How big should my cat’s litter box be?
You will find the answer to the question in the title if you click on the link above but the gist of it is this: a cat litter tray or box, call it what you like, should be approximately one and a half times the length of the cat who uses it.
I have a feeling that there are very few cat litter trays which can accommodate the larger sized domestic cat. There are some very big domestic cats and cat litter trays came in fixed sizes to accommodate a reasonable domestic cats size. Therefore, I don't think that commercially available cat litter trays would accommodate a very large domestic cat. The larger cat might need a customised litter tray.
We need to do all we can to ensure that our cat uses the cat litter tray without fail. Sometimes, for various reasons a domestic cat will not wish to use the litter box.
Making the box a decent size and at least one and a half times the length of the cat who is using it at least makes it comfortable from the point of view of size.
The person who came to this conclusion is Dr. Tony Buffington DVM, MS, PhD, Diplomate ACVN at Ohio State University. I think he also concluded that often the trays are too small. You can do what you will with that information but I'd at least measure the length of my cat and when out at the shops looking for a cat litter tray I would make sure that it was at least while a half times the length of my cat.
As for customised cat litter trays, I am not sure. Perhaps there are some oversized ones available.
