Why are cats' tongues rough?

Because the surface of a cat's tongue is covered with hair-like structures called  "papillae" that are made of the same material as our fingernails, "keratin". The papillae are quite long although hard to see with the naked eye.

The cat's tongue is a vital bit of cat anatomy. It is multipurpose. You can read all about its uses and usefulness on this page. There are some great photographs too.

When a cat likes you, enjoy it and let your cat lick you. It is a sign of friendship and we should accept friendship as it strengthens the bond between cat and person.
