counting now OK? How many have you got by the way? Anyone else want a piece of this action? The more the merrier! Ed.

Great way to have fun on Saturday night after the rugby game on TV. Some of my videos and my IR sighting system is on uTube. I dont have a patent on it so if you want to copy it and plug a few varmints be my guest.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Agreed. I'm in Australia too... all my friends and outdoor areas smell like cat pee and they don't have cats. We have to buy citronella oil, 'off for dogs and cats' powder, pepper jars - for what? For owners that do not take responsibility of their pets? Hey it's in my back yard - and our patio and outdoor furniture constantly smells like cat piss. Owners do not take responsibilities - why? because they are not shitting nor peeing in their backyards! - but in ours.... Councils and police do not care for such petty matters. Pet owners need to take responsibility of their pets. For all the cat lovers out there - if you don't agree with the other anonymous comments below - what would YOU recommend for us to do? How much time and money should we spend on removing cat shit and cat piss from our backyard? Buying products for cat repellent? Printing and sending out letters in our area about stray cats? Go on put a figure on it. 2 hours and $10 per week? Once you have come up with that - go to your local council / governor / representative and ask them to create a subsidy from tax payers to fund the 'save the stray cats' so that every household can get a 'cat repellent' subsidy.... Tell me now who should be responsible?

  56. I love cats, they make great compost. Just bury them under you compost heap and they disappear after 2 months or so. My compost is just amazing in the veggie garden. Fantastic tomatoes. Funny thing is that I give the veggies to the neighbours who used to own the cats and they thank me for the fantastic fresh produce. How ironic.

Anyway, down to business, get a possum trap and a 200 litre drum (44 gallon), bait the trap with sardines or pilchards, catch the offending moggie and put the trap (including pussy) into your drum of water, then 5 minutes later you have a compost filler.

I cleaned out an entire suburb of cats (estimate about 100) in just 2 years, and fed the families of the previous owners with lovely fresh vegetables made with cat-compost.

Not cruelty, not mean, not nasty, not bad behaviour. just a sensible solution to an urban problem.

I kinda feel sorry for the cats, its not really their fault, I would actually prefer to bury the irresponsible owners instead, but that's 20 odd years in jail. So, im not going to do that. BUT the cats, Oooohhh look out, if it wanders through my backyard looking for somewhere to take a poop, heheh , its compost.

  58. I assist a gamekeeper on a small estate not far from where I live to keep pests under control. We go out lamping quite a bit during the off season and it is surprising how many cats we shoot. On this 1300 acre estate, not far from a large population centre and surrounded by many small "toy" estates we have shot and trapped between 80 and 140 cats a year over the last 11 years with the numbers increasing each year. Some are certainly feral, but a surprising number (more than half) have collars, even name/phone tags. All carcases are discretely disposed of naturally, and before you jump down my throat we cant tell what is feral and what is "domestic" until after it has been shot. Begs the question really "What is your cat doing out hunting far from home at night?" In addition to what we get lamping at night, the gamekeeper tells me it is quite normal for him to shoot a cat or two each week during the day when he is out checking on his poults. I think you people have no idea what a destructive animal an average cat is - even the most domesticated moggy still has the hunting instinct just below the surface, to come to the fore at every opportunity. And remember - EVERY feral cat we shoot came from the cats of some irresponsible owner/s. Britains rapidly declining smaller birds/wildlife is not thanking you - some of you who are so outraged should consider that next time someone on this blog outs themselves as a city based "exterminator". You may not like what they do but in the overall scheme of things, paradoxically, they are doing the environment a real service. And, by the way, this is not just a UK problem but worldwide. At least in the western world anyway, everywhere else particularly in Asia they simply eat them.

  59. Reading these comments is just amazing that people can pick and choose which animals they like, saying i hate cats because they kill other animals is unbelievable. You can't pick and choose which animal you like thats like me saying i'll shoot all your dogs because they chase cats.

Plus the fact the way you are willing to kill these animals should be done to you if you are found

    ReplyDelete
  60. One thing is killing an animal because it is a pest and so on,but to do so in such a way as to cause it pain, what can you say, none of you would like antifreeze slipping in your tea so if you are going to do this do it the none cruel way at least, and why not go and tell the owners!

    ReplyDelete
  61. This is a GREAT blog. Really appreciate the ideas here. I'm just a beginner, so far only three adult cats and a couple of newly born dropped in the garden. None of them were good swimmers.

Have you noticed there are two types of posts here?

    1. Intelligent and reasoned posts from cat haters offering valuable hints and tips.

    2. Moronic threatening posts from the "lovers", who repeat themselves over and over.

I think we can deduce that cats are owned by selfish morons with personality disorders, who strangely think their right to inflict cats on us takes precedent over our right to live in a cat free world.

Antifreeze eh? Just off to buy a bottle. Only problem is that I will not be able to chalk up definite kills.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Phil from Birmingham you are a genius! I borrowed a cat trap and caught the neighbours cat that has been such a nusiance for so long despite a few residents having words with the offending moronic owner. Anyway, I positioned a large cardboard box over the trap (with soon to be deceased resident inside) and strategically cut an exhaust pipe sized hole in the cardboard - slid the hole over the protruding pipe, started the car and wonder of wonders - we dont have an annoying cat around here anymore! I didnt have a compost heap either until now but thats another GREAT idea I got from this site! I wonder if the clown next door would like some tomatoes next spring? There is now quite a demand for my trap, wish they werent so expensive - perhaps we should start a "co-operative", buy in bulk and share the joy around? Thank you one and all.

  72. Catmattixxx 'I so dun wid dat catsheet'20 October 2009 at 02:22

I grew up with cats--I had over 50 of them, roaming free in the midwest of America--a regular 'cat nirvana', a cat Eden. I actually love cats, but I HATE cat shit--just like everyone else out there who lets their cats roam free, so they don't have to scoop it all up.

However, since I became an adult, i.e. "grew up" I realized a few things about our cute, cuddly little 'friends'
    1) they kill song birds, and sparrows proliferate; they kill wild game twice their size, and leave it lay--seldom eating the whole kill.
    2) their shit is toxic--and only an experienced composter can compost it
    3) cat owners by and large are immature malcontents who hide their passive'aggressive tendencies and emotions in guise of animals that are entirely under their control
    4) they are NOT human-they are a parasitic mammal.
    and mostly:
As I research " cat poison" here in cyberspace, I realize that I am at my wits end dealing with your favorite cute cuddly non-emotive mammal shitting in my yard.

I MEAN, IF CATS ARE SO DARNED FUN, CUTE, HUMAN LIKE ETC--WHY DON'T YOU TRAIN THEM TO STOP SHITTING IN MY YARD? WHY DOESN'T YOUR BOOTSY/PATCHES'TIGGER/ETC. TRAIN ITSELF TO SHIT IN YOUR YARD?

BETTER YET, IF THE CAT OWNERS ARE HUMAN, WHY DON'T YOU FORM A COLLECTIVE CAT SHIT CLEANUP CREW?

I mean, it could be a non-profit agency--which fits the cat owner mindset so well--and then you could invest YOUR TIME in picking up those fresh stinkbombs that your cat is laying under my porch.

Maybe you guys can all get together and form a cat shit owners for social responsibility circle, and drum the turds away? Better yet, how about a new cat-shit collection tax--AND you PAY IT?

But I am sooooo done stepping in your cats shit--because you are too irresponsible to keep it indoors, or for that matter get the damned spraying bastards fixed.

And thanks for the tips about the poisons and anti-freeze! My little saucers go out tonight.

But you can betcha' my next cat will stay indoors--where it belongs, all nice and cute and spayed--so that MY SHIT doesn't become YOUR SHIT.

  73. Message to Philip Mitchell from Phil from Birmingham. Listen carefully you moron - I'll only use little words and type VERY slowly so you should be able to read this ...... I have only ever made ONE previous post. Got that Philip? So whoever you are going off your tiny brain at - it isnt me. You goose! And whoever it was said I must be laughing myself silly at poor Phillip Mitchell is right. You know what I think upsets idiots like Philip the most? - the fact that the cat haters of this world are efficiently going about removing vast numbers of nuisance cats from various places around the world and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. Hey Philip, where do you live, might come and introduce myself to your cat? Dont bother putting up "Lost Cat" posters on lamp posts :-) Phil.

  74. Brummie Philip Philip Philip do you know how incredibly hard you must be going on thinking your some kind of badman with your little saucers outside your door. the weird funny thing is i stumbled upon this blog so very randomly and got quite annoyed with what i read. however you must have had so much hatred for these animals you searched how to kill them. Come on my friend honestly have you nothing else to do. we all know who your sexing tonight handyman.

    ReplyDelete
  75. BTW, this isn't Philip--check the IP--this is another guy ouit here in the world who abhors cat shit on his shoes--tracked into my house, and possibly dispersing disease, because cat 'lovers' refuse to take the responsibility of keeping the cat shit indoors.

Believe it or not, as I said, the immature, cuddly wuddly me likes cats a whole lot. The responsible, practical adult says "fuck that" when it comes to stepping in shit.

As for 'sexing' anything, maybe you 'cat lovers' who refuse to get your 'lovers' spayed and neutered should reconsider serious adult things like:
    1) population density
    2) population density of cat lovers-vs- adults
3)population density of songbirds, and other wild game( which is infinitely more fascinating to watch than cats)+ catlovers = natural species decline = proliferation of mosquitoes, fly's, spiders, etc.
    4) growing up and taking responsibility, cleaning your cat shit, before I have to clean my neighborhood of excess cats.

  78. Hey catmatixxx so very true. The warm and fuzzy brigade are willing to let us have any opinion we like as long as it is the same as theirs. They seem to think when it comes to cat spray around our houses, crap in our pot plants and gardens and howling screeching fights outside our bedroom windows at night we should just put up with it because THEY love cats!! Selfish pricks one and all! Well, Im entitled NOT to have to suffer that and if the owners cant/wont take care of the problem they have no right to complain if we do. There is a very simple solution to this y'know - instead of them ranting at us, sort out the inconsiderate owners. They are the ones who cause this so get in their ear you sanctimonious righteous shits. Sort out the problem at the source and there is no reason for us to do what we do - or cant you get around something so simple? Too simple for their narrow minds to encompass I reckon. I am about to join you guys - catmattixxx, the Ozzie, Birmingham Phil, Dougall and the Portugese fella and you others who wish to stay anon and wont stand for it. I just ordered a trap and next week when it gets here I'll sort out my own problems thanks. I'll try the car exhaust method as I dont want them to suffer needlessly and I estimate I have about 4 problem cats to "relocate". Let you know as I get them. Michael.

I think they might just have the right to complain if your killing there pet. When you try the car exhaust method mate might you just be able to stick your ugly mug up it as well.Yeh and as you said sort out the owners instead go and knock on their MY door, but come on you fussy twat when a cat shits in your garden it burys it because in that department their very clean animals. I think all you guys philip, mikey, catimaxx, are all gettin mixed up with dogs. But yeh as you sugested go and complain to the owners you fussy little sperm cells. grab your bollox and do it then you might just get round the problem without breaking the law. But then again all you cat Haters all one minded think what you do is perfectly ok, or is it easier to dodge the human being who can stand up for themselves thought so.

  80. I so wish cat owners would look after their pets... cat owners are LAZY! they want a pet they don't need to look after and which will go off and do it's own thing. I am now contemplating killing a cat... it shits all over my vegetable patch, pisses all over my young children's toys and now has started getting into the house anyway it can!!! any scrap of food left and it's at it!!! just now my daughters finished their lunch.. I took them in the next room to get them ready for bed only to find the bloody thing had got in again and was licking plates and I have had to throw the food that was waiting for my husband as god knows who germs that pest has! I've tried hitting it with a brown but it's too fast for me....I've tried every other thing to get rid of it and it failed... Imade it perfectly clear it's not welcome but it still comes back... Cats don't belong in this country and CERTAINLY not at the level there are!! It's not natural!

  81. My trap arrived 2 days ago and claimed its first victim last night. Gassing with a stone cold car exhaust is so quick, they just ever so gently go to sleep and dont wake up. Much more preferable to antifreeze which must be distressing and painful. Remember people, just because the cat is a pain in the ass doesnt mean cruelty is an acceptable method of disposal. It's not a cats fault its a cat! I did a letterbox drop of notes all around my place advising there were a few problem cats around and they would be destroyed if their owners didnt take more responsibility for them. I also stuck a few posters up on light poles and what a hoo-hah that caused! Local TV even ran it so whoever owns the cat in the bottom of my garbage bin got a fair warning. And a message to the guy who gets SO upset at these methods (Philip Mitchell??) - I went to the owner of one nuisance cat a year ago and tried to be polite but he went mental. A month later my car got spray painted. So I choose to do it this way. Michael.

  82. Not a cat's fault it is a cat?Come on people, I love house cats, but I will exterminate strays in the same manner I would rats, mice, roaches, etc. Why? Because they are pests and not welcome on my property. They are filthy disease carrying vermin, and they multiply like jackrabbits. I am not obligated to spend my hard-earned money to dispose of them in a humane fashion. I don't hate them, but I do recognise a pestilence when I see one. I don't care how innocent you think the cat is. The cows, chicken, fish, baby sheep and deer that we eat are just as nnocent and NOT diseased filth. As a cat lover, you must be able to mentally separate those filthy vermin from your sweet kitty. They are not the same. All these people who are disgusted.... their house probably smells terrible and they sleep with fleas.

  83. Also, when they are entrenched under your house, put meat on a fishing pole with a treble hook, cast it under the house, and reel it slowly. When you feel a nibble, set that hook! When you drag them out, a baseball bat does the trick. VERY humane. They never learn either, if there are more, wait five minutes and recast, you will get the same results.

  84. Where do you buy a trap and can you tell me more about how you gas them?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Just google "cat traps" and you'll get heaps of hits no matter what country you are in. The best are wire, about 24"x12"x12" with a door that locks when it closes. Best by far are the ones with a "treadle" trigger mechanism. Cost about 40 pounds. Use sardines as bait and put them behind the treadle so the cat has to step on it to get at them. To gas - get a cardboard box that easily covers the whole trap. Seal any open seams with tape and put a brick on top of the box to hold it steady. Make a cardboard tube about 24" long that is a snug slide fit over your exhaust pipe. Cut a hole in the cardboard box the same diameter as the tube and slide it in. PLEASE!!! Use a STONE COLD ENGINE or you will cause the animal distress and you may not kill it humanely. Two minutes is all it takes - no struggles or thrashing about. They just go to sleep. If you want to give the obnoxious owner a second chance you could do what the Aussie fellow does and stick a nasty note to their collars warning the owners what will happen if you catch that particular cat again. Handle it gently and if you do see the same cat around ..... reset trap, it will be easy to catch a second time!

  86. You not have anything better to do with 40 quid?

    ReplyDelete
  87. what r u bitching about he could have spent the 40 quid on antifreeze couldnt he? wouldnt that be much more indescriminate and cruel than trapping and gasing individual troublesome moggys.

I found this site searching for a quick way to kill a pesky cat and thanks to your pathetic cat-loving, I now am equiped to rid the world of one less feline. 90. Why do cat owners always come out with the old "but they bury their mess" line?
    FALSE!
Cats DO NOT bury their shit. FACT.
I have a gravel driveway, and the cats just shit on it and don't make any attempt to bury their mess.

  91. Hey people Dougall from New Zealand here. Check my previous posting. I just got my 20th today, wondering how Birmingham Phil and Ozzie Ed are going? C'mon fellas dont be shy - I mean, neither of you can beat us at Rugby but surely you can get as many lousy cats as a wheelchair bound bloke in NZ shooting from a window with a 22 and a suppressor eh? And you know what? No one would be happier than me if you DO get more than me - means there are just that many less of them! Come on fellas, make my day!!

  92. I would just like to note that i am also an Aussie, I am very offended by the (surprise) comment, how dare you be so racist! I wouldn't go to the extreme of killing a cat but I do have to say any law over here in Aust is pathetic, there are rules but they are never followed through. For example 8 yrs for cold blood mumrder. My point is cats are rampant here,so many irresponsible owners. I have them pooping in my yard right in front of my dog and scratching my car. I was responsible and called the council, noted the houses and guess what? the cats still roam, the very next day after I received confirmation from the council so I can understand his frustration and that is why people are lead to this way of thought.I don't condone animal cruelty but I am now thinking of alternative ways to deter them cos the council or the cat law forbidding cats to roam it night don't mean squat!

    ReplyDelete
  93. You got a problem with cats? You have 2 choices - you put up with them or you kill them! Losing their cat and knowing WHY they lost it is the ONLY way to get through to the inconsiderate dirtbags who subject other peoples houses and yards to their uncontrolled pets. If there is a problem dog in your neighbourhood the council will pull out all stops to take care of it. But cats? No way - its too hard, so do it yourself - kill them and stick a note up on a lamp post nearby advising what you have done, the message will get around, take my word for it, I speak from experience!!

  94. It's not just the crap and urine deposits or the killing of many native birds and small mammals but also the damage to outdoor furniture and the garden. The cat is an introduced pet in Australia and, I hope, will be totally obliterated from the country. As for telling cat owners you have a problem; first thing is to try and identify the owner, secondly you have to convince them that the problem is their cat and then hope that something will be done. Hasn't happened in my case. I refuse to spend money on products to deter them (the cats)so I think open season is the best and quickest opyion.

Are they stupid enough to just eat rat bait or do I have to mix it with cat food?

  98. I have found that Baygon Surface Spray, a supposedly odourless insect surface spray, sprayed on puppy mix dog food is deadly on nuisance birds like Indian Mynahs and starlings. Kills VERY quickly. I am very careful to put this where only the nuisance birds can get at it as I dont want to kill any non target species. I have no idea if it will work on cats but dont see why it wouldnt. Perhaps some of us should give it a try and report back on this site? I am willing to give it a try as there are a few nuisance cats around my place (Brisbane, Australia).

  99. Would cat food laced with antifreeze work?
The dirty cats round here are not tempted by antifreeze in a saucer, (although i have noticed one of them hasn't been seen for a few days).

    ReplyDelete
  100. Found this by accident - love it! Didnt realise there were so many people like me - and "the family" (cat haters that is) is worldwide! Welcome brothers and sisters......
Now, I have no idea about anti-freeze but I can tell you how to get much better results with wire cat traps. Cats almost exclusively hunt by sight and the saying, "Curiosity killed the Cat" is very true. Set the trap in a sheltered spot, not exposed or out in the open. Along a fence, wall and near some bushes or structure that gives the cat some cover - they use stealth when hunting remember. Now, hang a small bunch of feathers (white is best, easier to see but any colour will work) within a yard or so of the trap. Ideally you will hang them about a yard off the ground on a yard of light string or fishing line. About 6 - 8" above the feathers you want a small fishing sinker so that in a breeze the feathers flick around on the end of the line. That is what attracts cats like a magnet. Stick a pilchard or sardine (fresh is best, I change baits daily) in the trap and it wont take long to rid your area of cats that are out and about when they shouldnt be. Wanna let the rest of the "family" know how you go? John, Penrith NSW.

  104. I have a cat at home. He is the terror of my life. His nickname is psyco kitty. I would never think about poising him and to top it off so no one else can hurt him he stays inside all the time. (Mainly because he doesnt have his front claws.) The problem I have is that there are a bunch of cats around that come to the windows and pester him and my dogs. Now my dogs have caught a couple of these cats and I feel sorry for there owners. I actually had one take me to court but when the cat was in my yard they had no case. So my question is I have tried trapping and talking with the people who own them. None of that has worked. I have taken it up with the local animal control and unless damage is being done besides the pee and poop everywhere, nothing can be done but trap. Is there any repelant out on the market that would work? I am an animal person all the way (MY cat and dogs sleep in the same bed as me.) so I do not want to see any harm come to these little ones. What would you suggest?

  106. If any liberal cat owner takes a look at this blog, then surely they must get the message that your neighbours are pissed off with your cat?

But no, they claim that we are cruel, coz we don't want THEIR cat mess in OUR gardens.

That in my book is the classic selfish individual.

I have no problems if my neighbour wants a ca - just don't let it come on my land.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I would have to agree with above. If you are a cat owner you have responsibilities just like a dog owner. If my dog got out you would call animal control for a vicious dog. The same goes with cats. Yes they are not a tamed as a dog but still need to live by the rules. Just take a moment and look at all the aspects, Cats do more of the terrorizing of animals, they think the world is there pisser and they dont give a damn who is around. The more cats that can be taken off the streets the better. Worst part is I am a cat owner and I am responsible. If my cat goes outside he is on a harness leash just like my dogs. Never goes out alone. So for those who just let there cats roam prepare for a dead cat. Take the responsiblity of being a cat owner and quite blaming it on "Natural instict" that is the biggest copout I have ever heard. Sad to say but my cars are even sick and tired of seeing the dirtbag cats everywhere.

Cat is disgusting animal anyway, so nobody complains in our neighbourhood.

  113. Wow! I had know idea this was such a wide spread issue. I do not own a cat, but quite like them. My problem with them began when I purchased a property and landscaped the back garden. I have spent £8000 plus on a place of sanctuary that I can sit in during my twilight years. I have no intention of harming any cat, but I have come to the end of three frustrting years of clearing up the turd of the local cats. I believe the cat should not be harmed, but I am now going to do something. I have come to the conclusion that they should be caught and driven 50 miles out and left to find a new litter tray where it doesn't affect my well being.

  115. Sorry to criticise but that is the worst thing you can do! If the cat survives it will kill more of our already endangered small birds and mammals and contribute to the ever growing feral cat problem in the UK. If the cat does not possess the skills to survive in the wild it will slowly starve to death! Either way both results are not very nice. If you cant put down nuisance cats yourself after you catch them, remove any collar and take it the RSPCA in a city 50 miles away - if you are prepared to take it 50 miles to dump it you can take it that far to hand it over. If it is chipped the owners have to travel 50 miles to collect it and may grow up a bit and look after it better - if it isnt the RSPCA will put it down within a few days anyway. Much better overall result.

  116. Hello, I think the person that started this blog probably had good intentions but they have unknowingly provided a site for people to learn how to kill cats.

If I were you Freddie Fox, I would delete this blog so no more people can learn. One person said they were looking on the net for a way to kill cats, and found your site. Delete it so no more can find it.

Cats are only made into problems by their problem owners who are oblivious and selfish to other people. It is a shame this blog is available and open to anyone, it has only attracted not so nice people on here. Delete it Freddie and stop people learning how to kill animals.

  118. Hi, I hope someone here can suggest a way to resolve my problem.

I have two young daughers (aged 1 and 3) who love to play in our small garden. They have a playhouse with a slide which stands on bark chippings, and enjoy "gardening" by digging over the surface of the large pot of an olive tree.

I'm guessing that the digging over of soil in the pot, and the crumbling of the chippings at the base of the slide are making those places particularly inviting to several of the neighbourhood cats, as each day there is between 1 and 3 cat turds there. Over winter it can be a few days between me going out and clearing it, over which time the catshit builds up, and the job is truly revolting. I have obvious concerns for my daughters health.

I have tried using coffee grounds, tea leaves and citrus peel, curry powder and growing curry plants. None of this has any effect.

I don't know who owns (if anyone) the cats that are doing this. It certainly seems to be more than one cat. A lot of the houses around us are rental properties with entirely paved gardens, so ours (the whole family like to enjoy our garden) must hold a particular attraction.

I am getting so depressed, tired and frustrated by the whole thing. I feel that my family's ability to take pleasure in the garden we've worked hard on, not to mention the health of my children, is utterly inconsequential in the face of the rights of other people's cats to come crap where they like.

With spring on the way I'm not prepared to keep my kids indoors so that our garden can serve as an animal toilet. I don't know what to do, but I'm feeling pretty desperate.

Why can't cat owners train their animals to use litter trays? Who do people think they are that their pets have more of a right to crap in my garden than my kids to to play there free of catshit?

    ReplyDelete
  119. You dont say where you are but where I live in Australia we can hire traps from the RSPCA. If you trap them and take them to the RSPCA they will put them down if they are feral (feral cats cant be turned into pets) or if they are chipped they will contact the owners. If the owners dont claim them (or no one else does) they will be put down after about a week. If they are indeed strays as seems likely just bait them. Im sure if you had cockroaches or mice invade your house you would have no qualms about putting out baits would you? So if these things are being a pain and the woners dont care why should you?

    ReplyDelete
  120. How sick all you people are . Cats are animals - creatures of this earth like any other. If we as a race cannot learn to treat other creatures with respect, we will never learn to treat other humans with respect.
Its all part of the same attitude - hatred sickens the mind and most serial killers started on animals.

  121. I have been reading alot of these stories, and tend to agree with most of them. Those who are out and out after the cats for no reason, should have shame, but those with a legit reason (protection of family, assets etc) I can sympathise.
I live in Sydney and have just moved to a house with a carport. I have a very expensive car, and a cat (or cats) is always putting dirt and scratches all over the paintwork. I have tried to find the owner, but the many many appartment units around here make it difficult, and I wouldnt be surprised if 80% of the surrounding population didnt even speak english. I have tried cat deterant sprays, gels, powders .. to no avail. I am at my rope's end! Atleast now I have ideas on how to permanately deal with the pests, but there is truely nothing else I can do. I'm sorry.

Muzzel pepper spray...buy it online, it works.

  123. Ok, I went with the cat trap.
Worked great, 1 down 1 to go.
I didn't want to waste my time with a bait that would spoil so I used sticky tape dipped in catnip and suspended in the trap. Lasts for days and days. Cat walked right in the trap layed along the fence line. Tried to talk to the neighbor about their animals before I purchased the trap, but was ignored. So I guess they will miss their cat but if they complain to me I think I will just IGNORE them. :>)
Next on my list is their dogs, boy are they going to miss them. I have a "special" treat for them.

  124. Thank you, Thank you I now have many good idea's on how to rid my lawn and garden. I have decided to stop trying to talk with the neighbors about their animals and stop spending my hard earned $$ on items to try and control their animals. You guys are correct, after of year of asking and trying to keep these animals off my lawn and garden its time to step it up to the "final" solution. I have tried and tried to reason with the neighbors, I have called all the city depts that were recommended to no avail. No more, this will end NOW, I've had it cleaning up after animals that are not mine.
Sorry, no more traps, electronic gizmo's,water sprays its LETHAL time. There will be no prisoners. I may even deliver little kitty back to the owner with a sad look on my face explaining how poor kitty got all tangled up and died, I am soooooo sooorrry! NOT! How did he get all wet, gee I don't know maybe if you watched where your animals went you might have a clue, but no you choose to let them run...sorry, kitty will run no more & rover is NEXT.

  126. Chili pepper, the hotter the better. I finally got tired of telling my neighbor about his car using my garden as his litter box. Sprinkled the hottest chili pepper all around the garden edge, about 2 feet wide. Saw the cat walk through it. Later could here it whalling as it sat next store trying to lick itself clean. I now buy it in bulk at the "depot" food store. Its a cheap fix and hopefully the cat will soon learn because talking with the neighbor didn't.
So observe the cat (times it's around) they are usually (at my house) very timely. Then before it arrives sprinkle your little surprise and later simply hose it away.
I have found that the hotter pepper works the best.
Just wish I could get the idiot neighbor to step in it and lick it too. I even told him I was going to use pepper, he said go ahead. Guess he deserves a howling kitty sitting at his back door. What an idiot!
I tried all the regular routes, talking with the neighbor, calling the city, citing the laws, all for naught.
So solve the problem your way what ever that is. It's your property protect it.

  127. I have read all the post, and have to admit that I did find this thread by typing "cat poison" into Google. Iam surrounded by 3 cat owners, one household has 5 cats, and the other 2 have 1 each. Like other post I also have 2 children under 2 years old who play in the garden and regularly find cat shit. They pull out our bins, shit everywhere, dig up the garden, scratch our cars, and the thing that makes me sick in the morning, they piss in the bonnet air vent on my car so when Iam driving all as I can smell is cat piss. I’ve watched them doing this and can only think its because of the heat that radiates from the bonnet and keeps them warm. It makes me physically sick and cost a fortune getting the scratches out of the paintwork. I have chosen not to have any pets because I don’t want my children catching any think germs, diseases ect. So why should I put up with other peoples pets threatening their health. I have tried numerous repellents which didn’t work and Iam at my whit’s end. Do I wait until one of my babies eats some poo and goes blind before I do anything about it. With 7 local cats and whatever strays visit I cannot see anything changing by speaking to the owners, they are the type of people not to care anyway. When my children grow up and play out, Iam will be 110% responsible for their actions as Iam a responsible parent. If my children are persistently causing trouble and I do nothing about it, and someone then gives them a hiding then Its my fault for not dealing with it. On the same token hurting a cat is a lot easier than hurting a person (owner) as people dont care as much for cats. I have never hurt an animal before, but if it meant that my children would be harmed due to the cat infestation we have, I would not hesitate to poison all cats near us. If a dog is off its lead and attacks someone, then it may be put down. If it poos and the owner doesn’t pick it up then he/she may be fined. If a youth is out and commits a crime then he/she will be dealt with by the law. If a cat roams freely and damages property, vandalises gardens, poisons my children, cost me money, then Iam left with no choice. If I have to make the choice then the cats will be removed. Most cat owners are irresponsible and should be poisoned themselves. The cats are their responsibility and not mine. Cat owners need to grow up and get a life. A CAT IS JUST A PET AND NOTHING ELSE, A CHILD IS A CHILD. DEAL WITH IT OR BE DEALT WITH….prosecution does not bother me in the slightest, if you have children you would understand.

  128. Re: 23 March,
I know how you feel. Please read the posts above. You will find plenty of idea's to help you in your quest to rid your property of these PESTS. Best of luck to you.
My problem "PESTS" are slowly starting to disappear. Already my yard has started to recover and I am now letting the little ones play outside. I think I still have one pesky little "PEST" to deal with, but he is a curious little bugger and will soon be dispatched as were his companions. For the first time in years my flowers are not being used as a litter box & my car is free of scratches and paw prints. I tried to speak with the offending owners but they could care less. Do what is necessary to keep your child safe and your property disease free.
Look up these dangers from Cats:
    Toxoplasmosis
    Cat-Scratch Disease
    Ringworm
    Campylobacter Infection
    Hookworm Infection

Little buggers are not so cute anymore are they?

  131. What can be done about wild homeless cats . I am a cat owner and I love my cat but there are hundreds of wild ones here that come down from the mountain woods and they keep coming through the cat flap and eating my cats food . They also fuck up my crops . Surely this would be classed as an animal which needs culling once or twice a year just as we do with any pest ? I shoot at them (but I dont hit them)to scare them off but they just come back a while later . So I did look here for information on selective poisoning . Obviously only in a very controlled manner . Although shooting would be more humain its quite noisy ! What do you sugest I do ?

  132. Thank God I found people with the same problem! My neighbors put out huge amounts of cat food that not only draws every cat in the neighborhood, but racoons, possums etc. My one neighbor has eight cats at last count and they woke me up last night with their screaming-mating so more cats will be here! They have actually attacked my two cats (that are indoor only cats) through the screens and fur has flown thru my house! They stole my have a heart trap last summer so now I have to go to other messures! Thanks for all your ideas, I'll let you know how it works. BTW, I tried rat bait mixed with cat food. The food was eaten, but the cats remained. I bought two different kinds of rat bate, with no results. I have also crushed up tylenol, but that did not work either. So I'll go the anti-freezed and pain medicine in cat food. Wish me luck!

    ReplyDelete
  133. Don't you just love it when the neighbors have no sense of responsibility. Just put the food out and let the hoards of cats eat and run wild in the neighborhood.
My "problem" has now be lowered to one fat cat. No traps here, no medicine, no poison. If the little bugger keeps his timely visits on track tonight will end my problems.
I have a rifle with a 2 liter bottle attached to quiet the report! Works like a charm, can't even here it over 5 feet away.

  134. wish I could do that. In my area, the houses are way to close and my neighbors already know I was trapping them last year and the pound was picking them up. The girls next door came and stole my trap. During the winter, I would follow boot tracks from my back yard, leading right into theirs. Of course, the cops would do nothing. I could not get them for tresspass or harassment. So, I now have to resort to this game. Too bad I can't set a trap for the neighbors.... Woodchuk killer

  135. Exellent idea about the 2lt bottle over the end of the rifle . Ill try that one . By the way , it seems that antifreeze dont work . The bottle cost me 6 quid and so far they have eaten qurter of the bottle with two whole tins of cat food and they are still alive . So I have caught 2 of them instead and then I took them for a drive to the sea side . Just about another 12 of em to catch now . I like the Rusian idea about the bird food . Happy hunting everyone .

  137. To the last post - Stuff 'em! If by telling these inconsiderate jerks what will happen to their beloved moggy if they are so inconsiderate to the rights of others it makes them more responsible then its a good thing isnt it? If they look after their pets they get to enjoy them and we are happy too - but if there are cats around that are nuisances do us all a favour and get rid of them any way you can. Poison, shoot, gas, drown - who cares as long as it works - go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  138. I agree - had all sorts of trouble with a neighbours 2 cats. Tried to be nice and asked her quite a few times to keep them under control but she said she wouldnt because she believed it was fine to allow them to roam at will. I trapped them both on successive days and drove out to a nearby woodlot and killed them with a big hit to the head with a solid lump of wood. Now there has been a letterbox drop of "Have you seen my Cats?" posters so I got a friend to scribble across it "I got sick of them crapping in my pot plants, garden and kids sandpit so I caught them and killed them!" and dropped it in her letterbox one night. She called the police and must have fingered me as they came to my house - asked to see my handwriting which of course I was happy to do and they asked if they could inspect my backyard. They went away happy because I didnt have a kids sandpit either. One of the Police told me quietly as they were leaving complaints about nuisance cats outnumber complaints about dogs by 50 to 1 but there is nothing they can do unless they are told who the owners are. Even then they can only give a warning and he wished more people would take care of the problem cats themselves. My neighbour obviously doesnt suspect me now as she showed me the poster with the scribbled message on it and had a real rant the other day about people who would do such a terrible thing to someones pet. So I really let her have it, told her how damned inconsiderate she was that she would subject other people to the mess her cats make and asked if she would get upset if someones dog was using her place for a toilet and she had to clean it up. Told her I wasnt surprised someone did her cats in because there was no other option. She has settled down a bit now and when I was talking to her husband he said they are having an outdoor run built because she wants to get another cat. Now, wouldnt that have been less grief and trouble for everyone if she had done that in the first place?

  139. The way I see it,
if a dog's owner is accountable for when the dog goes into the neighbour's yard, why are cat owners not accountable? I am sick of seeing other peoples cat in my yard. Just the other day I found a Rosella, dead in the yard... victim to a cat. (can't be a bird of prey, not in the suburbs anyway)
There is no excuse. Either keep your cat locked up indoors or face the consequences of your pet being taken to the pound, have large objects hurled at them or poisoned by individuals who are sick of it.
I believe cat owners are irresponsible crybabys.

  140. I also found this site by googling effective cat poison.
I have a postage stamp size garden in a place where the gardens are mostly concrete car parks. My 'garden ' is 15'x 6'.
As I write there are six cats in the garden. They are mostly feral. My next door neighbour had a female cat which had kittens, went wild now they are having kittens.
An old man comes and leaves food out for these cats and as a result we now have a mixture of strays, old toms and ferals in a very small area.
They have decimated my planting and my trees and the local birdlife. They have actually killed a twenty foot tree by scratching.
I rang the council (leicester city) and was told to call the rspca. They told me to call the council.
One of my children has an immuno related condition and I am at my wits end to reduce the numbers of these cats before they start to increase again.

I dont really want to poison the cats, I could even live with one or two in the area.
I have stupid neighbours one of whom had a tom cat now gone wild, and now feeds the ferals.

Americans and Aussies are lucky they have coyotes and dingos to keep the populations in check.

As there is no help available other then sites like this I might have no choice but to poison them.
I would prefer to shoot them and feed the bodies to the crows.

    ReplyDelete
  141. "I would prefer to shoot them and feed the bodies to the crows."

I reckon shoot them and feed them to the strays

  142. Take your time and read the many above posts. I am sure you will find one that will help you with your problem. In you case I would say poison is your best hope with that many mangy little buggers. With that many visiting your garden I would think they would almost fight over a nice bowl of antifreeze mixed with tuna oil and rat poison (crushed to a fine powder).
Best of luck, my yard at the moment is free of cats. Maybe because a couple of "disappeared" lately.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I put their heads on spikes all round the edge of the garden and have fited red bulbs that flash on and off in their eye sockets to scare away their fury friends . And with their skins I make Davie Crockett hats for the elderly residents in the neighbourhood . They love them and tell me about how warm they are during cold winter nights . Everyone seems to have a cat for a hat round here . Happy impailings everybody .

    ReplyDelete
  144. When you see a cat coming into your garden, taking endless shit, slashing away at your outdoor bird aviary, opening the fucking hinges and killing a cat when you have a large neighborhood with many owners who don' give a shit.

If the cat was a human it would be trespassing. But since it isn't I can do what I'd do to a burglar.

It that fair, that it murders many wild birds? The owners don't give a fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Dunno much about poisoning cats but I do know that anti-freeze is also a summer coolant so is essential in bother Summer and Winter.
Although modern cars might not need topping up there are plenty of older cars being cared for by environmentally aware drivers and they do need topping up occasionally.

If I chose to leave antifreeze on my land and you chose to let you cat roam on my land how have I poisoned your cat? Surely it's your neglect that killed it?

    ReplyDelete
  146. OK. so I put out rat poison in tuna, the cats ate it. for weeks I put it out and the cats ate it. I also put out antifreeze, I don't know if they drank it.
Anyway, the damn things are all over, not one is missing. Any help would be appreciated. I am over whelmed with ferels-at least 15 different ones in my yard. Help please! Any poison cocktails you know of that will work?

    ReplyDelete
  147. Wet tea bags soaked with Olbas Oil seems to have made a big differance here.
I find my wood chipping disturbed, but no shit.
They are now shitting in their own garden for the first time ever. The owner is not too happy, HA!
The next time I find shit I WILL poison the lot of them.
    Probably spent about £200 now.
    I've tried.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Put food out for them that has been sprayed with a liberal dose of an insect surface spray. A more certain way is simply to buy a cat trap and kill them with a sharp hit on the head with a length of harwood. If they are true ferals you wont be able to hold them while crushing their skulls so gas them - details of exactly how is in previous posts

    ReplyDelete
  149. I've heard and read all the arguments for and against poisoning cats.

My observation is in line with comments from others who feel that cats and their owners' just don't have to comply with any of the rules associated with other pets. Why are cats allowed to shit all over the place when dog owners' must act more responsibly?

Also, when rabbits breed in large numbers and damage the farmers' garden (crops), they are poisoned or deliberately infected with myxomatosis.

Double standards in favour of the cat all around. This cannot be fair and is good reason why cats are hated by so many.

    ReplyDelete
  150. We have wild cats because owners fail to take responsibility. The diseases they leave in their feces represents serious risk to my son, and in spite of what many of you will say, his health outranks the life of any cat.
We have spent hundreds of dollars and tried repellants, water, etc. to rid ourselfs of these dirty pests and now we are forced to kill an animal because cat owners won't take responsibility. It goes against my beliefs; it sickens me, but the family always comes first.

  151. My name is KAY and
I ABSOLUTLY LOVE CATS!! I HAVE SEVERAL. My sweeties are all spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. I also live in the U.S. and only recently have i had a problem with poisioning. When I found out who the culprits were, it wasn't long before they sold their homes and have moved. I became a far worse neighbor than anything my cats may have been to them! (ALL LEGAL :D) I have owned my home for a very long time. My cats I were here before most of them moved in. They had to have seen my sweeties on my property before they made their purchase. I DO NOT TOLERATE animal cruelty. All the people who complain in their posts about the droppings and such. DO THEY shoot the birds for the crap they leave everywhere or the other animals (OTHER THAN SOME DOGS) that roam freely? My children and I love our cats, so its buyer beware if DO NOT LIKE CATS-- LIVE SOME PLACE ELSE :)

  152. KAY SAYS...what a bunch of cry babies!!!! hahaha If a cat is your biggest problem in this screwed up world then you should really wake up!! I will keep getting rid of STUPID NEIGHBOURS !! as fast as some of you talk about killing cats. HAHAHAHA :D

  153. Here is the one, just one of the many causes of the issue at hand:

Immigrant populations' viewpoint on animal welfare.

After spending much time travelling Asia (For work, it was not a choice.) I came to understand after much talk with English speaking natives, many of whom (Co-workers at my firm.) also spent much time living/working periodically in the UK, USA or Tri-Nations states, what their views on, "How/Why to keep a cat".

Most (If not all.) of them will emigrate with these same ideas and views, which they will not change regardless of the laws, rules or customs of their "host" nation.

    Example; Vietnamese/Thai Nationals.

In their custom, aside from dinner, Cats are bought to control mice/rat populations. They are not kept as "pets" per se in Western views. They do not supply addition food/water for these animals, lock them away, get them any injections/welfare, as they are simply "disposable" (Or "Edible.) mouse traps to these people.

So, if you are lucky enough to have a family of Vietnamese immigrants living across the street, I do mean lucky as we have much to learn of them, they can do a mean barbeque and are great neighbours (As they positively murder burglurs/intruders and will also keep an eye on neighbours properties.), you may notice that they will have 2-4 cats at any one time.

These will always be mangy, thin, disgusting, flea-infested diseased scum-bag animals. Through no incessant "fault" of the animal, but of the owner. The owners do not care if they live, die, or are in pain. Only that they kill some mice during their lifespan.

When I asked some Vietnamese neighbours of mine about shooting cats, they said they wouldnt care. Noom (His real name.) in fact joked, "If you shoot mine, please bring it back for a barbeque.". Noom was joking but the point was shown.

If the owner does not care about the animals wellbeing, the kindest thing you could do is put it down humanely. The authorities ("The Pound".) would do the same to these diseased, feral or un-cared for animals anyway, either immediately or after 90 days at Tax-Payers cost.

Further to this point. I have had at least one cat my entire life, they have always lived permanently indoors, except for the odd occasion of being allowed out under supervision.

However, I have paid for the quiet, peaceful enjoyment of my property which is enshirned in Law. If I feel an animal is a risk to myself, my family or my livestock, through attack, scare or disease, to kill the offender, is exempt from the Legal recourse under the Animal Protection Act [Varia.].

  154. "Kay" is the perfect example of why so many people take the action they do. "Kay" thinks its fine for her cats to wander at will over other peoples properties because "they were there first". What an incredibly inconsiderate selfish cow! So you made life hell for someone who "may" in your selfish mind have been responsible for poison being deployed? What if it wasnt them? Not that a bitch like you would care anyway, your kind has no consideration for the rights of others. Be careful who you take action against - if they find out it was you, you might get your medicine back WITH INTEREST!

  155. I'v never hurt a animal deliberately, we had cats at home when i was a kid, and i have dogs of my own, by neighbour had cats but we have big fenceing and he put spikes on the top to put the cat off jumping over and iv never had no grief from his pet in like 10 years, now hes moved and we have some silly fat bint move in, with cats, and shes removed the spikes, i grow veggies and this morning my sweetcorn are dead and the area stinks of cat shit, iv asked to put the spikes back up but she not intereasted so i ask if she wants to come round and pick up the shit and obviously she doesnt, if my dogs shit in her garden you can be surte she would be round here expecting me to clean it up, its a shame the cat will possibly pay the price for having a ignorent lazy arogent cunt of a owner

    ReplyDelete
  156. i was angry about my veggies, im going to poke cocktail sticks in the soil around them. im pretty sure that will work and not as nasty as some of my previous ideas

  157. Don't want to hurt any cats, so was looking up the cost and method of borrowing a Cat Trap from local council.
    Interesting 2 points below:

    a) Cat traps are available from Council. A cat trap application form must be completed. Please contact Council on 1300 ** ** **.
Sure, no probs, but then this:

    b) Only feral cats will be trapped and any owned or stray domestic cats will be released if caught.

    I kid you not!!

The f**kers are just going to let them go again!!

Sorry to the cat lovers, tried to do the right thing, anti-freeze it is. :-(

  158. Kay,
What city do you live in? I would like to buy your neighbors house.
I think I am a better shot than you are! Your sweet little pussies wouldn't last a week with me. I have become a expert at ridding the neighborhood where I now live of wandering cats like yours. Most of my neighbors love me for it, those that don't have wandering pets that just seem to disappear. My garden is sprouting the most beautiful flowers free of any extra additions added by the neighbors cats. Funny thing is the cats come to me seems they just can't resist my little temptations :> ). I just sit back and watch the little buggers trot right up to my little offerings and then "poof" they disappear never to be seen again. It is silent (well, almost) and deadly quick. Took me 3 years to figure it out but it works like a charm.
So Kay let me know what city you live in maybe I can make a 2-3 day visit and help out your neighbors.

  159. Ive been letting my Tom go out and shag all the ferels so when they have kittens I can shoot them for sadistic target practice . I then make cat food out of them for other cats to eat which tickles me pink making them be canabal cats . I have to do it you see as it stops me from killing people ! lol

  164. I have a SEVERE allergy to cats; cat shit can be toxic to young childen and some adults. People DO NOT care where their cats go and what they do . If I could find a way to rid my huge back CAT SHITHOUSE (aka my garden) of cats then i would. I HATE CLEANING CAT SHIT which i have to do befor my son plays out - all this bullshit you people are saying is just bullshit - you love your cats so much then keep them inside and let them shit all over your stinking houses

  165. For the past two months I have been soaking tea bags with Olbas Oil.
I have seen the cats sneaking into my garden, but they no longer shit there. They are shitting in their owner's garden now. This has wiped the smile off his ignorant face.
I don't know why this works, but it does.
This was my final try, I was going to kill the whole fucking lot of them.

  166. I live in a rural area where we have lots of deer and wild turkeys and skunks. Recently I have been seeing a few feral cats roaming around. These are very bad animals and need to be gotten rid of. They definatly seek out and kill young baby turkeys and any other natural prey they can find. If I try to trap them I usually get a skunk. Ever try to get a akunk out of a trap. Good luck! Unfourtantly I am thinking of using a poison.. I enjoy watching all the wildlife here where I live but pretty soon all I will have to look at is wild cats. This is unacceptable to me and I must do something.

  168. If an owner fails to lock up their cat then thats too bad, i breed guinea pigs and let me tell you, there is nothing worse than waking up and finding 6 tiny little baby guinea pigs lined up on your back step with a proud cat waiting for a reward...

My neighbours cat killed 6 of my pets, so i killed JUST ONE of hers...

cat are a danger to the property and pets of other people, if you cant keep your cat locked up then you deserve to watch your violent abomination of an animal slowley die of kidney falure...

also, to all the other people with valid reasons to kill a cat, castor beans are a good alternative to anti-freeze, although not as effective as they dont like the taste as much...

  170. Hey! I resent the comment "surprise" when you said he lives in Australia.
What does that suppose to mean?

    ReplyDelete
  171. There seems to be lots of comments by Freddie Fox defending cat's behaviour as 'natural'. 'Behaviour' being defecating where they please together with the unimaginable cruelty they inflict on small rodents and birds... delivering them to their owners still alive and then proceeding to 'play' with them before becoming bored with their blood-lust game.

If cat owners can't take responsibility for their pets and are happy to let them roam and live 'naturally' (defecating where they please together with depleting the urban bird and rodent populations) they shouldn't be surprised or upset if nature takes it course and 'something' above them in the food chain behaves in a similarly 'natural' way.

Rules is rules, and if 'natural' is the watchword I don't fancy the cat's chances.

  174. i absolutely hate cats and have got to the stage i am considering poisoning one in particular that keeps coming into my house!!! i could deal with them roaming my garden at their leisure, shitting all over the place, and ruining the garden, but they have started to venture into my house and its not on. i have young children and my friends do to and they come over a lot, so to have cat shit all over the place really pisses me off. cat shit is actually very dangerous and if it gets into the eyes can make you blind. not that i am going to go and rub cat shit in my eyes, but what if one of the kids end up with muck on their face and it has cat shit in it? what then? i think it is absolutely shocking that cats are allowed to roam freely. if this is the case, they should not be allowed as pets and should be left to roam in the wild. we have a large sand pit outside which gets covered with a plastic cover each night and a wooden lid on top as well. needless to say, the little fuckers have still crept in during the day when the kids have been out playing, and i have had to gut the whole sand pit and buy new sand so many times. i have caught them shitting in my stones and burying it, in my soil, around my flowers, everywhere really. one sprayed on my stairs carpet as well, so we washed it with a carpet cleaner but ended up having to lift it because the smell just would not disappear. i am not an animal hater- by far. we have a hamster and two indoor rabbits. the rabbits are very well trained and go in their litter tray and we like to let them out onto the grass to run around. kind of hard when there is a bout 30 cats in the neighbourhood aiming for them. so as a result we cant take our eyes of the rabbits. which is a shame really because we would love to just let the rabbits hop in and out as they please. our hamster has a big run in the house as well which he plays in for hours. so i am getting really pissed off that my own pets are having to miss out on some freedom because these stupid cats are now starting to come in my house. people should not have to put up with other peoples animals coming in their house. i didnt know about the antifreeze thing until now. so next time i am doing a shop, there will be a can in the trolley! i will be sitting a bowl at the bottom of my stairs and if they come in my house again, then that is what they will get. sick of it! even the rabbits are trained better that these ugly flee ridden pests!!! i have spoken to the neighbours- to no avail. one even had the cheek to give my son a row the other day for scaring her cat because he shoo-ed it out the garden! wonder how they would fel if i allowed my kids to roam in their garden and in their house when ever they pleased! im pretty sure they would have something to say or even have social services at my door for letting the kids run wild! i mean people just go to work or go out for the night and leave their cats to run riot in the streets! how can that be allowed? you would get fined if you had a dog that you let out itself and allowed to shit everywhere without picking it up, so why not cats!?!?! bring on the antifreeze.

i am not an animal hater- by far. we have a hamster and two indoor rabbits. the rabbits are very well trained and go in their litter tray and we like to let them out onto the grass to run around. kind of hard when there is a bout 30 cats in the neighbourhood aiming for them. so as a result we cant take our eyes of the rabbits. which is a shame really because we would love to just let the rabbits hop in and out as they please. our hamster has a big run in the house as well which he plays in for hours. so i am getting really pissed off that my own pets are having to miss out on some freedom because these stupid cats are now starting to come in my house. people should not have to put up with other peoples animals coming in their house. i didnt know about the antifreeze thing until now. so next time i am doing a shop, there will be a can in the trolley! i will be sitting a bowl at the bottom of my stairs and if they come in my house again, then that is what they will get. sick of it! even the rabbits are trained better that these ugly flee ridden pests!!! i have spoken to the neighbours- to no avail. one even had the cheek to give my son a row the other day for scaring her cat because he shoo-ed it out the garden! wonder how they would fel if i allowed my kids to roam in their garden and in their house when ever they pleased! im pretty sure they would have something to say or even have social services at my door for letting the kids run wild! i mean people just go to work or go out for the night and leave their cats to run riot in the streets! how can that be allowed? you would get fined if you had a dog that you let out itself and allowed to shit everywhere without picking it up, so why not cats!?!?! bring on the antifreeze.

  179. I like many other frustrated people on this forum suffer the abuse that cats defacate and urinate over my front and rear garden to such an extent that our children are not allowed to play in our own garden, due to the health risks. I have taken the relevant neighbours to task over this and politely explained why it is unacceptable, however I too meet with the same ambivalent approach to their being allowed to roam freely because its simply what cats do. Now the issue here is one of responsible ownership and very often the reason cats defecate and urinate on other peoples properties is because the owners do not like to have a cat litter tray in their own house due to the associated odours. Unfortunately if you want cats this is something you should have to put up with and not your neighbours. Why should anyone else have to put up with it is beyond me. However I accept that the majority of people who respond with vitriol to their cat problem are more than likely reasonable people like myself who feel that they have been pushed to the Nth degree of what is acceptable and feel that all they have left as a solution is to remove the problem. My mother owned and bred cats for 25 years and not once in that time was an issue encountered with any neighbour, because the cats were housed in well maintainted and heated cat runs or indoors of our family home where regularly cleaned litter trays were installed in a utility room. If the owner is unwilling too then the only other solution apart from a local neighbourly euthanasia is to start going down a route of more officialdom by complaining to local councils and animal protection groups like the RSPCA that the owner does not look after their pets properly to hopefully embarass them into action. Very often this incites more tension in what should be more peaceful neighbourhoods.
If my children consistently did something to annoy or upset a neighbour then I am duty bound as a parent to do something about it and not just say little Johnny is just like that. So to those people who like to quote the reap what you so saying are probably reaping the ignorance of their inaction on their pet. If that means the loss of a pet then the owner has to accept their lack of responsibility has in more than someway contributed to their pet being got rid off. If one of my children kept making a nuisance of itself to a neighbour and got a clip round the ear for it as a warning, I would tell them they probably deserved it. In the same way when we instruct a child not to do something because it may hurt them, when they do it and go ouch and start crying and tell you they are hurt we explain how they were warned and didn't heed the warning and so must accept the consequences of their action. If a pet owner has been respectfully asked to do something about their pet but refuses then what else does the normal reasonable person have as a viable course of action?

  183. Ooops.
I often leave anti-freeze out in dishes, as it was good for killing slugs, which eat my plants.
Did not know that anti-freeze was harmfull to cats or that cats would even drink it.
Will not be leaving it out anyone, can anyone recommemd a way of dealing with slugs without risking cats?

  184. If you are going to toss a cat in a wheelie bin it should be dead first!! And make sure there are no cameras about. But then, do it the easy way - anti freeze and a compost heap - Ha Haaaaaaaa

  186. To the ones defending the feral cats, go jump off a cliff and take the cats with you. When you say the cats don't hurt anyone, you don't have a clue. I have mexican neighbors who illegally allow their dogs to run loose. The dogs bark 24 hours a day, even at the wind. The feral cats roam freely and make the dogs bark even more. The mexicans throw dirty diapers in the parking lot (too lazy to walk 30 feet to the dumpster) and the dogs eat the diaper contents then rip the diapers to shreds. No one ever picks up the trash here. We have a total loser dog catcher in our hayseed town who never does his job and if we complain to the apt manager, she will evict you for complaining. It's a no win all the way. Total misery. The dogs barking tell me when to go to sleep and when to wake up. I can't afford to move. It's a good thing I'm a civilized person or I could go postal. When I get the money, I plan to do some dastardly things to get rid of the cats. I can't do anything about the dogs because their irresponsible owners stay up 24 hours a day.

  187. I applaud anonymous for giving the free antifreeze to the cats. Why should anonymous have to deal with capturing the cats and hauling their furry asses across town to a shelter? I set out live traps and catch them, then put them in a large burlap bag, tie it securely then throw them off a bridge. Funny thing is, I never see them again!

  188. I've read a lot of these comments and there is a definite pattern here.

I am a animal lover but have found this site searching "Cat poison" because I am at my wits end. My 4 year old son has just stepped on cat excrement and taken it into the house after playing in his own garden with me. Every time we go out there we have to remove about half a dozen "piles" from the middle of our lawn. Its digusting.

I have never considered harming an animal before but my opinion of cats has now changed big time. To me, they are now a pest or vermin in the same way as rats etc.

If only the owners would respect those around them.

  197. "just wandering if your the guy from sheffield that's doing all poisoning".

don't know if you realise but it won't just be cats that you have killed, badgers, fox's, hedgehogs, dogs, and what ever else ate the poison during the night.

don't think anyone is interested in your vile comment's to be honest, 196 comments in 22 months hardly the topic of the century...is it ????

i don't really have a problem with cats, dogs are a bigger nusance where i live, atacking peaple, barking all day/night,shitting all over the playing field so the kids fall in it. dont blame the animal they don't know any better, blame the irresponsible owner's who allow them to do these things.

most people who poison small animals progress to poisoning bigger subjects, that's if you haven't already.
you obviously have a screw loose and i fear for the wellfare of anyone close to you, but there is help for people like you...go find out, you never know it might even transform you into a likeable person.

i honestly feel so sorry for your kid's having your evil genes passed onto them...obviously their going to grow up with your sad mentality.

thankfully you are the minority...and the world is still a nice place even with you in it...jog on mr.

  200. I am enjoying reading all these comments because I can't believe how many like minded people there are to me on here.

I think cats are disgusting things and shouldn't be allowed to roam the streets. The problems I am having is that this so called Pet of someone is shitting on my garage roof (yes the roof), on my patio, on my lawn, on the bottom of my child's slide, in my borders and anywhere else it so pleases.

I spent a lot of money buying this house and now feel that I can't enjoy my surroundings because of this vermin. I can't let my toddler in the garden and when we do (after spending time cleaning up the repulsive smelling crap) I have to bleach her slide before she can even use it.

How is this reasonable???? Why should people be allowed to keep these animals. If I was to allow my toddler to go and do her business in the middle of people's lawns then I would be taken to court or have her removed from me. So why should cats be able to get away with doing it without repurcussions?

I am all for poisoning the little shits. If it means I can enjoy my house and garden then I am all for it.

And for those cat owners out there who feel it is cruel, well you should try and experience having a cat shit in your surroundings. Oh that's right you can't, because they don't shit in their own gardens they do it in everyone elses. People who own cats make me sick and they should also be punished for allowing their animals to behave this way. But as we all know, cat owners are idiots and don't believe there is any wrong in their animals destroying other people's property. They all say that cats are wild animals and they can't control what they do with them. So if they are wild animals, you shouldn't have them as pets.
