5 Ragdoll kittens fully enjoy their first bath together (who said cats dislike water!)

Pearl is an attractive woman who loves Ragdoll cats. She has a successful TikTok account because of it. Her home is 'littered' with Ragdoll kittens. She probably loves Ragdoll kittens and who doesn't because they are gorgeous. In fact, her partner gave her a present of roses plus 6 more Ragdoll kittens (see pic below)! I find it remarkable. I have no idea how she is going to cope with so many cats in her home and I have serious concerns about it but it does make very interesting videos.

And here is her partner delivering 6 more of the beauties within a bunch of flowers. All for the cameras. Don't forget that all this would not happen but for the fact that Pearl has a TikTok page and she needs to make videos for it. It was Pearl's birthday and they are due to be married in four months according to the vide caption.

"This is all I wanted for my birthday," she said.

“This is what women really want when they say they want flowers.” Not sure she is speaking on behalf of women in general. No woman except her would want this. For me is screams: "Work!"

And in the one below we have 10 year old Ragdoll kittens being given their first bath and they love it, it seems to me. They fully accept it. They have no problem being in water up to their neck. Who said that cats don't like water?

@pearlsragdolls

I did in fact find somebody. It's exactly 4 months until our wedding 🤍

When you watch the video you see her pick up a Ragdoll kitten to place the kitten in the bath and totally in line with their description of being Ragdolls, the kitten's head flops back just like a plush toy.

The ragdoll cat is one of those rare breeds with a character which matches up to their name. They are very affable and pliable and accepting and that is probably why they accept being in water up to their neck.

I am a little concerned also with the fact that she's bathing them. They don't need bathing it seems to me. You only bathe a cat when they truly need it (e.g., toxic substance on their fur) because you remove the oils from a cat's body when you do this.

What you end up with is siblings temporarily being unable to recognise each other because they identify each other through their body odour.

I have a strong feeling that Pearl bathed her kittens in order to make a successful video which it is because according to TikTok it's been seen 47 million times! But don't forget that TikTok constantly replays the video on a loop and so these very high viewing figures from TikTok are artificially inflated.

A TikTok account does force people to make fresh videos all the time which can work against cat welfare. Just saying.

Which cat is more affectionate, a Maine Coon or a Ragdoll?

I've got to be a little bit irritated by the question in the title. Perhaps I shouldn't be doing this post which by the way is a cross post from another website. It's the kind of information people might like to have before adopting either a Maine Coon or a Ragdoll or perhaps another cat breed.

But the question is a little bit misguided in my view. Although I have strong views on this sort of thing. The point is this: each individual cat of whatever breed they come from has their own individual personality. It is therefore sometimes unhelpful to say all the cats of one breed have the same personality.

That said, the Ragdoll would probably be described as the more affectionate of these two breeds because they are selectively bred to be very laid-back and indoor cats almost. They are calm and gentle and affable. This translates to affection. No other breed is specifically bred to have a particular character i.e. laid back and floppy (like a ragdoll toy).

But, that said, Maine Coon cats can also be very affectionate although a person who I rely upon to describe cat breed personalities, Gloria Stephens, a cat show judge and breeder herself, and by the way a Maine Coon cat owner, says that the Maine Coon cat can be somewhat independent and not necessarily a lap cat.

This hints at the fact that the Maine Coon is a little bit more independent-minded than the Ragdoll which lends itself to believing that the Ragdoll is the more affectionate of the two.

Personally, I would go to the breeder and check out the kittens and let the kitten choose you. You will decide yourself once you interact with Maine Coon kittens and Ragdoll kittens as to which individual kitten is more affectionate for you.

Sometimes kittens and cats are attracted to a particular person so the affection can be directed at you, the person asking this question! There is such as thing a chemistry.

There is no better way than meeting the cats. It is a 'must' really.

Two Ragdoll cats go missing INSIDE their home!

Yep, this is an example of how domestic cats can genuinely go missing even when they are full-time indoor cats and they have not escaped to the outside. It happened to me once. You're convinced that your cat has escaped the home and that you'll never see them again. You search frantically for what seems like ages and scratch your head to try and figure out where your cat or cats are.

You then finally find your cat or cats tucked away in a place that you never imagined they'd be. That happened to me when I fostered a little tabby kitten who grew up to became my best friend. He'd placed himself inside the double-bed storage area under the mattress.

Zara with her Ragdolls

In the case of Love Island's Zara McDermott, her cats were hidden inside an electrical cupboard in the basement with the door jammed shut!

Zara said: "I just had a near mental breakdown because I home and I couldn't find the cats anywhere, I spent 20 mins searching every room and cupboard for them and I couldn't see them.

"Anyway, long story short my brother calmed me down on the phone and I started searching every part of the house top to bottom, I found them inside an electrical cupboard in the basement...

Ragdolls cats go missing inside their home

My guess? The cats found a nice cosy cubby-hole to snooze away some hours while Zara was away and the door shut because the cats knocked the broom that was in there.

Zara was beside herself with anxiety believing that she had lost her beloved Ragdolls. I understand her feelings. It happened to me as mentioned but my cat - who's on my legs as I type this - is a humble moggie. Just as good though.

Reason why Ragdoll cats have blue eyes

Ben in his video below explains why Ragdoll cats have blue eyes for the standpoint of physics. But it isn't just Ragdoll cats which have blue eyes. Kittens have too and Siamese must have blue eyes and other breeds are allowed to have blue eyes under their breed standards.

The physics behind the blue eyes of cats including the Ragdoll
The physics behind the blue eyes of cats including the Ragdoll. Screenshot.

The Ragdoll breed standard states that Ragdolls must have blue eyes. EYES: large, vivid blue ovals. Wide set and moderately slanted, complementing wedge.

And the anatomical reason and the physics behind the blue colour of their eyes is explained in the video below. The same reason applies to kittens when their eye colour is developing but not yet developed.

Blue eyes caused by scattering of blue light not pigment
Blue eyes caused by scattering of blue light not pigment. Image: MikeB

And the same physics applies to the blue sky. The color blue has a shorter wavelength than the other colours and it is scattered more by the particles in the air which is why the sky is blue.

RELATED: Why are kittens’ eyes blue?

It is this scattering of blue light and not the other colours which accounts for blue eyes in Ragdoll cats.

Pictures of 154 purebred cats smuggled by the sea route from mainland China to Taiwan

I have written about this before but I did not have these pictures available to me at that time. The two pictures are worth a thousand words because they give a very clear idea what it was like to smuggle these purebred cats across the sea from mainland China to Taiwan.

Pictures of 154 purebred cats smuggled by the sea route from mainland China to Taiwan

Pictures of 154 purebred cats smuggled by the sea route from mainland China to Taiwan
Pictures of 154 purebred cats smuggled by the sea route from mainland China to Taiwan. Picture: Coastguard admin.

This was a valuable cargo which was entirely destroyed by the authorities. What you see is part of it but in all 154 purebred cats including Ragdolls and Bengal cats was seized by the authorities and killed because of bio-security risks. They say that the cats may have had diseases which might present a problem to the human population in Taiwan into the future. They couldn't risk these diseases being spread to people. They didn't consider quarantine which I think would have been a more humane method. In other words, they could have quarantined them for long enough for any disease to be cleared and ticked off.

CLICK FOR THE EARLIER ARTICLE

There was outrage as predicted when the news leaked out to the population. In response, Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan, responded as a cat lover. She lives with two cats herself. She hoped that in the future a more humane method would be chosen to deal with smuggled cats but in the meantime, she supported the coastguard and the authorities for killing the cats. Reading between the lines I would say that she was deeply disturbed by the killing but she felt that she had to support the authorities for obvious reasons.

Click this for another story about euthanasia: Educated person distributes letter threatening euthanasia of feral cats in neighbourhood

There were calls to amend the existing laws so that this sort of killing wouldn't happen again and the president of the country called for amendments to the existing laws so that these situations could be handled "with the spirit of humanity" to use her words.

The cargo, in all, has been valued at around US$357,000 or 10 million Taiwanese dollars. On monetary value alone, it would have been wise to have found an alternative method to killing them. These were sentient beings and they could have found homes for them. The money raised could have been ploughed back into animal rescue in Taiwan to save lives. It is very easy to destroy something, even sentient, beings but much harder to find the more difficult route and stick to it, even if it is frustrating, troublesome but far more humane.

Beautiful baby loves a cuddle from an equally beautiful Ragdoll kitten

Beautiful baby loves a cuddle from a beautiful Ragdoll kitten
Beautiful baby loves a cuddle from a beautiful Ragdoll kitten

Beauty is all around in this TikTok video. The baby's mother likes her Ragdolls to be close to her baby and they are great together. They make a charming video and the baby loves the cat next to her. The experts say that it is good for a baby to be in close contact with a cat. It helps to moderate the child's reaction to allergens and makes them more tolerant of allergens in the future. There is also the theory that humans lead lives that are too clean. It can lead to children losing their natural robustness. I love the smile on this happy child's face as the cat brushes against her cheek. She loves the feel of the cat's luxurious fur against her face. I think the child's name is Blossom.

Ragdoll Kittens are available again from 'American Ragdoll Kitten'

I wouldn't normally do this and in fact this is perhaps the first time that I have done it but I'm going to promote an American Ragdoll breeder - American Ragdoll Kitten - because they emailed me. They saw the potential for emailing me which tickled my fancy! I don't know how good or bad they are but they look good. Their website looks good. You can click on the link below to go to their website. As they say, Ragdoll kittens are available again. It is that time of year for them.

When I think of the Ragdoll cat, I think of a cat which is probably the best suited to modern life. They are perhaps the only purebred cat where the breeder is concerned about both appearance and a specific character. Normally the appearance is 90% of the task for a breeder but in respect of the Ragdoll it is a 50-50 situation.

The Ragdoll is built around their laid-back character. They pretty well have to have this character to be described as a Ragdoll. Which is why I think they should be suited to living full-time in the home which is a growing trend for various reasons, one of which is because more people live in the urban environment.

Although Covid has changed that, certainly in the UK where a lot of people have moved out of the country to work from home on a permanent or semipermanent basis. This may also be relationship between human and cat for the better it should be said.

The Ragdoll is in the top 5 most popular cat breeds and is gaining in popularity. It is a better cat than the flat-faced Persian which topped the popularity charts for years. Click the link below to read much more:

Jacqueline Fernandez meditates on the balcony of her apartment in Mumbai with Bengal cat in background

Jacqueline Fernandez and her white Persian showing tear staining due to tear duct overflow. Photo: Instagram.

Jacqueline Fernandez is a Bollywood star born in Sri Lanka and a former model. She likes animals. Thank God for that because the more celebrity animal lovers we have on the planet the greater likelihood that humankind can gradually start to live in harmony with animals. We are very far from that at present. Jacqueline Fernandez lives with four cats we are told. I know that one of them is almost certainly a Bengal cat (see below) - the one you see in the photograph on her Instagram page - another is a pointed Persian A.K.A. a Himalayan cat and a third is an all-white Persian. Both flat-faced with associated health issues such as tear duct overflow.

Fernandez mediating on her flat balcony with her Bengal cat. Photo: Instagram.

The Persian is a contemporary bred cat with a flat-face. They are called "punch-faced Persians" in India because it is as if they have been punched. Not a great description I would hasten to add. Perhaps the description might, just might, encourage cat abuse. But a strong counter to that is Jacqueline Fernandez and her love of animals and cats.

Yoda, I believe, a pointed Persian with a flat-face (Himalayan). Photo: Instagram.

Of the four cats that she lives with, one is also a Ragdoll in my opinion. The cat appears to be a seal-pointed Ragdoll. I don't know the breed of the fourth cat. But please read more about that if you want to by clicking on this link which takes you to the main website.

Choosing a Pet Cat

Matching a pet with the owner's personality can be quite important in minimizing the risk of abandonment.  Incidentally, I don't like the terms, "pet" and "owner". I prefer "animal companion" and "cat caretaker" or "cat guardian" (if the animal is a cat).

There are too many cats and dogs being abandoned.  Doris Day once said that there were 12 million cats and dogs put to sleep each year in the USA. Whatever the number is, it is high, very high and a shock. I am sure there are similar percentages of domestic animals euthanized in Europe. It is just not spoken about so much.

People need to reflect more on their reasons for adopting a companion animal before proceeding. The reasons should be legitimate meaning not frivolous. You don't get a pet to match the decor of the house or as a Christmas present for the children.

People should also swot up on companion animal care and the costs. There should almost be an obligatory cooling off period between saying, "let's get a pet!" and actually getting it. That simple act would save millions of cats and dogs I suspect.

Choosing a pet cat begs the question whether you would like a purebred cat or a moggie. Purebreds are relatively rare. Moggies are relatively abundant. If you want to help get a moggie. And get a black one as they live longer.

Some individual cats are more passive and more able to cope with being alone. Some are more able to deal with full-time indoor living and living in small spaces. You will find that some breeders say that the Persian must be a full-time indoor cat. The fur is too long to go out in the mud! The Russian Blue is a delicate, reserved cat that likes the security of a home. The Sphynx is without clothes so needs to be in the warm and out of the sun to avoid the risk of skin problems. This is also a smart cat so will interact well if you like that.

The Ragdoll is laid back. More active cats are the wild cat hybrids, Bengal and Savannah. You'll need to be around for these cats and provide input. Actually all cats require input. It is a fallacy to think that cats are independent. They are self-contained but dependent on us for just about everything.

If you don't like noisy cats don't acquire a Siamese or associated cat breed e.g. Oriental SH. They are known for their vocal skills. The British Shorthair has an almost silent voice.

I think, though that you will find some individual cats of any breed or no-breed more cautious and reserved than others. If you want a cat that is fairly static and happy to curl up,  a more cautious cat will oblige. The more confident male cat is more likely to be unhappy with a lack of space and input from us. He is more likely to want to go out and get into trouble.

Ragdoll Cats Do Go Limp

Ragdoll cat
My lovely Ragdoll cat :) He's 1 year old - by Mah² (Flickr)
My friend, Ian, has the most friendly and true to his breed cat named Bear. Bear is about 27 pounds, a hefty cat with stunningly clear blue eyes. The first time I ever picked up bear he immediately went limp.

Ian just nonchalantly told me "Yeah all of them did that when we had kittens, even his mom did that when we got her at the shelter."

Bear is my favorite cat, he is so fuzzy and such a Ragdoll cat that he has changed me forever, I am now a cat person...Britteny (Pheonix, USA)

Prevention is the best medicine for your pet's health.

Thanks Britteny for your contribution based on personal experience. The myth surrounding the Ragdoll cat is immense. It was created by Ann Baker the founder. Or was it all true?

Your first hand experiences of a Ragdoll cat that you know at least confirms that this cat breed can be limp and laid back, fitting in nicely with the usual description of this cat breed's character.

Note: the Ragdoll in the photo is not the Ragdoll described in the text.

Ragdoll Cat Lover Gifts

Ragdoll cat lover gifts are popular because the Ragdoll is popular. According to my very long standing poll (over three years) the Ragdoll is the 5th most popular cat out of about 70 cat breeds polled.

The popularity probably comes from this cat breed's fluffy, large body and laid back character - two major attributes desired by cat keepers. The Maine Coon is the world's most popular domestic cat breed on my reckoning and that breed has similar characteristics although it is longer and skinnier in the body. It is also larger overall; the largest pure domestic cat in the world (excluding the wildcat hybrids).

OK lets see some Ragdoll cat lover gifts. I have chosen two sources but there are many more I am sure. These are all for the North American market place as most of the visitors to PoC (Pictures of Cats.org) are from that region.

Ragdoll Cats Go Limp

Ragdoll cats go limp when you pick them up. It's lies, I tell you, all lies...Well lets say it's a bit of fiction. Yes, they can, and some do, relax, when you picked them up but no more than any other laid back cat and there are many cats like that. For instance I have a stray cat friend, Timmy. He is a complete cutey when it comes to picking him up, combing him or prodding him to check his health (good by the way). It is just his character. Ragdoll cats are generally known to be a laid back breed of cat but one cannot generalise about cats, humans or any animal as there will be individual characteristics which will override any background character.

Ragdoll Kittens suckling

Ragdolls I guess are laid back but there are a number of mysteries surrounding this breed of cat. This is probably because of the originator of the Ragdoll breed, Ann Baker, seems to have surrounded the early years in a bit of mystery, perhaps deliberately. Even the experts have to admit that the exact circumstances of the origins of this breed are vague. It wouldn't be the first time an origin of a breed was vague, though. For instance Gloria Stephenson in Legacy of the Cat, a fine book, refers to four different versions of the origin. You can see my detailed version on the Ragdoll Cat Information page.

So, Ragdolls are generally calm, docile, quiet cats and, of course, easy to handle. They would seem to be the ideal indoor-all-the-time cat, the modern cat really. Gloria makes a good point. Bearing in mind their size (they are the second largest on my reckoning amongst the genuine domestic cat breeds - excluding the wild cat hybrids - see largest domestic cat breed) it is lucky that they are docile and have sweet dispositions! Ragdoll cats go limp sometimes.

Ragdoll Cat Behavior

Ragdoll cat
Ragdoll cat photo copyright Helmi Flick

Ragdoll Cat Behavior is said to be so particular and unusual, they named the cat after it. But is the behavior really as stated? Or is there a bit of poetic license involved to promote and define this well liked cat breed?

I don't want to break the myths and stories surrounding this cat breed but in the interests of fair play and honesty, this cat is in my opinion like many other cats, both purebred and Moggie, in terms of temperament.

Sure, Ragdoll Cat behavior may be more lad back than some other breeds such as the Modern Siamese (more vocal and 'intelligent') or the wildcat hybrids such as the Chausie and Bengal, which are more active but this doesn't mean the Ragdoll doesn't behave like a typical domestic cat. This includes all the usual likes and dislikes such as play, company and attention from us.

The CFA describes this cat breed as "floor cats" and not jumpers. This, I can understand as my Moggie is exactly that. My previous cat was half NFC (Norwegian Forest Cat) and was a great jumper. What I am saying is that a moggie can be as docile as a Ragdoll and many are. The docile nature of this cat breed is not unique to the Ragdoll cat.Ragdoll cat

I would think it fair to say that on average, all other influences being equal (such as the cat's upbringing and whether she is well socialized), Ragdoll Cat behavior is probably more laid back than most other breeds.

They are quite large cats too so you get the combination of size and even temperament, which is an attractive combination to some people.

The idea that it is unusual that this cat goes limp when you pick her up is, you know, a bit of an exaggeration. A lot of cats in the right mood go soft and limp when picked up. It is probably a reflection of the classic response of a kitten being picked up by the scruff of the neck by the mother. The kitten will automatically go limp and not struggle to allow the mother to carry the kitten to safety.

As people who keep cats are seen as 'parent cats' by the cat and as the keeping of domestic cats keeps the cat, psychologically, as a kitten, the response to being picked up will be as described.

One final point, there are many influences that affect cat behavior and the variation in behavior from cat to cat is probably greater than the variation in behavior between cat breeds and superimposed into that is how well the cat has been raised by the cat breeder. Ragdoll cats are purebred cats so it is almost certain that the life of a Ragdoll started in a cat breeder's cattery - how good was the cattery? I have posted an article called "cat behavior explained".

Cat Ragdoll rescue

Ragdoll cats
Cat Ragdoll rescue - not for these gorgeous cats photo copyright Helmi Flick of course.

If you are looking to adopt a purebred cat, Ragdoll rescue may be the way forward. Firstly, the Ragdoll cat is a fine cat. She is a large cat, one of the larger domestic cats. She is better suited to the full-time indoor life, which seems to be "the way" in the USA. I go on about indoor cats, I know, but it would be much better if, while humans are trying to make the world less hostile to the domestic cat, we allowed our cats out in outside enclosures. I just don't see it as natural and fair to keep a cat imprisoned.

Ragdolls are not totally placid cat furniture however. Although probably better suited to indoor living they are as inquisitive and as "naughty" (in the nicest possible way) as the next cat. And they shed and need frequent grooming (so fairly high maintenance really).

Cats are naturally inquisitive, hence the 9 lives idea. Their inquisitiveness gets them into trouble. When you block that natural instinctive desire to find things and to explore things by making the cat's environment completely bland as it will tend to be if keep indoors all the time, you take away a large part of the cat's life.

If the argument for imprisoning a cat is that it is dangerous to let her out (the only argument), then we shouldn't breed and keep cats until we can let them out without it being too dangerous.

Back to finding a cat and Ragdoll rescue. I've built some pages on rescue on the main site. There are a number of purebred rescue routes . You'll find a number of Yahoo Groups on the page linked. Yahoo groups require a bit more work because you have to join Yahoo and then the group. Then you have to email people and read emails to keep in the loop but I sense the rewards are there for those who do it.

Another indoor cat is the Persian (maybe this is a major reason why this cat breed is popular in the States). There are also a number Persian cat rescue routes both in the USA and the UK.

Ragdoll Cat
Cat, Ragdoll rescue - no not this one - loved and photographed with equal passion by Tom Poes photo copyright Tom Poes reproduced under creative commons license.

As for finding a cat and Ragdoll rescue here are some rescue operations:

The first is based in the UK and is called The United Kingdom Ragdoll Cat Community. It was founded in 2004 so it is well established. It gets listed top of the pile in a Google search - well done guys particularly Darren Farrow who looks after the website - nice work. This is a "real" website, active and full of real and interesting information.

If you are having difficulty coping in caring for your Raggie and are living in the UK, I'd definitely recommend this charity as the first port of call as they look very organized. In fact they are able to assist whatever the breed of cat as they can call upon a network of contacts in the cat rescue world.
The next is:
The British Ragdoll Cat Club ,which was founded in 1987 (very well established). This is an active club with 600 or more members. As part of their services they provide a rehoming and rescue service. Another must see site if you're looking to adopt a purebred cat, Ragdoll rescue through this club is a good option.

For the USA the best method is probably to use the general web portal site Petfinder.com as a lot of rescue centers are "affiliated" to this business by advertising their cats through the Petfinder website as they have the technology to do this. One such rescue operation using Petfinder is Ragdoll Rescue USA. This seems to be a fairly small or perhaps growing group of volunteers and they need more helpers (foster homes).

Since making this post I have another on Ragdoll cat rescue on the main website - it contains some more links.
