British Shorthair Cat Washington Breeder

I will list two British Shorthair cats situated in the state of Washington with a map for one of them:

Cheshirelady - TICA affiliated - located in Seattle. They went to Russia for their foundation Brit SH as she is pure European - I like that. Nice and genuine and not over bred.

The second is Remick a CFA affiliated cattery. They have ceased trading but will answer questions they say. They could be a decent starting point therefore. I don't know where in Washington they are situated.

British Shorhair Most Registered Cat Breed by GCCF

The British Shorthair has increased in popularity while the Persian has decreased over the past several years.

I present below a spreadsheet from the GCCF figures showing registrations. Numbers of registrations indicates popularity, indirectly. This is for the UK only, of course.

On my website I have a world popularity poll and the Brit SH is 9th. It is a very popular cat breed. The lower placing is due to the fact that most votes are from America, where the Maine Coon is the most popular. But America has the biggest cat market in the world by far some ten times bigger than in the UK.

British Shorthair Breed Council CFA

The British Shorthair breed council at the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA), the largest as far as I am aware is on this page of the internet. Breed councils set the standards. It is made up of breeders and experienced cat fancy people.

Mabledon British Shorthairs

There is no question that Mabledon British Shorthairs have been around for a good time judging by how Google presents search results. I have no idea how good they are,  however. Always visit a cattery. See this post or posts on some things to check at a cattery visit.

This is their website. They are located in Kent, England. This is in the south-east of England.  They don't give their address or ground phone number so they do protect their privacy. Wise of not? People need to know fairly accurately where the breeder is to gauge if to visit or not.

British Shorthair Cat Breeders Directory

In the UK you could do a lot worse than go to the British Shorthair Cat Club and look up their British Shorthair cat breeders directory.

Another British Club is the Southern British Shorthair Cat Club and they too have a British Shorthair cat breeders directory. There may be an overlap.

For the USA I would use the CFA breeder referral search page.

Another good USA resource for breeders is Breedlist.com. See this page for British Shorthairs. There are 47 listed as at the date of this post.

Buying a Bengal Cat

Buying a Bengal cat is like buying any cat really. OK you'll need to be aware of the characteristics of the Bengal cat - active and intelligent etc. but by and large it is about buying any purebred cat. I have a page and video of a comparison between the Bengal cat and the Exotic Shorthair. It is quite informative, I think you will find. This page on cat personality types might also help.

I would check out the health issues surrounding the Bengal cat but not be put off by them. It is just nice to know about potential pitfalls. Ask questions etc.

As to prices - check out this section of a Bengal cat page I built some time ago. Bengal cats are purebred cats and they will cost the same as any other purebred cat in general. You will be buying a "pet" (not a breeding cat). The contract will specify neutering and if you are in breach of contract damages will have to be paid (if you don't get away with it). Please don't break contracts.

Talking of contracts Wild Expressions in Canada have a nice simply written contract (between breeder and buyer) that tells you a lot about buying a Bengal cat. Please read it carefully it is very informative.

You'll need to know the coat types as well. If you'd like to read what other people think about the Bengal cat and their personal experiences this is a good start.

Penultimately, check out some champion superstar Bengal cats and feast your eyes. This is what they should look like.

Finally please read what Helmi Flick has to say about buying a high filial wildcat hybrid (if you are thinking about that - most Bengals are SBT though). Bengal Cat Florida

You live in Florida and are looking to adopt a Bengal cat. I have a well established page on Bengal Breeders in Florida with maps etc. This is the page.

One option worth exploring if you have the time is to join the Yahoo Group "bengalcatrescue · Bengal Rescue Network". This is a well subscribed group and quite quickly you will learn about the Bengal cat and possibly find a cat that needs re-homing. Although the cat might not be in Florida!

It is always preferable to find a new home for a Bengal cat that needs rescuing.

Bengal Cats Canada

You're looking for Bengal cat breeders in Canada. A general search will throw up some individual breeders and some directories.

This page is a nice example of a directory of Bengal cat breeders on one page.

The problem is that you will not know who the good ones are. There is no ranking system that might have been organised by the cat associations. You will have to select one that is as close as possible to you and go visit it! Helmi Flick the famous cat photographer says that it is the only way to buy a purebred cat from a breeder. I'd ask questions about genetic diseases in Bengal cats. And check out the facilities. Let the cat pick you.

I like the fact that they give an exact address - shows confidence. The Google map above goes right to the street.

Another sensible Bengal cat breeder who I would trust based on what they say on their website is WildExpressions.ca. They require a $250 deposit and of course you buy a cat companion (a pet) not a breeding cat (unless you contract for that and pay a lot more).

They are a small breeder (most are) based in Ontario and operate from 891 Old Highway 2, RR#2 Trenton. This is a map:

Templecat Shorthaired Birman

An original Birman as I can't find a picture of the Templecat shorthaired Birman. This photo taken by Hemi Flick.

The Templecat, a Shorthaired Birman is, surprisingly, a current breed and is an experimental breed in New Zealand. The picture above is a regular Birman cat. 

The Birman has a pointed and medium to long coat (not as long as the Persian cat). Can I find a picture of a Templecat or shorthaired Birman? Afraid not, well not quite. 

I think the small picture on the right here is a Templecat. This cat looks like a Birman and has short hair. However, photographs of this cat are few and far between and although the Templecat Shorthaired Birman is current it cannot be that active, it seems. Update: I have checked for a photo on Sept 9th, 2021, many years after I wrote this page and there are no photos of this breed. Not sure if it exists :) . Please comment if you know better.

The breed was created by mating a cinnamon spotted tabby cat, an Oriental cat, to the Birman. The Oriental shorthair cat is a fine boned elegant cat that is essentially a Modern Siamese cat with a wider range of coat types (see the picture below). On a simplistic level, I am surprised that a Birman was crossed with such a fine bone and one could say, gangly cat. 

The Birman is quite a solid cat. The tabby coat is the classic wild cat coat (see Scottish Wildcat), providing the best camouflage (see cat coats tabby for a full description plus the best photographs).
