They got to know each other and are in a close relationship. The dog is timid and enjoys the kitten's company. The kitten is braver as they climb on top of the dog to rest and feel warm and secure.

Cat-sitter lied to cat owner about missing cat but didn't have to

NEWS AND COMMENT: Meagan Herrick, of Idaho, who goes by @meaganherrick on Tiktok decided to go on a holiday with her family and had a cat-sitter to look after their cat, Figgy, at home, while they were away. Unbeknownst to her, Figgy had jumped into their camper before they set off on their journey and when they arrived at the destination, there she/he was (we don't know the gender). Note: cats love to nose around and the activity surrounding the camper would have encouraged Figgy to jump and an investigate.

In the meantime, Herrick had not heard from her cat-sitter. No doubt she had asked the person to keep her in the loop and to update her on how Figgy was getting along. As she had not heard from the cat-sitter she sent a text message. But it was a trick text message asking how her kitty was getting along as you can see from the screenshot from the text communication.

Surprisingly, her cat sitter replied: "Great! just checking on her, she's so sweet."

In response, Herrick replied with a photo of Figgy curled up in their camper. No doubt this caused acute embarrassment with the cat sitter. I think, on reflection, that Herrick's text was a little cruel. In theory she did not have to lie because Figgy was not lost although she didn't know it. If the cat sitter was totally confident in her work, she could have askes Herrick if Figgy was with her. Moral: a cat sitter should check that the cat is in her sight when the owners leave! :) 

People are commenting on the story as they would. I've got to be sympathetic to the cat sitter. He or she probably thought that Figgy had disappeared while they were in charge of looking after her (I've decided that she is female).

And because they thought she had disappeared they tried to cover their tracks while they were looking for her. No doubt they were in a bit of a panic and hoped that Figgy would turn up before the Herrick family returned. I can totally understand this and therefore the lie is not as bad as it first looks.

It should be said, as a postscript, that leaving your cat with a cat sitter while you go on holiday is potentially a dangerous thing to do. You are leaving a member of your family sometimes with a stranger who might have been recommended to you. But you don't fully know how good or bad they are at ensuring that your cat stays inside the home.

And because a stranger is in the home with your cat, your cat might be anxious. He or she is confronted with an unknown threat within their territory and this may force them to escape and not return. That's why you will see cat sitters losing their cats and it'll be a tragedy for the owners.

I suppose the moral of the story is to make sure that the person who carries out the cat-sitting duties is well-known to your cat and you (as being utterly reliable and sensible). This would seem to be absolutely essential. I would recommend never doing anything else. And if the person doesn't know your cat, they should get to know them before they do cat-sitting duties for you.

There are professional cat-sitters but once again they will be strangers initially, on the first sitting. No doubt they introduce themselves well before they begin cat sitting and being experienced, they probably know how to ensure that the cat in their charge does not disappear.

You can ruin a good holiday if your cat disappears while you are away. A final point: Figgy seems to have enjoyed his impromptu holiday so there won't be the need for a cat sitter the next time.

This is plain cruel. A woman placed the forepaws of both her cats on sticky paper which stuck to their paws. This feels very unsettling for a domestic cat as you can clearly see in the video. The cat's reaction is the reason why she did this and it is wrong.

It is essentially cruel. She should be ashamed of herself for abusing her cats to try and make her video popular. This happens so much these days. It stresses the cats. Abusive and ignorant cat owners are selling their souls to get those all-important hits to the bloody videos.

A study established the obvious: that these sorts of 'funny cat videos' - not funny for me - make a third of the cats anxious. That is not the objective of a responsible cat guardian. What do you think? Am I being unfair?

'Penguin Cat' is very obese (for a purpose?)

The 'Penguin Cat is so named because she likes to stand upright like a meerkat. Unusually, she holds the position for long periods. A domestic cat might do this because they simply like to do it. However, I would suggest that there will normally be a specific reason why a domestic cat likes to sit up on her haunches like this. 

In this instance it may be because she's obese. It may be more comfortable for her in this position. Also, it is apparent that if she lost weight she would no longer look like a penguin and this would totally undermine the reason why this cat is a celebrity on TikTok.

I don't want to overly criticise the owners but they should reduce their cat's weight if only for the benefit that it will bring in terms of health. Just like humans, obese cats can suffer associated health problems such as diabetes and arthritis because of the extra pressure on the joints.

I used to live with a three-legged cat and he very often took up the meerkat position particularly when asking for food. He did this because he had three legs. His back had become very strong to compensate for the loss of one leg as he had to pick up his body with his back muscles in order to move. And standing tall like this meant that he could get my attention more easily.

Dwarf cats also tend to stand up like this on two legs, using their tail and bottom as a stabiliser. Dwarf cats have short legs and therefore they lack height. I would suggest that they take up the meerkat position in order to get noticed, to make them taller. As I see it, there is a reason behind a cat taking up this position because it's unnatural.

You will see this position taken up in a more extreme sense when male cats are fighting over territory. You may have seen the video or the photographs on the Internet of domestic or feral cats looking like humans standing tall on two legs. But once again this is highly unusual.

As I'm sure you can guess, "Penguin Cat" is named like this because she looks like a penguin with her black-and-white coat and her stance. There is a distinct resemblance. It's made her a celebrity on TikTok. I just wonder whether the owners have decided to keep her obese in order to ensure that she takes up this upright stance. If I am right then the reason for it is the obesity.

This is the typical response when a domestic cat strongly feels that they must protect their food from their owner. It is not that uncommon. It has happened to me and my cat. Scenario: your cat is enjoying his food and you want to move the food perhaps or for some reason take it off him and he'll start growling. He may carry the food away to a secure place. It's just typical wild cat behaviour which is firmly embedded in the brain of domestic cats.

The players in the video on TikTok are Karter, the cat, Faith Lim, the woman and TikTok account holder and her boyfriend Max Chapman. The place is Melbourne, Australia. We don't know the background of the story but I suspect that they gave their cat the KFC and then videoed Karter while they tried to take it off him perhaps knowing that he would start growling. It is always amusing to see this kind of feline behaviour. It's a great reminder that ultimately, we live with a domestic cat whose wild traits are just below the surface.

KFC is perfectly okay for a cat in small amounts may be in big amounts! But it should not be part of their regular diet because it contains too much salt probably and it is not fully balanced. Commercially prepared cat food is complete and balanced. You should always look for the "complete and balanced" description on the label. Sorry for that little lecture at the end.

I hope that you enjoy the video. Another problem is the bones in KFC. Although there is quite a strong argument which states that cats should be allowed to chew on bones because this is what happens in the wild and it is good for their teeth and gums.

Would you flood out your home for TikTok social media success? And blame your cats!

This Singaporean man alleges through his TikTok video that his Russian Blue cats turned on the kitchen tap, I guess during the night, and flooded out is home. And he says that it is the second time it has happened! Are you as incredulous as me about the veracity of this statement? Some pretty extraordinary things would have to take place for it to happen.

The tap to his kitchen sink is turned anticlockwise from vertical through 90°. A cat would have to do that deliberately for some mysterious reason. Secondly, nearly all kitchen sinks have an overflow to take away excess water to stop flooding. That would have to be plugged in this instance. Thirdly, there would have to be a plug in the outlet otherwise the water would simply flow into the outlet and away to the drain. So, these three things need to be in place for what we see in the video to happen and a cat wood have had to start the whole process.

Personally, I don't believe it and therefore I have declared it to be a fake video because this guy has a craving for TikTok success. There is a massive craving among a lot of young people for social media success through videos. They will go to the ends of the world to achieve it including flooding their apartment. 

Maybe he thinks the water is not going to cause too much damage because he has a hard floor. I think he is incorrect because kitchen units are made of chipboard with laminated surfaces. Water seeps up into the chipboard and it expands causing the lamination to come off. You see bubbling in the lamination and the effect is spoiled.

And when you see the video, you will notice that this Singaporean guy is filming the flood while the kitchen sink tap is still running. In other words, the flooding is taking place while he's filming. He did not race towards the kitchen sink to turn it off in a mass panic. He just simply kept on filming and providing his commentary. That doesn't make sense to me. It hints or quite strongly implies to me that the whole video was constructed by him and he's blamed the cats to give it a feline flavour! What do you think? Please comment about this.

Do you think this is fun? I find the music a bit harsh. Actually I find the music very harsh and the whole video a bit gross really but I'm out of touch with the rest of the world, it seems to me. I'm sure the video is pretty popular. I don't know whether to be serious or jokey. This is meant to be a fun video. So I'm not meant to be serious about it, but look at the size of the cat. 

This is an obese cat and the owner has allowed this cat to become obese. We have to criticise the owner therefore. This kind of obesity is going to lead to health problems. You can't really in all good conscience make a funny cat video out of a cat's health problems. Can you? Is this part of the modern day trend of making very short funny cat videos based on cat abuse. Am I being too critical? Is that a misconception? 

Perhaps I just don't see the world like other people see it. I certainly don't see the world in the same way that a lot of young people in Asia see it. I think this video is from Asia where arguably there is a different attitude towards animals and the human-to-cat relationship. I would love people to comment tell me what they think about it.

Cat carries leash and harness to owner to ask to go for a walk

This cat really likes to go for a walk on a lead so much that she brings the harness and lead to her owner as a way of asking her to take her outside for a late night stroll. Unfortunately it was way too late because it was apparently 3 a.m. in the morning! What are they doing up at 3 a.m. in the morning? It doesn't matter, this is peak time for a domestic cat.

This is the middle of the day for this cat whose name is Arya. It's quite unusual for a cat to be leash trained effectively and obviously even more unusual for a cat to really like going for a walk on a leash.

The video is on the social media site TiKtoK where it has racked up 2.6 million views.

A lot of viewers are sympathetic towards Arya. They seem to be saying that her owner should have gone out at 3 a.m.! Yeh, I agree. If you live with a domestic cat you have to do a night shift sometimes!

One problem with leash training is that the harness, which is quite thick, replicates the effect of a product called the Thundershirt. This is a calming vest. It sort of immobilises cats and thick harnesses can immobilise cats to the point where they simply lie on the ground or they wobble while walking. So when you leash train your cat you have to overcome this aspect of the process as well as encouraging them to walk along with you rather than stopping and sitting or doing precisely as they please.

All that said, it is great to see a cat being leash trained because it's a way of overcoming the dangers of taking a cat outside. I don't know where this was made. It looks like either the Middle East or Asia. I think I favour something like Indonesia or Malaysia, but I am speculating wildly. Ayra is a dilute brown tabby and white with very faint markings.
