Lion versus Tiger - Lion Wins

This is a very long, very comprehensive page full of links and information on the once hotly debated subject of lion vs tiger. Please scroll all the way down if you are interested in reading a full treatise on the subject. This page supports the argument that the lion would win. The page was first published in May 2012. I have decided that it needs to be republished almost 10 years later as it is too good to languish at the bottom of the archive. I hope you enjoy it. You will if the fictional lion versus tiger fight (in the wild) interests you.

Updating note: When this was published a couple of years ago (it feels a lot longer) all the links worked but now many are broken. Sorry. But this happens with external links. A lot of sites simply move, delete or archive pages over time. This page remains a useful resource for those researching the lion versus tiger debate.
It is really a hypothetical fight because these two species of big wild cat don't meet unless it is under artificial, human contrived conditions. I have a page on lion vs tiger that is also comprehensive in its own right: Lion vs Tiger. This page has lots more lion vs tiger information and it has been carefully collated and researched.

Except for this introduction by me, the page was written and prepared by Braddah Keala who lives in Hawaii. Thank you Braddah. I think he is the world's expert on the lion vs tiger debate. I think it is fair to say that Braddah favours the lion in a lion versus tiger fight but he is fair in his assessment. You will see that from the large amounts of historical information presented below which favours the lion.

Note: there are many links below. Over the intervening 10 year some have failed which is normal because webpages are deleted from time to time. It remains an excellent body of work nonetheless.

This is what Braddah says:

I think the following information and links are a proven indication that the lion will never be just a push over if the fight is on steady ground. Check these out. I put together my own summary for my personal use of the lion's side, here...It concerns the ideas of  Expert’s, Trainer’s, Tamer’s, Owner’s, Zoologist’s Opinion’s on Lion vs tiger’s... Braddah Keala ^_^ (Hawaii, USA)

Pictures

First, here are some pictures of lions fighting tigers provided by Braddah. I would like to claim fair use for the publication of these pictures here on educational grounds. If anyone has a problem with these pictures being published here please tell me and I'll delete if your arguments are sound. Thank you.

Notes

Then I would like present a list of notes and links provided by Braddah Keala. This is a long page! This shows how comprehensively Braddah has collated the information. Note: over time some of these links will become dead. I can't do anything about that, sorry.

Lee Young Phil said there were a few tiger and lion fights staged and recorded. And only one in which the female tiger fought the lioness was aired… with harsh words by the Korean narrator saying, the lion was no match, yet it was a 50/50 fight with the tiger bleeding to death. Also saying the films were edited an spliced in favor of the tiger, which if there were more than a few male fight’s recorded, why weren't the others ever shown? It is highly concluded the male lion’s won all, and the videos were destroyed due to cultural idealism of the Koreans. Here’s the other alibi to that same fight…

Historical Artifacts and Sculptures

These are mostly from museums, portraying the lion winning against the tiger and each has a back story if you care to look them up. Apparently they would have to have seen the incident, to etch it or sculpture it and these are from different people from Rome, to India, to Britain, to China all portraying the same thing the lion winning.

This tiger was captured in India and went against a lion after being in captivity for only few days. Don't tell me that these few days changed the tiger's behavior in which it could not deliver a fatal neck bite. It was the tiger's fight and he knew it. He sprang at the staggering lion, took a fearful chop on the nose without flinching and set his teeth into the African's hairy throat. They wrestled desperately, and the lion's heavy mane saved him from suffocation. Great mouthfuls of long coarse hair catching in the Tiger's teeth not only preventing him from getting a death grip, but so interfered with his with his respiration that he had to release the hold, whereupon the Lion swatted him with a tremendous uppercut and sent him tumbling twenty feet away.

The lion's mane, not possessed by the female, is evidently such a weapon of defense; it is a excellent means of protection against the bites which the male lions try to inflict on each other's necks when fighting for the females; consequently those males with the strongest manes have the greatest advantage in the sexual struggle. For the next couple of minutes each struggled and strained for an advantage, but Bobby's hold was so tenacious that they only succeeded in twisting a little. With the cameras continuing to grind and getting nothing but a little harmless tug of war… Energy spent, the exhausted Bobby tried to roll away from Caesar, but Caesar's hold now was as firm as Bobby's which had been on his mane. Seeing this turn in affairs, I dashed into the cage. Already Caesar's jaws had crunched Bobby's neck and when I got there Caesar was shaking Bobby's limp, bloody head and throat from side to side. Bobby's eyes were turning stary. He was dead and it was only two minutes since I had dashed the ammonia into his face. I was keenly sorry that I had done it, but in thinking it over I became convinced that my part had been negligible. The lion is frequently the
superior; he doubtless would have been the winner in this case no matter what I had done.”

If so, it is conceivable that a single male lion attacked by a pack of hyenas could reduce injury with the help of its mane. Manes protect males in interaspecific in other species. The lion's mane, not possessed by the female, is evidently such a weapon of defense; it is a excellent means of protection against the bites which the male lions try to inflict on each others necks when fighting for the females; consequently those males with the strongest manes have the greatest advantage in the sexual struggle. Male lions are the only cats with manes. This collar of long, thick hair covers the head, except the face, and the neck down to the shoulders and chest. The mane plays an important role in the lion’s life. Male lions are larger than females and possess a voluminous mane which contrast with the sleek pelage on other parts of the body… The distinctive colors and sizes of manes may also help animals to identify individuals. An important secondary function of the mane is one of protection during fights. The dense mat of hair absorbs blows and harmlessly tangles claws in a part of the body towards which most social contact is directed; bites too, may leave an opponent with a mouth full of hair rather than skin. ~The Serengeti Lion A Study of Predator-Prey Relations Wildlife Behavior and Ecology series.

There is no direct evidence, but if we examine the probabilities in the case of a confrontation between the two some inferences can be drawn. In a fight would de unable to get close to the vital joint of a lion’s neck because of his thick mane, but the tiger is vulnerable to the lion. The film showed that the tiger was at an immediate disadvantage. Tigers use a throat grip as their primary means of killing and the lion's thick protective mane prevented the tiger gaining a hold on the throat joint. On the other hand, the tiger had no special protection, so was vulnerable to attack. In this fight, the tiger was killed. In any inter-species confrontation lions would also have the advantage of the who pride. But in my opinion a tiger is no match even for a single lion of equal strength. Now, as to a lion and tiger, I should say that the tiger is the more powerful of the two. At the same time, it is more cowardly, has more of the slinking nature of the cat, and is more treacherous. I believe I’m fully qualified to state, as I’ve had them both on me. I bear the teeth marks of a lion that shut his jaws tight on my legs. But it isn’t the teeth of the big cats trainers fear so much. It is the claws, being hooked, tear out the flesh and sinew as they are withdrawn. When a lion goes at a trainer he starts right towards him, with no subterfuge, mouth open and tail as stiff as a poker. A tiger cringes and crawls until he makes his spring. In a fair fight it would be hard to guess which animal would come off victor, and much would depend, I think on the one that got the first good hold. The lion also is protected around the neck by the heavy mane, which is an advantage. ~George Conklln, “Adventures With a Circus”

Roman Arenas

Caspian tiger's closest genotype, were Siberian tigers by only a fraction off their DNA. So in term's scientist have concluded, they were imported from Siberia and fought with the Barbary lion.

There's only one source of all the story's that has branched out for a victory of the tiger's side, over the lion in the gladiator event's. It was a man named Martial Peters who saw a tiger kill a lion in the arena. Every time you here tiger's invaribly won, or the tiger won is manipulated to have been every match... but every one unbeknownst they are only quoting Martial Peters, but they ignore his what he says  that it was very unexpected and it was a rarity to see a tiger win, meaning lions were usally the dominant animal. That's absolutely the only account on hand that date's that far back for the tiger's side, which were blown out of porportion's of claiming that was the usual outcome.

On the other hand there are over 15 historical artifacts an over 10 remnants and scriptures, that explain the lion was the usual victor in the gladitorial events here...

1. “Next, the arena was lowered to feature combat between them as lions tore apart tigers, and went up against bears, leopards against wolves. It goes without saying that the Romans had never heard of animal rights.” ~Ken Spiro; WorldPerfect

2. “The amphitheatre had grown so still, that the clear melody of the flute was distinctly audible over the whole vast space. As soon as the disturbance ceased, the king of the beast, apparently untroubled by the new visitor, returned to his food. But the cowardice, peculiar to nocturnal beasts in the daylight, awoke in the tiger. He beheld in the shrieking multitude friends of the flute-player, and seeing the lion eating, seized the nearest piece of meat. But with a single bound the lion sprang forward, roaring loudly, to defend his property. The
tiger’s claws clutched the lion’s and a fierce struggle began. The lion aimed terrible blows at his antagonist, which the tiger avoided with marvelous skill; the tiger’s teeth seized the lion’s mane, but at the same instant the latter tore off with his claws from the upper
part of the tiger’s head half the skin, from which an eat and a broad trail of blood upon the sand, the tiger returned to his cage, where he howled piteously. The grating was raised, and soon only a faint whining was audible. Either the animal was dying, or the keepers had
stupefied him to be able to cure him. The lion stood fiercely over his prey, which no one now disputed.” ~Antinous; a Romance of Ancient Rome

How do cats see us?

How do cats see us? This is a question that crosses my mind quite often. When I talk to my cat, what does she understand? How does she relate to the sounds I make, the words I say? We see a cat, what does she see? How do cats see us? This is a question that crosses the minds of many people, I am sure.

In this article I am not referring to how cats see us visually i.e. what is their eyesight like? I am asking how they perceive us: as cats or another creature or they have no perception of us as a certain type of animal.

Halle Bailey with her new grey tabby cat wearing an enormous collar. Photo: her Instagram page.
Halle Bailey with her new grey tabby cat wearing an enormous collar. Photo: her Instagram page.

There are a number of clues which lead us towards an answer although we will never be absolutely sure because only the individual (cat or human) knows what is happening inside their head (sometimes).

And it needs to said that the evidence points to the fact that cats are not self-aware. They don't see themselves as cats. They don't recognise themselves in a mirror. This supports the view that cats don't see us as 'humans' or another animal. They just see us as a provider of food, warmth and security. If they can't see themselves as individuals, they won't be able to see people as a different species of animal. In fact, cats don't recognise the concept of animal species.

RELATED: Can cats be self-conscious?

A mother cat will repeatedly lick her young (and a father cat, let's not leave out the males) in the early days of a kitten's life. When the kitten is grown up and looked after by a human "owner" (I prefer the word 'caregiver') the person strokes the cat. Stroking feels like licking to a cat.

A cat will sometimes ask for this attention. My cat rolls over on the ground and waits to be stroked and a stray cat, Timmy, turns over on his back for the same treatment. At this time, it would seem that our cats are seeing us as a mother cat.

Do they see us as cats or humans? Obviously, we look different to their real mother and father. Cats, in my view, do not ask the question, why does this person/animal look different to my mother? They don't even raise the query as to why we as people look so very different to a cat.

They simply accept us a mother/father cat, looking beyond the appearance or ignoring the appearance. It is humans who are all wrapped up in appearance, look at the consumer society, dog breeding and to a lesser extent cat breeding.

Cats don't think, "I am beautiful", if they are a fantastic purebred pedigree cat. Their looks are irrelevant to them. And this can be carried forward in answering the question, "How do cats see us?" They see us a parenting animal that acts like a cat.

I have another page on this topic in which I address it in a different way. Please click on this link to read it.

How do cats see us when we talk to them, sometimes in a strange baby language (cats are better than babies)? Well, they don't understand the language but they do understand the body language, our actions and the baby sounds that we make.

Just as we understand the sounds and actions they make. It is not always completely clear what a cat wants but we can normally find out pretty quickly. Once again, they don't analyze the sound that we make to communicate with them; they instinctively understand or not.

In other words, their perception is not colored by questions like, "I can't understand this person", or "he's not making any sense", or "he speaks in a foreign language." They just understand or not and we will communicate in various ways until our cat understands and that will become apparent to us.

The relationship is very like that between two people who speak completely different languages, who are tolerant of each other and the limitations of their communication and who use crude instinctive sign language to convey what they mean - this works just fine.

One other thing, cats don't need or want to face us when we talk to them. This seems to be for two reasons (1) cats don't like eye contact and (2) their ears can swivel so they just turn their ears rather than their head. This indicates that they are not reading human facial expressions to interpret communication. They are more interested in the quality of the sound and what it means in context.

So, bottom line, in answering the question, "How do cats see us?", they don't ask the question, "How do humans see us". They just live instinctively in an unselfconscious way and relate to us as cats who are their parents - surrogate mothers. That is why the domestic cat is a perpetual kitten. Once they become truly feral, they become wild cats.

Tips for when your cat is biting or scratching humans

Here are some quick thoughts about domestic cat scratches and bites. When your cat is biting or scratching humans, including yourself, and if it goes on in a consistent manner, major damage can be done to the relationship. It is the emotional connection between the person and the cat which is chipped away. It can get to the point where there is a breakdown in that relationship. This can, in turn, lead to the cat being given up to a rescue centre. Or simply abandoned. That happens too often. Or as the relationship deteriorates, the cat become more anxious and more likely to bite or scratch in defense. A downward spiral.

Unwanted feline aggression but what is the cause? You need to analyse.
Unwanted feline aggression but what is the cause? You need to analyse. Pic in the public domain.

Analysis through observation and thought required

If the person living with a cat is the kind of person who would abandon their cat under these circumstances, then this article is probably useless because it requires some effort to rectify the problem. It can require some detective work and reflection on what you are doing.

Unpredictable aggression or a pattern?

You might think that your cat bites and scratches you and other people in the home unpredictably, out of the blue and randomly. You might put this down to your cat becoming rogue and simply behaving badly. This won't happen. There will be a natural reason. It is just finding it. And invariably the cause will be with human behavior in one way or another.

Medical issues?

The first tip is to try and step back and not think emotionally (damned cat!) about it but to analyse the situation to get to the bottom of it. The professionals always say that you should check that your cat is in good health and not feeling pain or discomfort under certain circumstances before you go to the next step in the analysis.

This is because cats are stressed by pain. And then when they are touched or picked up the pain is probably exacerbated. They interpret this as the person picking them up causing the pain. They strike out at that person in defence; defensive aggression, but the person picking up the cat doesn't realise it.

A cat might be injured, if they are indoor/outdoor cats, on their flank or on one of their legs. You can't see it because the injury is covered by fur e.g., if there is a broken bone. It hurts when they are picked up. Or they are ill with a disease that shows no immediate apparent symptoms. This might be cancer for example.

You've got to have a good look at your cat's health and rule out the medical issues that might be present.

When does the biting and scratching occur?

The next stage is to see whether your cat's aggression occurs at certain times of the day. You are looking for a pattern of behaviour. Your cat has body rhythms (circadian rhythms) just like people. They will be more active at certain times of the day than others. During those more active times they will need to release their energy. This would normally be in the form of hunting. The substitute for hunting, for indoor cats, is energetic playtime.

So perhaps, your cat jumps at your ankles in the late afternoon when you are pottering around in bare feet. This is the time when she would be outside hunting if she was allowed outside. She finds some object to hunt and it happens to be your ankles. Her body rhythms drive her to be active at dusk.

You can take proactive steps to meet her desire to be active and hunt at those times by playing with her instead. That should stop attacks on your ankles.

Play in the world of cats is not a luxury but a necessity. Particularly so for full-time indoor cats. It is something which I feel most cat caregivers don't give enough time to. I am poor at it myself. It is one way traffic really from the caregiver to the cat. The cat is thoroughly enjoying it and the human is discharging their responsibilities but rarely do people enjoy playing with their cat and certainly not to the same extent that their cat enjoys it. This is why humans don't instigate play sessions enough from the cat's perspective.

Where does the aggression take place?

And your analysis should look at, if applicable, where this aggression takes place. It may, for example, take place after your cat has been looking out the window and seen an intruding cat on her territory. This is territory outside the home which she might never use but from the cat's perspective it is her 'home range' nonetheless.

A stranger on it is an invading cat. The resident cat should chase the cat away but they can't do it. Therefore, they have to be aggressive towards their human caregiver instead. This is normally described as redirected aggression or displaced aggression. The human is the innocent bystander under the circumstances. So, this analysis will help you find out whether the aggression is linked to the location where the aggression takes place.

Play turns to hunting hands?

Play sessions with cats can develop into aggressive sessions. I guess everybody knows that by now. There is a limit to how much roughhousing you can deliver to a domestic cat before the reactive behaviour of the cat becomes frankly dangerous and harmful to the person especially if hands are used inappropriately. This is overstimulation and petting becoming provocative from the cat's standpoint. It is described as 'putting your hands in the blender'.

Trim nails

Another thing you can do is to keep your cat's nails trimmed. And you should train your cat not to see your hands as toys. That means using a cat tease to play with your cat rather than thrusting your hand into the blender as mentioned.

Defensive aggression from timid cat?

Some cats are going to be timid and some domestic cats are going to be more confident. Timid cats may feel more threatened under perhaps innocuous circumstances. And when threatened a timid cat might become an aggressive cat.

One way to avoid timid cats becoming defensive and aggressive is to allow them a space where they can hide or avoid others by climbing vertically. This means a hiding space on the ground and/or a vertical space high up to where they can retire to feel safe and to perhaps avoid the unwanted attentions of other cats, another cat or people in the home when it is a multi-person home and there's plenty of noise and where maybe one person is not so great in handling cats.

Tell me your tips please.

I hope these thoughts help someone and their cat.

Can cat fleas live on humans?

Flea bite on person. Photo: FCG/Shutterstock

No, cat fleas can't live on humans because there is not enough hair to protect them. They don't live on the scalp either. The human is simply unsuitable for a cat or dog flea. Although occasionally a person might be bitten on their feet or ankle by a cat flea. This might occur if fleas are in the carpet waiting to jump onto a cat, and instead they jump onto the feet of the cat's owner. And judging by some photos people occasionally get a rash of flea bites. They must live in or have visited places where there are hordes of fleas. So, fleas do enjoy a drink of human blood.

Humans are not a preferred host of C. felis (cat flea).

Owners of full-time indoor cats sometimes ask how their cat can get fleas if they live inside the home all the time. One way is for the homeowner to walk a cat flea into the home on their clothes. Or perhaps the family dog, if there is one, can walk fleas into the home. Flea comb your cat every day if you want to make sure she is flea-free.

Here is the above photo in realistic colour. It is shocking. I can hardly believe it.

RELATED: Flea treatments can kill or cause harm: please read the instructions and use caution.

Constant vigilance is the byword. But as you know you have to take a holistic approach: the whole house needs to be checked out and cleaned and not just the fur on your cat's back.

This is not feline attention seeking but feline friendship

Some people might say that this cat is seeking attention; feline 'attention seeking'. They might say that it is an example of unreasonable behavior. I don't see it that way. I simply see a cat who wants to be with this boy because they have a great relationship. The cat wants to be in contact with the boy. It's about reassurance and enjoyment. It's about a close relationship and this is the result.

Cats don't do homework
Cats don't do homework. Screenshot.

The homework is a side issue and unrecognised by the cat. From the boy's perspective his cat is slightly irritating at that point because he gets in the way of his homework. The cat does not recognise the fact that they are interfering with the carrying out of homework. It is not done deliberately by the cat; they don't see it as an issue because cats don't do these sorts of things.

It is another example of cats seeing humans as cats and being confused sometimes about human behavior as it does not fit feline behavior.

I guess this is because in the wild if a cat is apparently doing nothing then the other cat can go up to them and lie close to them. It is an example of the differences in human behaviour and cat behaviour. It's also a nice example of the kind of close relationship that kids can have with cats. You can see that the mother or father is filming it because the child turns towards the camera at the end and asks with his eyes whether the video can now stop and he can get on with his homework! The mother agrees because that is when the video ends
