Cat toes are like human fingers. They are very dextrous and useful. They are more than useful; they are essential to the cat.
They can clasp objects. Giane Portal, who took this excellent photograph calls it, "Love necklaces". This probably refers to the necklace and the loving relationship between this cat and the person dangling the necklace, which by the way, this cat is so efficiently clasping with his or her "cat toes".
Interesting point - if toes are on feet are the forepaws of a cat, his or her hands and the digits therefore fingers? In which case this cat is using his fingers to grab that necklace.
The claws and digits of a cat together allows the cat to scratch (to defend), to climb, to stretch, to mark territory and to play. A wide range of actions.
Why then deprive the cat of all these pleasures and natural behaviors by removing the last phalanx of the cat's toes in a declawing operation?
Let's let the cat behave naturally; to allow our cat to express his or her natural drives. In this way the cat will be more content. A content cat is a much better cat companion for us. It is a win-win situation.
A cat breed with particularly long cat toes is the Sphynx. Well it looks that way. Maybe it is simply because we can see the toes more easily as there is no fur to get in the way?
I am not sure, but I think in fact that the Sphynx cat does have finger like toes! This is because this cat is monkey like in behavior. Very active and a great climber.
Many wildcats are great climbers too. One monkey like wildcat is the margay, a cat that is as small as a domestic cat and indeed can be domesticated and which is known for acrobatic climbing in the forests where it lives.
