The reason why domestic cats curl up in a ball when sleeping

Domestic cats don't always do it but they often curl up into a ball when sleeping. There are two basic reasons why they do this.

Safety: when they curl up into a ball, if they are a tabby cat - and the tabby cat coat is the original camouflaged coat - they look like a snake. Snakes are known within the animal kingdom to be dangerous. So curling up into a ball protects the cat. Also it provides good camouflage against their surroundings.

Let's remember that all domestic cats back in the day, thousand years ago, were tabby cats. So curling up to look like a snake was effective in those days and that trait has carried through to today even though many domestic cat are not tabby cats.

Heat retention: there are two elements to this. When a cat curled up into a ball the surface area of the cat compared to their volume becomes more favourable in terms of retaining heat. This is based on the principle that bigger animals can retain heat better than smaller animals because the surface area of bigger animals compared to their body mass or volume is lower than for small animals and therefore there is less opportunity for heat to be lost into the atmosphere. This is a well known physical property.

And secondly, when the cat is curled up two surfaces are pressed together and therefore rather than body heat being lost into the atmosphere the heat passes from one surface to the other and warms up the cat.

Conservation of energy: cats sleep for long periods. Adopting a curled up position is helpful in the conservation of energy through minimising muscle usage.

Instinctive behaviour: this is all instinctive behaviour from their wild ancestors.

Spread out: Sometimes they spread out and this will normally happen when the ambient temperature is high and they want to cool off. Alternatively, sometimes when they are on their human caregiver's lap they might spread out because it means the heat from the person's lap has more opportunity to pass upwards into the cat. Once again, it's a way of maximising warmth.

Inherited: This desire to be warm is inherited from the domestic cat's wild cat ancestor which lived and still lives in North Africa and Asia. But in North Africa the temperature is high and the domestic cat has retained the need to live in a high temperature environment. And where they can't they have evolved very dense longhaired coats such as for the Siberian cat. Two other examples are the Norwegian Forest Cat and the Maine Coon to a lesser extent because these coast of America is not quite as cold as Siberia!

In conclusion, the reason why domestic cat curl up into a ball when sleeping is to retain heat and to maintain security.

You think that you have a Russian Blue mix cat. Please read this.

A lot of people on social media think that they have a purebred mix cat without papers and one of those breeds which is often discussed in this context is the Russian Blue which is referred to by aficionados of the breed as a "Russian". And you will find that aficionados or experts of the breed shed some light on the Russian mix cat.

This image is here to emphasis the need for green eyes in the Russian Blue. It is not meant to be a true likeness of the breed. Is is not except for the colour as the whisker pads in this illustration are a bit puffy. Image: MikeB

And I would chip in here as an expert of sorts as well. One issue with the Russian is that it's a cat breed which looks quite similar in body conformation to a random bred or moggy cat. It's a bit slender in general than most or your average moggy but nonetheless it is a fairly standard looking cat in the colour 'blue' which is a grey.

And there are moggy cats which look very much like Russian Blue cats. And it is these cats that social media users sometimes photograph and upload the photograph to social media such as Reddit.com to ask whether there cat is a purebred or a Russian Blue mix.

And an expert will say that they are not. In fact the expert will go further and say that most of the Russian Blue mix cats on Reddit.com - and I guess other social media websites - are simply mixed breed cats. There is no Russian Blue in them.

Russian Blue mix

I guess some might be a mix and let's be clear, a Russian Blue mix will be the offspring of a purebred Russian Blue and a domestic shorthaired cat i.e. a moggy. That is a first generation from that mating.

An expert on Reddit.com says that "Mixes don't happen in this breed but due to a lack of education and the Internet which likes to talk about Russians and show a photo of a domestic cat people don't understand the breed or process very well."

One reason why there are few Russian Blue mixes available is because they are a rare and expensive breed and most of these cats are neutered at 3-4 months of age. Some breeders will send unneutered Russians to purchasers but they will instruct them to have their kitten neutered at the required time and that will be part of the contract.

And they are often sold as indoor cats and therefore there is little chance of them mating with another cats outside.

So there are very few Russian Blue mixes and secondly a good quality, nice looking mixed breed cat that happens to be grey in colour might look very much like a Russian Blue purebred cat. Or in lieu of that they might think it is a Russian Blue mix but for the reasons above they won't be.

Emerald green eyes

One key element to differentiate a Russian Blue mix from a purebred cat of this breed is that the eyes should be in emerald green. Perhaps they might not be glistening emerald green but they should be green nonetheless are not yellow or any other colour. The breed standard insists that they are green and no other colour. Some say that the Russian's eyes change from yellow when subadult to green later on. All kittens have blue eyes by the way.

The Russian Blue cats bred in Russia, which is the home of this cat breed (click this for the origin), are said to have beautiful emerald green eyes because the Russian readers are very particular about this. And Russian breeders tend to breed with greater enthusiasm and determination than other breeders in other countries. They might overdo it sometimes but they end up with a cat which is absolutely on the nail in terms of meeting the breed standard which for the Russians would be the FiFe breed standard.

So, look for those green eyes at first and then be sceptical if somebody says that they want to sell you a Russian Blue. I always say and I'll say again that if you want to buy a purebred cat you should go to the breeder and check out their operation and talk to them; asked questions. If you buy sight unseen, online a so-called Russian Blue you might be scammed. I could state that more strongly and say that you will be scammed but I don't want to exaggerate.

And if somebody says I want to sell you a Russian Blue Mix, I've made my point in this article. But perhaps one of the key checks will be those green eyes.

Thai rice field planted to make a picture of a cat by artist farmer

The Bangkok Post has published they really nice and interesting picture of a cat holding onto a fish and about to eat it. It looks a bit like a painting but when you inspect it carefully you can see that it is a rice field. Criss-crossing the field are pedestrian walkways for the farmers to gain access to the field I guess.

The rice field picture of a cat was created by a farmer and an artist: Thunyapong Jaikum in rice fields in the Chiang Province.

The photo is from Reuters.

The work of Thunyapong Jaikum in rice fields in the Chiang Province. Image: Reuters from the artist I guess.

They expect thousands of people to turn up to have a look at it. And to enjoy it I'm told they built or are building viewing platforms as that is the only way you can enjoy it.

The photograph must have been taken with a drone from several hundred feet up. And that's one problem with this excellent project. You won't get the same view from a viewing platform which is perhaps 80 feet up.

As you can see it is green and brown with some grey for the fish.

I'm not sure how they did it but the green areas are probably the growing rice in the field while the brown areas are probably the earth (or different coloured rice seedlings).

How did the artist map it out? They don't explain. I'm going to guess but I could be completely wrong! They clearly used a drone to photograph the finished image.

I would like to suggest that they used the same drone to create the image. There were two people. One operated the drone and the artist did the marking out.

The artist was able to look at himself as he marked out the ground because with these drones you have a screen on the controls which allows you to see what the drone sees.

As the artist was able to see himself on the ground he could move around marking out the dark areas with poles or some other brightly coloured object which was easy to see from hundreds of feet up.

When using those marked out areas he was able to plant the rice or clear the rice from those areas. I would think it was likely that he planted all the rice so it was all green and then removed some of the green by removing the planted rice to reveal the earth below.

If the brown areas are not earth they'll be some other plant as I am told the rice plant does not change colour when growing. Although the Bangkok Post says that the rice seedlings change colour from brown to green. My research says otherwise.

"No, rice does not change color while growing. The color of rice remains consistent throughout its growth cycle. Rice plants typically have green leaves during the growing stages, and as they mature, they produce rice grains that can vary in color depending on the variety." - AI computer Poe.

The result is a high quality image; done very well. Well done to the man.

More and more Britons, especially the young and poor are overweight with dire consequences for the NHS (and cats!)

Intro: I believe that it is time for the British people and other Westerners to put aside the sensibilities of obese people and start to criticise them. I know it's difficult and I know it's troubling to do that in a woke world and we need to respect other people. I get all that but human obesity epidemic levels are having catastrophic effects on society and I would argue on our animal companions.

I would argue quite strongly that obese people are less good cat care givers in general, and I stress "in general" (some are great), and they might be prone to normalising obesity in their cats and dogs. This I think is technically possible and is indeed quite likely.

When people assess the weight of their cat and dog, if they get it wrong they tend to underestimate it. In other words, many cat and dog owners are incapable of recognising mild obesity in their cat or dog. They think that there cat and dog have correct weights when they haven't. Being obese yourself encourages this perception.

And the obesity epidemic is a much bigger problem than that. It is costing the NHS £19 billion a year in treating those who are too fat and the associated lost productivity costs the economy £15 billion annually. It is putting people out of work. But I believe obesity is a symptom of attitude. Obesity can be beaten with self-discipline and a good attitude. I touch on these matters below.

Note: there is an obesity epidemic among cats as well as people. People should take note of that. It indicates to me that there is a link between human obesity and feline obesity which supports my argument on this page that when people are obese they have difficulty in assessing their cat companion's obesity. It becomes normal. That's the critical point I wish to make.

"Consistent with previous studies, it has been observed that pet owners tend to normalize their pets’ body condition, leading to an underestimation in the case of overweight animals and an overestimation for underweight ones. What was once considered “overweight” now tends to be viewed as “about right”. This shift is further amplified by the influence of social media platforms, and a similar trend may be occurring in the context of pets, perpetuating the belief that overweight animals are the norm in today’s society." - study report: The Perception of the Body Condition of Cats and Dogs by French Pet Owners and the Factors Influencing Underestimation.

Is the growing obesity epidemic among Westerners - and I am mainly referring to Britons - a symptom of a breakdown in society as we know it which includes laziness! Yes, at its heart this is all about a lack of self-discipline and one consequence of that failing is to become fat. Becoming fat is self-indulgent and sloppy. The papers don't talk about this underlying problem in British society. They just tell us as The Times does today that 3,000 ward admissions a day are linked to obesity in the UK. It is a horror story.

But the press and the government need to genuinely tackle the problem. There is a reticence to criticise people who are obese. I understand it but I am afraid that political correctness and the woke movement has contributed to obesity. Society has accepted it. It has become embedded and normalised.

The government allows food manufacturers to continue to produce unhealthy processed foods high in salt and sugar. Junk food abounds on the shelves of supermarkets. It is addictive food. It seems that many have lost the art of cooking from raw, healthy foods to create simple meals that are cheaper and healthier.

It is not enough to report on human obesity, there needs to be an examination of the underlying causes. These will be deep within society. But a lack of desire to work and to keep oneself in good physical condition must be major contributing factors.

"Hospital admissions linked to obesity have doubled in six years to more than 3,000 people per day according to NHS figures that highlight the extent of Britain's weight problem." - The Times.

I have expanded the geographical area where there is a weight problem to Europe and North America. But the same problem exists I believe.

Obese people are far more likely to become ill. Numerous serious illnesses are linked with obesity. Combine the illnesses that are a consequence of obesity and the obesity itself causing lack of mobility and you have a person who is much less able to be a good cat caregiver. Yep, it comes back to pet cats as well. And the truth is that people who are habitually obese tend to normalise it and believe that obese cats are normal-weight cats when they are not. The result? An obesity epidemic among the cat populations of North America and Britain. More ill-health which could and should be avoided with a bit of self-discipline.

What happened to self-discipline? Why has self-indulgence arrived in the scene so dramatically? Is it partly down to a lack of education? It seems that those who've had the benefit of a good education are less likely to become obese.

There may also be an ethnic demographic dimension to this story. Luton is cited as the municipality where there is the biggest health toll from obesity with one hospital admission linked to weight for every 20 residents last year. See the quote below on the ethic mix of Luton.

The white ethnic group makes up 45.2 per cent of the population of Luton meaning there is a non-white majority in the town. The next largest ethnic group is Asian which increased from 60,952 in 2011 to 83,325 in 2021. The Asian group makes up 37 per cent of the population of Luton.

Luton Borough Council
It is time for the UK government to be much bolder and stricter in tackling the obesity epidemic engulfing the country.

300 cans of wet food per day to feed rescue cats of Naples, Florida

This story highlights the constant pressure on cat rescue organisations to raise funds to feed their cats. There are other expenses obviously but the quantity of food consumed is enormous. And growing in the case of Purradise Gardens in Naples, Florida, USA as the number of rescued cats seem to growing all the time as the human population of Naples grows because it appears to be a nice place to live and the weather must play a role.

"We're seeing more stray cats. People surrender or dump cats because of the economy. Shelters are full, forcing people to leave them on the streets," said Megan Sorvara, the facility's director of Purradise Gardens.

They rescue organisation have a Christmas campaign to get more food! It must be a constant battle.

It is estimated that 50,000 feral and stray cats live in the area. It appears to be a growing problem. Sadly I see this as a failure in cat domestication. People need to be more responsible.

A good thing about the story is that they are feeding wet cat food. I'll presume that they also use dry sometimes. But it appears that the primary food is wet. I am one of those who believe that wet is best. Good dry food is okay for night time grazing but it can dehydrate cats which can, I believe, tend to predispose cats to urinary tract issues or even Type 2 diabetes according to a well-known American veterinarian.
