VETS in my country are regarded as money hungry and are NOT TRUSTED by anyone americans should not put there trust into any vet they are only interested in the $$$$$$$$$ so many vets are MONSTERS example:lve watched heaps of shows where just because an animal is found and its owner cant be found and this animal is slightly injured l HATE it when the R.S.P.C.A calls it HUMANE to put the animal down instead of save it but its ok to operate on a tiger that has a sore tooth in the zoo how much does that cost people pick and choose who should live well ur not GOD and the more u show these shows to us aussies the more we will never trust u vets l will be desexing my baby girls at 6 months soon cause l dont want them to accidently end up falling pregnant as its so hard to find homes for kittens in my country cause heaps of scumbag aussies hate cats they love dogs more so l will have to do this to save unwanted kittens and when l do take them to a vet nothing better go wrong or the vet will see the other side of me and its not a pretty site to see so l hope for my kittens and the vets sake it goes well

I fully agree with your thoughts. I just am not sure how this scandal can be rectified. It must be stopped. I am surprised that the American people don't revolt. A veterinarian should be singled out and people should start peaceful protests outside his business. Then someone should find a vet who declaws without good reason (shouldn't be hard to find) and then find a way to sue them under the code of practice and get him or her struck off. And so on.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have been shocked and saddened to learn that many vets in North America are happy to mutilate cats (and dogs) in their pursuit of the all mighty dollar.

I'm beginning to think that most of those vets view cats as little more than vermin, since they have no compassion for them. You're right, it is part of their job to educate owners about natural behaviors and how to handle them.

Owning a cat is not compulsory, and those who cannot accept a cat has claws should not have one.

Thank you for this brilliant piece. You have written an excellent document here. I also thought the survey was right on the money.

My vet will not declaw. She abhors the practice. She is very upset about other surgeries which are apparently coming into fashion, such as removing the olfactory organs in male cats to prevent spraying behavior. Such attrocities certainly do not meet the criteria of the Ethical oath that veterinarians take before entering practice.

Hi, thanks for the comments. Vets in America must change their ways and start to behave ethically. It is shocking that they don't. It is a massive fraud, a conspiracy between a morally inadequate cat "owner" and a corrupted veterinarian and the victim is the humble, the silent and ever tolerant cat companion.

Yes this is a brilliant article,I was a vet nurse(UK)in my working days and our vets would never ever declaw a cat.I was horrified to find out 8 months ago that is is still happening in the USA.What is supposed to be a last resort procedure for serious scratching problems is being done daily on kittens !! Some vets even offer a
package deal of neutering/declawing ! It can't be right that people trained and who take an oath to help animals, agree to mutilate them by declawing.

That is a brilliant article, thank you for telling the truth. Vets that declaw cats do it for one thing alone...money! I can't believe that anyone would choose to physically mutilate a cat for the sake of furniture, or skin for that matter, and certainly not to appease a landlord. We have a petition here http://www.petitionthem.com/default.asp?sect=detail&pet=4312 calling for a ban on declawing in the USA if you'd like to sign and circulate it
